Research

My main research interests are the manufacturing, performance, evaluation, and mechanics of fiber reinforced composite materials. Application areas include fixed and rotary wing aircraft, civil structures, and industrial machinery. I am currently looking for a graduate research assistant in the area of bio-inspired flexible composites for innovative structures incorporating sensing, actuation, energy harvesting, and self-healing. This is a 4-year project suitable for a new PhD student. The ideal candidate for this position would have a good background in polymers and mechanics and would be equally comfortable with experimental work (material synthesis and characterization) and modeling work (material processing, constitutive behavior, and structural behavior).

My current projects projects include:

  • Design, fabrication, and test of composite flywheel energy storage systems
  • Characterization and modeling of externally bonded composite (FRP) reinforcements for concrete under elevated temperature and sustained loads
  • Flexible matrix composites for highly deformable, active, and morphing structures
  • Electrically oriented nanofillers for multifunctional structural composites
  • Composite energy absorbing systems for crashworthy air vehicles
  • Impact damage tolerant composite structures
