Bala obtained his B.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University college of Engineering, Osmania University, India and obtained his M.S. degree in Manufacturing systems and Technology program at Singapore-MIT Alliance, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He obtained his Ph.D. at the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Pennsylvania State University.

He was affiliated to the Bio-NEMS group at the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department, supervised by Prof Tony Jun Huang and Jensen Research Group at Department of Chemistry supervised by Prof Lasse Jensen.
