The Society of Engineering Science is pleased to announce that a Student Abstract/Presentation Competition will be held at the 43rd Annual Meeting at Penn State. The judging criteria are given below. The presentations are each 25 minutes long, including the question and answer period. The three best presentaions will be awarded cash prizes of an amount to be determined. The prizes and certificates will be awarded at the banquet on Tuesday evening of the meeting.

To participate in this competition, a student author must:

  1. Be enrolled as a student with at least half-time status at the time the abstract is submitted. Note that the student does not need to be a member of SES.
  2. Be listed as the first author on the submitted abstract.
  3. Present the talk at the meeting. It is required that participants pay for registration.

To submit abstracts to this competition, student authors must:

  1. Submit their abstract via the link to Abstract Submission.
  2. Follow the directions on the abstract submission page for uploading the abstract. As with any abstract, select the symposium most appropriate for the topic of your abstract/presentation.

Eligibility for the Student Abstract/Presentation Competition is based on the individual being a student at the time the abstract is submitted. A number of students will receive financial support to attend the meeting. Some will have their registration covered and others will receive registration plus some travel support. Awards for travel support are not expected to cover all travel costs. Travel support will be awarded to a selected number of students based on assessment of their abstracts. All foreign students presenting talks in the competition must show their ORIGINAL visa at the registration desk of the meeting in order for Penn State to process any transfer of funds.

Presentations will be judged based on the following criteria: intellectual merit, broader impacts, creativity, clarity of presentation, organization/completeness of presentation, and interaction with audience (e.g., answering questions).

Foreign students having visas of the following types will receive an honorarium in an amount to be determined:

Foreign students having visas of the following types will need to fill out a Penn State travel reimbursement form (available at the registration desk) to receive a refund of legitimate expense up to the amount of the honorarium:

Domestic students (US citizens) coming from outside of the State College area will receive an honorarium in an amount to be determined.
