Mercutio Bug also Bites Textures?
You may have seen some items flying around lately regarding a bug in the Mercutio MDEF, which is used by a large number of popular applications. Ric Ford has been following it very closely on the Mercutio MDEF Bug and Patch pages of his Macintouch site. This morning I found the following item on Eric D. Belsley's Mac Resource Page:
Uri Keich found that Textures 1.8 unlocks a GDevice handle when invoking the Popup Macros Menu; since many use the program with two monitors (one for the text source file, one to view the typeset), it is likely that many TeXperts were being bitten by the bug.
Therefore, I have made available the patch (which I found on the Mercutio MDEF site) which I am using on my 8600.
MacGS is Updated Again (though still at 5.10)

Help Needed for an Illustrator Fix
I got email today from Andy White of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) stating that he has a fix for the Illustrator/Textures font problem. To make it publicly available, he needs some help. I asked him for more info and here is what he sent:

I have a fix for the problems caused by Illustrator 7.0.1's 'font fudgeing'. The fix is quite simple and I have used it in past versions of Ill./Textures/OzTeX however I am not a programmer - so am calling for someone in the Mac-TeX community to assist.

I have versions in perl/fortran, but both unfortunately kill the PICT resource of the eps file. The actual fix part is a two-liner, so all that is needed is a drag and drop shell that leaves the rsrc fork intact. Or maybe someone knows how to drive the Illustrator Pluggin SDK ?

As I derive a portion of my income from being able to fix these 'font' problems (what a life huh ?) I would require that source and binary are released freely to all - and I get my 15 ticks of blah in the getinfo.

(Andy White, Dept. Mathematics, RMIT)
So, if you think you can help please contact Andy and maybe we can all put this Illustrator thing behind is once and for all.

MacGS updated to 5.10
I have updated MacGS to version 5.10. Here are the changes:
  • MacGS-510 is a port of Aladdin Ghostscript 5.10 to the Macintosh.
  • Elusive "main" appearing in AppleMenu is now gone.
  • MacGS-510 is slightly faster in the foreground, and better behaved in the background. Should now print properly using European paper settings: a3, a4, a5
Here are the bugs:
  • ps2epsi still not working, but very close.
  • printing dialog submenu option for resotions not working.

Minor Update to Textures LaTeX R7P0
I got email from Floyd Mann of Blue Sky telling me that there was a slight problem with the LaTeX R7P0 package they put on their ftp server. I think he said it best:
We realized that we made the same mistake on R7P0 as we did with R6P0: it was compiled so that the mathtime package expects you to have the Mathtime Plus font set. This can be remedied by replacing the 3 fd files my1mtt.fd, my2mtt.fd, and my3mtt.fd with the versions that are available on our FTP server in:
ftp.bluesky.com/ftp-area/pub/latex/latex2e/LaTeXR7P0/mathtime1.1.sit.

These files are identical to the ones used to fix Mathtime w/ R6P0, so you can also just copy them from your R6 folder into the R7 folder.

The R7P0 distribution on our FTP site now has the proper fd files as well.

I have also replaced LaTeX R7P0 on in the Textures section. If you downloaded the one I previously posted and you use the MathTimes fonts, you may want this one.

Nice Reference on LaTeX Floats
I realize that this is not Mac specific, but I found a nice page with some excellent tips and tricks on LaTeX floats. I think this page is particularly helpful for those people who are frequently surprised and frustrated by LaTeX's placement of floats. I have added it as an entry in my "Useful TeX/LaTeX Web Sites" section.

Great Textures News!!!
I spent some time on the phone with Floyd from Blue Sky Research yesterday afternoon and it appears that we have isolated almost all the problems with the new LaTeX release. Only a couple of small problems appear to reamin
  1. "ff" ligatures with Lucida do not appear on the preview (but they print fine and they are working on the problem);
  2. there seems to be some problem with ATM Deluxe and the Lucida fonts.
On my machine, if I load the Lucida fonts using ATM Deluxe 4.0 (instead of putting them in the Fonts folder within the System Folder, then typeset mathematics appears with a ton of incorrect characters. On the other hand, if the Lucida fonts are in the Fonts folder, everything works perfectly. Floyd told me that Arthur Ogawa loads his Lucida fonts using ATM Deluxe and does not have this problem. There must be something in my configuration that is causing the problem. I will work on this and see if I can isolate it (though it may not be any time soon). If someone else experiences this and can find the cause, please let me know. By the way, none of these problems occur with the Computer Modern fonts.

