ESM Graduate Programs Application
How to Apply
Deadlines:
December 15 for upcoming Fall semester.
August 1 for upcoming Spring semester.
IUG Applications: Beginning of first week of 7th semester of Undergraduate studies.
Step 1
Complete The Graduate School online application. See the Graduate School's How to Apply page for application fee information. This application is only completed electronically at the Graduate School Admissions and Program Information Portal (via secure web pages)
Step 2
For a complete application package that is ready to be reviewed, the following documents must be completed in addition to the official school application:
- 2 (Two) Official Transcripts from all of your previous course work. International Students must submit 2(two) official records ((Chinese applicants: 2 (two) transcripts, 2 (two) translated transcripts, 2 (two) graduation certificates in English and Chinese, 2 (two) degree certificates in English and Chinese.))
Notarized copies are not acceptable.

These records must be mailed. - Statement of Objectives: Tell us why you want to pursue advanced degrees in Engineering Science and Mechanics and how it will help you to further your career objectives.
- 3 (Three) letters of recommendation. These must be on official Business or persional stationery and must contain the signature of the author. These must be mailed. We do not accept uploaded documents.
**We do not use recommendation forms.** - Resume
- GRE Revised — General Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (verbal, quantitiative, and analytical)

TOEFL score (for all international applicants whose native language isNOT English, regardless of previous academic training).

Financial Sponsors Who are Not U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents
If you are not using your own funds to support your educational expenses, we require notification from your financial sponsor(s) of the amount of money available to you each year and the length of time of the support.
Financial Sponsors Who are U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents
The I-134 Affidavit of Support is used by financial sponsors living in the United States who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.

Financial Guarantee
International Students Only
If you are accepted into the graduate program, you will be required to complete an Application for Visa Document http://www.global.psu.edu/DISA/
You must provide a financial guarantee for the first year and provide information on how your educational expenses will be supported in all succeeding years at Penn State. You cannot receive the I-20 or DS-2019 required for the issuance of a visa without this information. Missing information will delay the process. You may use proof of personal funds, family funds (this proof must be accompanied by an affidavit of support, which states the amount of financial support provided and the period of time the support will be provided), sponsorship from an agency (this proof must include official notification of your award), or financial support from Penn State (note: this is limited) or a combination of these as proof of financial support.
This information will be available at the above website. Once at the University Office of Global Programs website please select “How to apply to Penn State” from the left side of the web page. This gives you instructions to follow for processing of your Visa requirements.
