Howdy,

Never realized that before (in spite of the `A' text selector - I
default to magnify) but the selection sure looks strange. I see that
I can copy the text and paste it into another document. I also wonder
why the Mail Services don't work with it. Hmmmm... I guess they also
don't work with selected text in the source file although the
Services are active when a selection is made in either one. Ok... I'm
TOTALLY wrong!

Good Luck,

Certainly, but I'll get back to that later. I am now finding about
about differences between TeX versions and OS versions and hardware.
Adding stuff like a normal tex run and such is in the works.

The reasons I chose this is that it is pretty stable in what is done.

1. Performance is in line with what you would expect for single CPU
integer performance.
2. Systems using 10.3.9 seem to be a bit faster than systems using
10.4.2 (but see 3 below)
3. Systems with earlier versions of TeX are up to twice as fast in the
same configuration/setup
4. Caveats:
- Only format generation has been tested, not actual stuff like pdfTeX
or tex+dvips
- The actual result depens on local circumstances which are all
different (e.g. language patterns loaded)

Plan: Write a truely independent test setup, that only depends on the
binaries installed on the system.

I'll be back.

2004 stable is the one you shoul duse. 2003 is only there for backward
compatibility with some projects of some users and it is not considered
by me to be 'stable' as it shares parts of the 2004 setup.

However it is stable enough to work for normal use like yours.

But th 2004 version is the way to go.

No, it's the file system itself. And you can have both case sensitive and
case insensitive filesystems at the same time AFAIK.

Bonjour Gerben,

I've just installed your new TeX distro which went smoothly but at my
first typesetting, I met this error : ! LaTeX Error: File
`lmodern.sty' not found.
I use the lmodern package.
I made a research in teTeX folder and didn't find any lmodern.sty as
previously.
Is it normal?

Which TeX setup are you using (2003, 2004, 2005)? I'm using using the =20=

2005 one, and lmodern.sty is indeed there in /usr/local/teTeX/share/=20
texmf.tetex/tex/latex/lm/.

In the beginning the Latin Modern fonts weren't part of teTeX, and =20
the TeX i-Package installed them inside texmf.local. Then they were =20
included in teTeX. Accordingly, since around October 2004, they have =20
been installed in texmf.tetex.

Could you have one of the older setups, or a mixture of old and =20
recent setups?

What does "kpsewhich lmodern.sty" return? I get:

$ kpsewhich lmodern.sty
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/latex/lm/lmodern.sty

(As an aside: please don't start a new thread by replying to a former =20=

one, it messes up threading in Mail -- and Thunderbird too I imagine.)

Latin Modern is part of my distribution. There are however differences.
The 2004 and 2005 distribution use teTeX 3 and thus have latin modern
in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex. The 2003 distribution uses teTeX
2 and therefore rely on adding gwTeX to get latin modern in
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/texmf.gwtex

So, if all is well, the only way you can get a distribution without
latin modern is when you select 2003 and you deselect gwTeX additions.

Subject: Any other surviving Textures users?
From: "AES"
Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 19:47:19 -0700

This message is primarily a "fishing expedition": I'm one of the
holdouts still happily using "Textures219d1", which I obtained from
Blue Sky not too many months ago, under Classic on OS 10.3.9, and
having just discovered this list, I'm simply attempting to see if
there are any others also still doing the same.

I'm not encountering any major problems (in speed or otherwise) in
continuing to use Textures, although printing typeset output directly
from Classic is still "iffy" with frequent PostScript error messages
(perhaps I don't have the right Classic driver for my HP 6MP
installed). Printing to a .ps file on the desktop, then opening that
file in Acrobat Standard 7.0 always works, however.

One minor problem when editing LaTeX source files with the "Flash"
and "LaTeX mode" options turned on are intermittent, seemingly random
dialog boxes that say

I'm having trouble with "myFile.aux" (in use)

If I click these boxes away, typesetting proceeds with no visible
problems -- just the occasional annoying interruptions every few
minutes. It's been suggested that this may result from some OS X
background application intermittently checking the open .aux file --
e.g., Spotlight, except I'm still in Panther and don't yet have
spotlight.

Any suggestions appreciated.

