CMacTeX

by Tom Kiffe tkiffe@math.tamu.edu

Shareware - $35 for a single user, $300 for a site license
Current Version: 4.0
PowerPC
Updated: 6/1/2001

Tom Kiffe has released CMacTeX 4.0 for Mac OS 8/9.

From his web site:

CMacTeX is an integrated suite of programs for implementing TeX on the Macintosh. It includes both Carbon and Classic versions of the programs. The Carbon programs require at least Mac OS 8.6 and CarbonLib 1.0.4 and run natively on Mac OS X. The Classic programs require at least Mac OS 8.1. CMacTeX can be configured to work in an integrated fashion with either of the popular Macintosh editors BBEdit or Alpha. It is compatible with the version of TeX found on most Unix systems and can even interpret any Unix directory paths that may be embedded in documents originally written on a Unix system.
  • In addition to TeX 3.14159, CMacTeX contains two extensions of TeX, namely pdfTeX, and e-TeX. PdfTeX converts TeX source files directly to pdf format, thereby avoiding the creation of intermediate dvi and postscript files. Bibliographies can be constructed with bibtex and indices can be created with makeindex.
  • Metafont 2.7182 can be called automatically by other programs in CMacTeX to generate pk font files.
  • Dvips 5.86d converts the dvi files produced by TeX into Postscript documents. Dvips supports the partial downloading of postscript fonts.
  • Dvi files can be previewed with macdvi. It can display certain types of included eps graphics and has full support for color. If you have ATM 4.0 or later, you can use the Postscript versions of the CM fonts for previewing. Macdvi can be used to print dvi files if you do not have a Postscript printer and your dvi file does not contain any Postscript graphics or fonts.
  • Postscript is fully supported in CMacTeX. MacGhostView is a Postscript previewer built upon ghostscript 6.01. Unlike ghostscript, macghostview allows the user to view the pages of a Postscript document in any order. Macps2pdf is a Postscript converter and Metapost can be used for the construction of Postscript figures. Several utilities are provided for manipulating postscript files and fonts.
  • Of all the TeX installations for the Macintosh CMacTeX provides the most comprehensive support for the generation of pdf documents from tex files. The traditional method of generating pdf is to convert a dvi file into postscript and then use Adobe Distiller to convert postscript to pdf. CMacTeX includes pdftex, which converts a tex file directly to pdf, and dvipdfm, a direct dvi to pdf converter. With pdftex you can include png, jpg, tif, and pdf graphic files in your TeX document.
  • Utilities for manipulating dvi files and font files are also included.
  • A 40 page User's Guide in either PDF or Postscript format is included.
  • CMacTeX fully supports EC fonts, the Postscript versions of the CM and AMS fonts, and the conversion of Postscript documents into PDF documents. Both dvips and pdftex can use the Macintosh versions of Postscript fonts. Only dvitopdfm still requires Postscript fonts in pfb format.
  • CMacTeX contains all of the files (.tfm, .fd, .sty, .enc, .map, etc) needed to use the MathTime and Lucida Bright fonts. The actual screen and printer fonts must be purchased from Y&Y, which is out of business.
  • CMacTeX provides complete support for Apple Scripts, thereby allowing the user to automate most tasks.
  • In addition to providing the standard Macintosh graphical user interface, CMacTeX implements a basic command line interface to TeX. Some things, unpacking library source files or building formats, are more easily performed through a command line interface than through menu selections. This command line interface is also available through Apple Scripts.
You can download everything by going to the "Download 4.0" link of the CMacTeX Home Page.

OzTeX 5.0 Info

Andrew Trevorrow has released OzTeX 5.0b4 for Mac OS 8/9/X. If you've already installed OzTeX 4.1b3 or 5.0b* then all you need to do is replace your existing Oz* applications with the new versions. The supplied TeX/MF/MP/TtH/Extras folders haven't changed so trash them. Be sure and read the enclosed files for all the details.

See the OzTeX section of the Mac OS X Versions Page for details regarding changes.

You can download OzTeX 5.0b4 from here ( 1.1M) or from Andrew's web site.

PostScript Fonts for Use with OzTeX

A consortium consisting of Blue Sky Research, Y& (out of business), the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), IBM and others have generously made the Computer Modern and AMS Fonts available to the public. The source of the fonts is BSR and Y&Y and their contribution should be gratefully acknowledged since they both have done a tremendous amount of work creating these fonts in Type 1 format. AMS should also be thanked for pulling together the consortium. Here are the versions for OzTeX:

Changes in OzTeX 4.0

  • The folder structure has undergone a major overhaul. The result is an OzTeX folder that is simpler, more consistent and much less cluttered. The new structure should have very little impact on existing OzTeX users because there are also new configuration file features that make it easy to customize the OzTeX system without making a SINGLE change to any of the distributed folders.

  • The new Extras folder has all the peripheral stuff, mostly contributions from other people. It contains the latest versions of AlphaLite, BibTeX, Excalibur and MakeIndex, as well as all support files for the Y&Y fonts.

