For the second year in a row, Akhlesh Lakhtakia has been named a winner in the second annual Nanotech BriefsŪ' Nano 50 Awards in the Innovator category.

Bruce J. Gluckman joins Penn State as Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery in the College of Medicine (Milton S. Hershey Medical Center).

Steven J. Schiff joins Penn State as Professor of Neurosurgery in the College of Medicine (Milton Hershey Medical Center) and Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics and Brush Chair Professor of Engineering.

Sam Zamrik, Professor Emeritus of Engineering Mechanics, has been elected President-elect of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Lisa Daub, Administrative Assistant for Penn State's Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization, has completed the Penn State Mastering Supervision Program.

Dr. Samia Suliman, Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, is serving on the NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program review panel.

Dr. Akhlesh Lakhtakia and Dr. Fei Wang are the editors of "Nanotechnology--Theory and Modeling", a collection of 50 papers that focus on the theory and modeling of nanoscale materials and structures. Topics inlcude nanotubes, quantum dots, photonic crystals, sculptured thin films, spintronics, nanomagnetics, and nanobiotechnology. The book is published by SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering).

Mr. Vivek Verma (ESM doctoral student) will attend the Tenth Annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Scholars Program at Howard University, Washington, DC, June 27th - June 30th, 2006.

Five Engineering Science and Mechanics staff members are the recipients of the 2006 Legacy Awards. Diane Bierly received the Legacy Award for Management; Craig Haynal received the Legacy Award for Creativity and Innovation; Kathleen Zimmerman received the Legacy Award for Diversity and Citizenship; and Kristina Cowan and Tracy Potter received the Legacy Award for Planning and Organizational Effectiveness.