The bottom line is that I highly recommend the new LaTeX R7P0 release that is now available from Blue Sky (and can also be found here!). The font metric situation with Textures had been getting more confusing all the time and they have straightened everything out by included all the metrics you will ever need (except the MathTime metrics which they also recently updated). In addition, people are now writing style files that depend on recent LaTeX builds, so you may have no choice but to use the latest releases.

Hidden CM and AMS PostScript Fonts for OzTeX

I have added "hidden" versions of the Computer Modern, LaTeX, and AMS screen fonts for use with OzTeX (it even includes the appropriate config file). They are courtesy of William Lampe. Thanks Bill!
Update on LaTeX R7P0
Well, it didn't work for me. I still get a fair number of funny math characters. I sent the info to Floyd at Blue Sky and they are working on it.

Possible Good News on the Lucida/Textures/Latest LaTeX Front

I got word from Blue Sky yesterday (and they now have an announcement on their web site) that they think they have fixed the problems that exist between the latest build of LaTeX and the Lucida font family. Here is the message from their web site:
"We now have Art Ogawa's build of LaTeX R7P0 on our FTP server. It is fat binary, so it can be used with both PPC and 68K Textures. The README file inside of the archive describes the installation process. If you would like to use the Lucida Bright, Lucida New Math, and Lucida Expert fonts with this version of LaTeX, remove your existing Lucida metrics from your TeX Fonts folder and try using the new version of the psfont/bh metrics instead (bh is short for Bigelow & Holmes, the designers of the Lucida Bright fonts). The fonts are then invoked using the lucidabr package. We haven't had a chance to test this build of LaTeX much, so please let us know if you experience any complications using it."
I have not yet tried it, but will make it available here once I try it and am convinced that it works (which I will do later today). Until then, if anyone tries it, please send me your results (good or bad).
Not so Good News on the Textures/Illustrator Front
I got email from Barry Smith of Blue Sky Research with some information on the problem with Illustrator 7 and Textures fonts (actually all the Type 1 fonts for use with Textures). It appears that, amazingly, Illustrator 7 is not handling the Illustrator 88 format correctly (Textures exports in either Illustrator 88 or DVI format). There are a number of details, but the bottom line is that it appears that Adobe needs to fix things at their end. Consequently, keep the old versions of Illustrator on your machine if you want it to work with typeset pages exported from Textures. I currently have Illustrator 6.0.2 and Illustrator 7.0.1 on my machine and may even reinstall Illustrator 5.X in the search for better compatibility!

New Version of MacGS (GhostScript)
I have updated MacGS to version 5.03. Here are the changes:
  • The mac device in MacGS-503 now supports text and graphics anti-aliasing via the ghostscript command line options -dTextAlphaBits=number -dGraphicsAlphaBits=number, where number can take on the values 1, 2, or 4. To make life easier, the text and graphics antialiasing options are directly supported via the Settings dialog in the Edit menu. Text and graphics anti-aliasing provides much more pleasing fonts and lines when rendering at low dpi.
  • Printing is much improved. The user can print an entire document or a subset of a document using the standard Macintosh printing dialog.
No More MATLAB for the Mac?!?!?!
I am sure that a number of Mac TeX users are also Mac MATLAB users. The official word from The MathWorks is that they plan to stop development of their Macintosh version of MATLAB after version 5.2 (they are currently at 5.1). Please contact The MathWorks if you do not want to see this happen. It sounds like management is getting a lot of calls on this issue and may be starting to sweat. Please add your voice if this is important to you. Personally, I can't imagine being with MATLAB, but I may have to. Go to Mac Requests MATLAB Page for more information.
No News on Illustrator Problems
I haven't heard anything new and/or hopeful on the Illustrator problem mentioned October 14, though I have heard from a number of people stating that they have the same problem. I will post more info if and when I get it.