  • The Extras folder also contains Odd Jobs, my latest shareware offering. This utility can perform many useful file-processing tasks.

  • OzTeX's Default config file now uses big values for all TeX parameters. Some TeX parameters have had their upper limits increased. All formats have been rebuilt and OzTeX's preferred memory size is now 3500K.

  • Most previewing shortcuts can now be performed using the mouse.

  • LaTeX has been updated to the latest release (1999/06/01 patch level 1). The EC fonts are also included.

  • Added OzTtH, a Mac port of Ian Hutchinson's TeX to HTML translator.

  • OzTeX can remember recent TeX/DVI/PostScript files. New submenus let you select any of these files.

  • OzTeX's Tools menu has new items that provide quick access to OzTtH, BibTeX, MakeIndex, MacGS and Distiller. System 7 or later is required.

  • All Oz* apps create text files using a creator code specified by a new text_editor parameter.

  • All the major tools and applications (dvips, Metafont, MetaPost, etc) have been updated to the latest versions.

See the Read-Me for details.

Tools for Use With Textures

  • Textures Diagnostic 1.0.1 ( 83k)
Blue Sky is beta testing a new Textures Diagnostic (though it now appears to be out of beta). It gives us a better snapshot of your Textures configuration, as well as a better diagnostic of your system. There is even a small help area. This replaces the previous "BSR Diagnostic", "BSR Tech Support", and "BSR Font Diagnostic". (July 17, 1999)

  • Textures Font Fix. Fixes most of the issues with the Textures/Illustrator font problem. It is from Andy White (he mentioned in his email that the problem also affects some OzTeX users). Consists of a pair of applications on which you can drop Illustrator 88 files saved out of Textures and Illustrator 6 and 7 .eps files saved out of Illustrator. ( 156k)

  • The complete versions BSR's hidden fonts ( 2.8M) by Tom Scavo. This archive corrects four problems with the CM PS font archive on CTAN:
    • no cmb10 printer font
    • no lcm* screen fonts (there should be three of them)
    • a LCIRCLEW10-0 printer font (why?) and no corresponding screen font
    • no hidden screen fonts

  • AMS-LaTeX2e Macro Menu for Textures ( 17k) A very nice AMS-LaTeX2e macro menu for use with Textures formats. Posted version is dated August 25th, 1998. Thanks go to Uwe Schmock.

  • Alpha Tools for a Textures/Alpha interface. ( 273k) Excellent set of tools by Tom Scavo trscavo@syr.edu that make it a joy to work use Alpha with Textures (or Textures with Alpha). I just started using these and I highly recommend them.

  • BBEdit Plug-Ins for Textures
Written by Brad Hanson (bradh@pobox.com). There are three releases of the plug-ins that work with various versions of Textures and BBEdit. Release 3.0.1 works with Textures 2.1 and BBEdit 5.1.1 or later. Release 2.0.1 works with Textures 2.1 and BBEdit 3.5.2 or later. Release 1.2 works with Textures 1.8 or 2.0 and BBEdit 3.5.2 or later. Some of the plug-ins in Release 1.2 also work with BBEdit Lite 3.0.1 or later. The release 3.0.1 plug-in is a PowerPC plug-in that can only be used on PowerPC Macintoshes. Releases 2.0.1 and 1.2 of the plug-ins are 68K plug-ins that can run on a PowerPC or 68K Macintosh.

The external editor interface was significantly enhanced in Textures 2.1, so the plug-ins for Textures 2.1 offer quite a bit more functionality than the plug-ins for Textures 1.8 or 2.0. Release 3.0.1 uses some new features of the BBEdit plug-in interface introduced in BBEdit 5.1.1 which make the interaction between BBEdit and Textures much smoother than was possible in previous versions of BBEdit. It is highly recommended that BBEdit 5.1.1 or later and Release 3.0.1 be used with Textures 2.1.

    1. Download release 3.0.1 ( 19k) of the plug-ins for Textures 2.1 and BBEdit 5.1.1.
    2. Download release 2.0.1 ( 20k) of the plug-ins for Textures 2.1.
    3. Download release 1.2 ( 27k) of the plug-ins for Textures 1.8 and 2.0.
    Freeware.
A web page describing these plug-ins and other stuff by Brad can be found at http://www.b-a-h.com/bbedit/.

  • Blue Sky has created two new versions of the psfonts/adobe metrics for Textures: the basic psfonts/adobe metrics and the full psfonts/adobe metrics. The following info is from their web site.
    • The basic psfonts/adobe metrics are about 629k and contain the metrics for the standard Mac fonts (Times, Palatino, Helvetica, etc.).
    • The full psfonts/adobe metrics are about 1.5M and contain the same metrics as the basic psfonts/adobe metrics as well as the metrics for Optima, Utopia, Bembo, and a number of other fonts. This set expands to about 3 MB, so it slows down the time it takes to start up Textures considerably.
