Dr. Steven A. Ringel is the Neal A. Smith Endowed Chair Professor in Electrical Engineering and Director of the Ohio State Institute for Materials Research at The Ohio State University. Professor Ringel leads an internationally-renowned research program that spans from electronic materials synthesis and properties to device applications for electronic, energy, and photonic technologies.

He is particularly interested in interdisciplinary innovations based on the materials science of heterogeneous integration and defect engineering. Professor Ringel’s notable research accomplishments include the first room temperature-operating Si-based red laser diodes, ultra-high speed metamorphic InAs transistors, the development of unique characterization methods for quantitative study of defects in wide bandgap materials, and the first high performance monolithically integrated III-V solar cells on Si, which are currently being tested on the International Space Station. Professor Ringel has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers and edited three books, and he is especially proud of his seven best paper awards.

Professor Ringel is a recipient of the NSF National Young Investigator Award (1994), the OSU Harrison Award for Excellence in Engineering Education and Research (1999), and is a Fellow of AAAS. Currently, Professor Ringel sits on Ohio State’s Research Foundation Board of Directors, the Solid State Electronics (Elsevier) Editorial Board, International Advisory Boards for several Asian and European scientific committees, and Executive Committees within IEEE, TMS, AIAA, and AVS. His entrepreneurial activities include co-founding three companies that contribute leading innovations to the semiconductor and photovoltaics market sectors.

Professor Ringel is a 1991 Ph.D. graduate of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, prior to which he received an M.S. degree in Engineering Science (1986) and a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering (1984), both at The Pennsylvania State University.