Problem with Adobe Illustrator 7.0.X and Textures
I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon trying to get Adobe Illustrator 7 to work with Textures the way version 6 did. I didn't! Here is the story and a warning.

With every version of Illustrator since 3.X, I have created plots using Mathematica or MATLAB and then saved them as Illustrator or EPS files. I would then create figure labels and annotations using Textures and then export the contents of the typeset window to an Illustrator 88 file. I could then open the Illustrator 88 file created in Textures and the plot created in Mathematica or MATLAB into Illustrator and combine the two. This worked beautifully until yesterday. I recently upgraded to Illustrator 7 from 6 and was preparing a paper to send out to a journal. I had a plot created in Mathematica and had created some figure labels in Textures to add to the plot. I opened the Illustrator 88 file from Textures in Illustrator 7 and it showed up in the wrong font and with the wrong characters. I then tried printing the file from Textures as a PostScript file and opening it in Illustrator. It looked alright in Illustrator, but printed incorrectly (double characters, incorrect characters, a mess!). With a quick call to Floyd at Blue Sky, I found out that they are aware of this problem and are working with the folks at Adobe to come to some sort of resolution. The bottom line is that if you take advantage of Textures' ability to save as Illustrator 88 files and Illustrator's ability to create beautiful graphics, I would stick with Illustrator 6 for now.

On a related note, I also recently started using the full Lucida package of fonts with Textures (I really like Lucida!) and the same problem occurs to some degree or another in both Illustrator 6 and Illustrator 7. I really hope they fix this one, because Lucida grows on me more every day.

If you are experiencing any of these problems or haven't and would like to use the feature of Textures, please contact Blue Sky and let them know so that they don't think I am the lone voice needing to do this. In addition, please contact me if you have a work-around.

Fixed Problem OzTeX Section
Updated the OzTeX section to fix the asterisks indicating changed files from previous versions.
More Later This Week
I am really busy right now, but I wanted to get the above information out. I will be adding some OzTeX stuff, text editor patches, and Scientific Word info later this week when I have some time.

Link to Internet Config added to OzTeX
I have added a link in the OzTeX section from which you can download Internet Config.
More PostScript Fonts! (AMS!)
With the release of the AMS PostScript fonts to the public (Note: they are not in the public domain -- please read the included READ.ME files to understand the terms of their release to the public.), I have rearranged all the PostScript fonts on the server. There are now separate Computer Modern PostScript font archives for Textures and OzTeX and I have added separate PostScript AMSFonts archives for Textures and OzTeX.

OzTeX 3.1 is here!
I have updated OzTeX to version 3.1. Important changes from the Read Me:
  • The main change in OzTeX 3.1 is extra support for hypertext links. The view window allows links to other DVI files, and to URLs; the latter require Internet Config and suitable helper applications to be installed. The OzTeX/OzMF/OzMP windows also support links to URLs.

NOTE: Internet Config 1.4 has just been released. This version fixes a bad memory leak, so definitely worth upgrading. Download it from ftp://ftp.share.com/internet-configuration.

  • The new User Guide has a bibliography and an index. It also includes lots of hypertext links to take advantage of the new support.

  • The new User Guide includes EPSF files rather than MacPaint files. To print ozuser.dvi on a StyleWriter (or any 360 dpi printer) make sure OzTeX's preferred memory size is at least 1200K above the suggested size.

  • You can type "t" while TeX is running and OzTeX will repeat the TeX run. Type "tt" to get 2 extra runs. Handy for LaTeX users.

  • A new version of dvips (5.74) fixes some nasty bugs.

  • The TeX-inputs folder contains new Graphics and HyperRef subfolders.

  • New versions of BibTeX, Excalibur and AlphaLite.

New Link to My New Useful and Fun Software Page
I have added a link to my new page on Useful and Fun Mac Software. It is a page filled with applications, control panels, and extensions that are not only useful and/or fun (i.e., I use them a lot), but they have also proven to be stable with Mac OS 8.0 (I have been using Macs daily since my first Mac Plus in 1986, so I have some experience with such things). I just wanted to make them available in one location.

