Vita

John Waldeisen, a rising senior and native of the State College area, is majoring in Engineering Science and Mechanics and plans to complete minors in Bioengineering and Economics. A member of Huang Lab since March 2006, John is researching his honors thesis in 1) the structural transformations of chemical and biological polymeric sensors and 2) the downstream separation of microfluidic droplets. His past research experiences include stints at Harvard University and the PSU Applied Research Laboratory. He plans to attend graduate school in neurology/neuroscience and hopes to investigate how neuron development and functionality affect cognitive ability, human experience, spiritualism, religion, and physical wellbeing. John looks forward to his time in PSU BioNEMS lab, graduate school, and the many directions life will lead.

Past Research Accomplishments Include: 1) Devised Techniques to Characterize Molecular Transport within a Microfluidic Device 2) Investigated the Feasibility and Industrial Employment of Laser Machining, Laser-Assisted Machining, and Hybrid Laser Machining of Titanium Alloy (Ti-6Al-4V)

Current Research
  1. Computer Aided Simulation of the Structural Transformations of Nanoporous Polymer Photonic Band Gap Structure-based Chemical/Biological Sensors
  2. Downstream Separation of Microfluidic Emulsions/Droplets via Light Actuation of a TiO2 Coated Substrate.