It was all about the ending of tex-perf. Without=20
any (.sh) it never worked. And - I really don't=20
know why - my version of safari 1.3 (OS 10.3.9)=20
ALLWAYS saved Gerben's link as a txt file=20
(reseting and erasing the cache didn't change=20
anything). So my first attempt was to re-name the=20
file to tex-perf.sh, but that made no difference.=20
It only worked when creating a new file and=20
saving it originally as tex-perf.sh. Well...

But the only thing that really makes me wonder=20
is, why am I the only one having these troubles=20
with that file? Is swear I never changed any=20
thing to Gerben's distro (paths, owner rights=20
etc:), so why do I not drive the same machine=20

I think I remember something similar happening to me. OS X' Finder is so =
=20
kind as to keep the ending of a file from you. If you cd into the =20
directory that holds the tex-perf file and issue an "ls -l" command, does=
 =20
it list tex-perf or tex-perf.sh or does the file have a .txt ending?
Wehn I used Safari it put a txt-suffix to all textfiles downloaded and =20
also editors sometimes tend to append endings by default.

In the finder preferences->Advanced there is an option to show all file=20=

extensions. Is that checked on your system? If it isn't does it make=20=

a difference how the file is listed? It is possible that there was an=20
extension that was hidden, so tex-perf.sh reallyexisted as=20
tex-perf.text.sh or something similar.

I'm not sure that will help here, but anyway: to prevent problems =20
with extensions mixup, or when the Finder doesn't associate an =20
extension properly with a file type and/or with an application, I =20
would recommend rebuilding the Launch Services database routinely. =20
That's a bit similar to rebuilding the Desktop on OS 9 and below.

Before Tiger, that meant deleting the following files, user by user, =20
then restarting (or maybe just logging out/in, I didn't try):

     /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore
     ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.csstore
     ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

With Tiger the organization and naming of these files have changed =20
slightly: apart from the pref file, the cache files are now stored at =20=

a central repository, with names ending up with a user number:

     /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-*.csstore
     ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

Another possibility is that your shell uses some tailored =20
configuration files from your user directory (like a .profile for =20
bash). Is your shell bash or tcsh (that's defined in /Applications/=20
Utilities/NetInfo Manager, look at users then at your account)? Do =20
you have, by any chance, a ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist? I can't see =20
how these could be involved here, but who knows.

As to renaming the files in the Finder, when extensions are involved, =20=

never do this directly: when erasing for example an extension by =20
directly selecting the name in the Finder and editing it, then the =20
extension won't be actually erased, it will simply be hidden. You =20
need to use the Info window (Cmd-I, or File > Get Info).

Finally, regarding Safari: if I understood things correctly, for =20
standards-conforming web browsers, the action done when a file is =20
opened (visualized, downloaded, etc.) in a web page is no longer =20
determined by the browser (=E0 la Internet Explorer, in which you =20
define in the prefs -- or through Internet Config --, extension by =20
extension, what is done with the file, which application is used); =20
instead, it's determined by the configuration of the web server of =20
the web site you're visiting. I don't remember whether this mechanism =20=

works by MIME types or not, but in any case it should not use =20
extensions any longer.

That's why, for example, when you visit some web sites and click on a =20=

link associated with a .dmg file, the file is sometimes visualized as =20=

a text file in a browser window (giving only garbage) instead of =20
being downloaded: the server of the site is improperly configured and =20=

doesn't tell the browser what a .dmg file is; in that case, the =20
default interpretation of a file as text is used. That happens most =20
often with .dmg files, because the .dmg format is specific to OS X =20
and not widely known outside the Mac world.

Most browsers now have taken steps to move away from the (W3C) =20
standard a bit in this area, by recognizing a .dmg file through its =20
extension and doing what's appropriate for it, but that's not always =20
the case. I think Safari does this, but I'm not sure. I remember a =20
time during the evolution of Chimera/Camino, when there were =20
arguments in the associated mailing list between die-hard standards =20
advocates and user-oriented developers, whether this additional =20
functionality should be added or not.

All this to say that, in your case, the automatic addition of the =20
extension .sh to tex-perf, based on (I imagine) the first line "#!/=20
bin/sh", may as well depend on a specific interaction of the TUG web =20
server and your web browser (browser, version), plus some parameters =20
from your setup (the Launch Services database, and who knows what else).

So much for computer science as an exact science!