Update to the Textures Update Situation
I just got email Floyd Mann, the very helpful tech support guy at Blue Sky Research. He tells me that the reason I can't update my Textures 1.8.2 to 1.8.3 is that I am still running a beta. (Oops!) Anyway, the update I have in the Textures section below will in fact update all PPC and 68K versions of Textures 1.8.X to 1.8.3 as long, of course, as you aren't running a beta. Pretty cool!
Textures 1.8.3 Updater
Blue Sky posted an updater to Textures yesterday that takes it to 1.8.3. They read-me doesn't say anything about it being a 68K updater, but it did not work on my Textures 1.8.2 PPC version. I have posted it here anyway. Please let me know if you have better luck. If anyone talks to Blue Sky about this (I don't have time to call them right now), please let me know what they say.
Request for Information
I would also like some info from Textures users out there regarding what metrics files they have installed and what their modification dates are. I have a huge proliferation of metrics files and the usually amazing people at Blue Sky can't tell me what I should have. Also please include as much info as you can, such as:
  • Version of LaTeX (this makes a big difference).
  • Info on Lucida, Times, and other metrics (I also use these fonts).
  • Anything else?
I thought I was a pretty savvy Textures user, but this one has me totally baffled. Basically, I just try different metrics until things seem to work properly. Heaven forbid I ever update my LaTeX, because that usually breaks the font stuff. Blue Sky has done a nice job of putting TeX on the Mac, but I think they are having a hard time keeping up with the font changes implemented by the LaTeX team.

Action Item for Mac TeX Users
I just got email from ASARI Hirotsugu regarding a slick browser plug-in from IBM called techexplorer. From IBM's web site:
IBM's techexplorer Hypermedia Browser formats and displays expressions and documents containing mathematical and scientific markup. It is a Web browser plug-in for readers and publishers of scientific documents coded with the popular TeX and LaTeX markup languages. With Version 1.2, you get:

techexplorer provides many options for formatting and customizing the document display. And because techexplorer documents are relatively small (often one quarter the size of some portable document formats), they format and display rapidly.

It is requires at least Netscape Navigator 2.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 but only runs on Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.51 or higher. You've got it, no Mac version. It would be wonderful to have something like this on the Mac, so please check out the their web site at: http://www.ics.raleigh.ibm.com/ics/techexp.htm and then send a polite email to techexpl@watson.ibm.com requesting that they make a version for the Mac. Maybe if they see how much support there is for a Mac version, they will consider porting it to our favorite platform.

CMacTeX Updated to 2.7
A big update to CMacTeX has been added! It is now at version 2.7 and the new features are (written by Tom himself):
  • Ghostview is now based on ghostscript 5.03 and can print selected pages of a postscript document on postscript and non-postscript printers. It has all of the functionality of viewps while allowing the user to view the pages, in arbitrary order, of documents conforming to Adobe's Document Structuring Conventions. Viewps is no longer distributed or supported.
  • Dvipreview has full support for viewing dvi files in color.
  • Dvips has been upgraded to version 5.74 and provides better support for partial font downloading.
  • LaTeX2e has been upgraded to the June 1997 release.
  • Bibtex now implements dynamic, rather than static, data structures. If bibtex runs out of memory, just increase the memory partition for bibtex in its "Get Info" window.
  • The installation of CMacTeX has been fully automated with an Apple Script.
  • Minor bugs have been fixed and several minor enhancements for almost all of the programs have been added.
  • Several cosmetic problems introduced by System 8 have been corrected.
  • The complete Unix manual for TeX/MF is available in PDF format. Although this document, written by K. Berry, is intended for Unix installations, there is plenty of information in it useful for any TeX installation.
Sounds excellent! Grab it in the CMacTeX section.
Wednesday, August 27, 1997
  • Updated the link to the CTAN website in the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network section.

