Muhammad Faryad, post-doctoral scholar in Engineering Science and Mechanics has been selected to attend the “How to Engineer Engineering Education” workshop in July 2012 at Bucknell University. For the eleventh consecutive year, faculty from Bucknell University are offering this hands on workshop for engineering and science faculty and graduate students to enhance their teaching by writing clear instructional objectives at appropriate cognitive levels; using active, cooperative and problem-based learning; teaching teamwork and problem solving skills; and assessing learning outcomes.

Yao Zhang, graduate student in engineering science and mechanics under the advising of Dr. Sulin Zhang, will travel in August to Beijing, China to attend the 23rd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). IUTAM is an international non-governmental scientific organization belonging to the International Council of Scientific Unions. To learn more about the conference, please visit their web site.

Engineering Science and Mechanics graduate student Abdalla Nassar’s interdisciplinary applied physics research on laser-sustained plasma was featured on the cover of the Journal of Physics. This research was conducted with Dr. Ravindra Akarapu, Dr. Stephen Copley, and Professor Judith A. Todd.

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards include generous stipends ranging from $42,000 - $75,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience. Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000. These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.
