Congratulations to ESM Editorial Assistant Diane Bierly for taking first place, with her award winning raisin pie, in the baked products competition at the 2008 Centre County Grange Fair. In addition to culinary expertise, Diane is also an avid outdoors person, gardner and bird-watcher.

Dr. Bruce Gluckman, associate professor of engineering science and mechanics and neurosurgery, along with Nick Chernyy, graduate student in the department of engineering science and mechanics, will be attending the International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology conference in Vancouver, Canada from August 19 - 23, 2008. Dr. S. Ashok, professor in engineering science and mechanics, presented a plenary lecture and tutorial on Photovoltaics at the Yaounde International Conference on Novel Materials and Technologies, July 5 - 12, 2008. Additionally, Dr. Ashok visited the University of Yaounde to present a seminar.