  • Updated the German dictionary (Deutsches-Lexikon) for Excalibur. From the readme:
Applied 318 corrections and 30 deletions provided by D. Nickel,
    dn@ilp.physik.uni-essen.de.

  • Classes start today, so please continue to send any updates or tips, but it make take me a day or two to post them.

Friday, August 22, 1997
  • Blue Sky has created two new versions of the psfonts/adobe metrics for Textures: the basic psfonts/adobe metrics and the full psfonts/adobe metrics. The following info is from their web site.
    • The basic psfonts/adobe metrics contain the metrics for the standard Mac fonts (Times, Palatino, Helvetica, etc.).
    • The full psfonts/adobe metrics contains the same metrics as the basic psfonts/adobe metrics as well as the metrics for Optima, Utopia, Bembo, and a number of other fonts. This set expands to about 3 MB, so it slows down the time it takes to start up Textures considerably.
They are both available in the Tools for Use With Textures section.

Thursday, August 14, 1997
  • Updated the Textures Reader Installer. Supposedly fixes a printing problem with the previous version. Unfortunately, the version number has not changed, though it does have a more recent modification date.

  • I have again updated the German dictionary (Deutsches Lexikon) for Excalibur. From the read me:
    August 12, 1997

Made 17 corrections and 134 additions. These changes were provided by
    Helmut Walle, walle@tu-harburg.d400.de.

  • I have added a new version of the HTML dictionary for Excalibur. It adds tags for cascading style sheets and more. From the readme:
Enclosed is an HTML dictionary for Excalibur -- useful for
spell-checking web pages written in text or HTML editors that do not
have their own spelling checkers, such as BBEdit or PageSpinner.

It contains most of the tags from HTML 3.2, as well as many extensions
used by Netscape and Explorer. It does not contain tags that are
common English words, such as HEAD and BODY, so if you're writing web
content in French, you'll need to add these or load an English
    dictionary.

It won't check for unclosed tags or check your links, but it will
prevent Excalibur from choking on words like BGCOLOR, HREF, or IMG.

    Version 1.1 Note:

Attached is an update to the HTML Dictionary I sent you previously. It adds
tags for cascading style sheets, new named entities, new refinements to
table and form specifications, and a few others.

  • Due to an increasing number of requests and suggestions, I have added a Macintosh port of Ghostscript, MacGS 5.01, to the Mac Tools for TeX/LaTeX section.

  • I have done a little housekeeping to make it easier to keep this site up-to-date. One consequence of this is that the URLs http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/default.shtml, http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/Macintosh-LaTeX.html, and http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/Macintosh-LaTeX.shtml no longer work. You can now access the page useing http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/ or http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/default.html, which is what the vast majority people were doing anyway.

Sunday, August 10, 1997
  • I have updated the German dictionary (Deutsches Lexikon) for Excalibur. From the read me:
The June 22, 1995 version of this file corrects a few errors that were
    in the earlier version.

The February 15, 1997 version corrects a spelling error reported by a
    user.

July 26, 1997 - Made the following corrections:

    zus"atlich became zus"atzlich
    ausdehen became ausdehnen

  • Added the European Computer Modern fonts for use with Textures. You should be warned, they take a lot of disk space.

Friday, August 1, 1997
  • I have not updated things lately since I just returned from a wonderful vacation to California. I made a pilgrimage to the Mother Ship (i.e., Apple) and will be posting some photos of the campus when I get them developed. It was just a couple of days after the big Mac OS 8 party and it was a fun place to be. Since I am on the CQF team, I had the privilage of a personal tour of the campus. Very cool! I will be updating some items over the next couple of days.

  • Updated BibTeX to version 1.1.7. From the ReadMe:
Many small improvements/fixes to 'bibEngine.tcl'. Increased buffer
size of BibTeX at the big setting. Worked around an odd 'longjmp'
bug which could cause a crash when the buffer overflowed. Increased
a bunch of other 'big' settings. Fixed one bug which could crop up
after a fatal error on a .bib file. You can now (if desperate) adjust
the size of a number of internal bib constants. See the end of the
'reporting bugs' readme file for details. I now distribute the
original BibTeX documentation with my port. See the folder
'BibTeX docs' for that. Added bug report web page. Recompiled
with CW Pro 1, updating some powerplant classes. The log window's
text manipulation capability should be a little more complete now.
Added ability to abort processing, using 'cmd-.', and made sure
the log window scrolls as text is added, so you can see what is
going on. Fixed some cosmetic scrolling issues with the window
    too.

