These properties arise from quantum confinement of electron or light waves at nanoscale. Moreover, a wealth of novel properties emerges when molecules interface with nanostructures because of the strong interactions and the combined advantages of these different materials. I am dedicated to an interdisciplinary research that explores fundamentals in molecules and photonic nanostructures at the interface of physics, chemistry, biology, materials, and engineering, and that develops novel devices to address current challenges in information processing, security, environment, energy, and medicine. In general, my research efforts involve trying to 1) probe and control atomic-scale structures, physical properties, interactions, and dynamics of molecules and their functional assemblies on surfaces; 2) develop advanced technologies for generating, engineering, modulating, amplifying, and detecting surface plasmons on metal nanostructures; and 3) elucidate light-molecule interactions at nanoscale in pursuit of synergistic combination of molecular nanotechnology and nanophotonics for novel multifunctional nanomaterials, nanodevices, and nanosystems.