Monday, July 15, 1997
  • Updated Brad Hanson's Textures BBEdit Tools. There is a minor change to the Textures tools extension bringing it to version 1.1.1.

Monday, July 7, 1997
  • Excalibur has been updated to version 2.5. From the documentation:

    • New Features:

      • Excalibur supports the Word Services batch check, check word and guess word events. I have tested it with MT-NewsWatcher, Eudora Pro, Communicate 2.0 (due in late summer), Nisus Writer, and ClarisWorks. Excalibur is a plain text spell checker, so it works best in Nisus Writer and ClarisWorks if you check a segment of text that uses a single font and size.
      • The Excalibur manual and the Excalibur home page are now available through the help menu if you have Internet Config installed.
      • If you have Internet Config installed, Excalibur will use it to determine the file type when you select Save As.

    • Bugs Fixed:

      • Fixed a bug that caused buttons to appear as check boxes under System 8.
      • Fixed another bug related to converting very large dictionaries to text files on 68K machines.

  • I also added an "Italian Extras" dictionary for use with Excalibur.

It's a Blue Sky day!
  • Blue Sky Research has released a new version of their free Textures Reader. It is now at version 1.8.2. It includes an installer and is quite a nice package if you want to share TeX files with those poor Macintosh souls who do not use TeX/LaTeX.

  • Blue Sky Research has posted their MathX Viewer to their ftp site. MathX provides the mathematical typesetting capability of TeX and LaTeX within Quark XPress.

  • Lastly, Blue Sky Research will be shipping their Textures CD-ROM in the next week or two. It is loaded with stuff (CM and AMS PostScript fonts, Textures Reader Installer, and much of the LaTeX directory on CTAN - 164MB in all) and comes with Textures 1.8.2.
Wednesday, June 18, 1997
  • Version 6.52 of the text editors Alpha and AlphaLite have been released. Fixes an incompatibility with Kaleidoscope.
Monday, June 16, 1997
Wednesday, June 11, 1997
  • Added a Catalonian-Valencian dictionary for Excalibur.

  • Since I have been getting more and more requests about how to get started with LaTeX on the Macintosh, I thought I would add a small section entitled Getting Started and References to try and pre-answer some of these questions. In addition, I list some references that I frequently use when writing with LaTeX. If you have any useful tidbits that you feel I have omitted, please send me the details and I will consider adding them.

  • Ben Salzberg at Blue Sky Research has released R6P1 (revision 6, patch level 1) of the LaTeX2e distribution for Textures. This is nothing special to those of you that have already built this format, but it is a nice pre-built format with all the necessary LaTeX2e files for those that haven't.

  • Updated Excalibur to version 2.4. Also added a life sciences dictionary and updated the British dictionary.

    Version 2.4 new features:

    • Improved suggestions.
    • Use a AGA compliant popup menu in the edit commands dialog if possible.
    • Changed the Edit Commands dialog so that there is more room for the command name.
    • The "Use german.sty conventions" option is now called "Use German babel conventions".
    • Excalibur knows how to translate "s and "z when German babel conventions are turned on.
    • Added a check box to the open file dialog that enables you to view only *.tex and *.ltx files. If you save preferences, Excalibur will remember the contents of this check box.
    • Excalibur knows about the Catalan geminated-l digraph. In LaTeX, it recognizes \l.l and \L.L. Using the Macintosh character set, type l.l or L.L where the period is a centered dot.
    • Modal dialogs are now moveable.

    Bugs Fixed:

    • Fixed a rare crashing bug when converting a dictionary to text.
    • Fixed an minor update problem in the spell check window.
    • Better error detection when opening files.
    • Fixed a minor update problem in open and save file dialogs.
    • Better handling of eastern European and extended Roman scripts.
