Subject: Multiple files, AlphaX and TeXShop
From: "Alan Munn"

Hi, I've started trying AlphaX as my external editor with TeXShop as
the previewer. I'm having the following problem:

Open file1.tex
LaTeX from within Alpha (using Cmd-T); this works fine
Open file2.tex (now both files are open within Alpha)
LaTeX from within Alpha --> doesn't work. It reprocesses file1
instead (so the pdf window for file1 shows up and the console log for
file1 shows up.)

What am I doing wrong?

Alan

This so sloooooow machine is a 400MHz 384MB PowerMac from 2000 IIRC. =20
Was in 10.2.8, upgraded to 10.4.2 when I needed to use it as my =20

any 10.2 or 10.3 machine to test on, unfortunately.

This for the current gwTeX i-Package, I haven't installed the new =20
experimental one yet. Anybody with a MacTel to test on? (Hoping that =20
reporting such result wouldn't violate NDA, of course.)

Not tot+sys, but user+sys, of course. My built-in engine needs more =20

It's not quite what you ask, but Apple Symbols has a glyph =20
representing a movie projector (glyph #1096 in Character Palette, can =20=

be accessed in XeTeX).

Webdings has also a couple of cinema-related glyphs (glyphs #149 and =20
above): movie projector, video projector, celluloid tapes, etc. Given =20=

it's in /Library/Fonts/, I would think it came with Tiger (MS Office =20
fonts are installed in ~/Library/Fonts/).

Hope this helps,

What strikes me is that the test seems to be a lot faster on machines
running Panther (800MHz G4 iBook almost as fast as the 1.25GHz G4
PowerMac, 500MHz G4 Cube about the same as the 1GHz G4 Powerbook).
Might be interesting to see an iBook running Tiger for comparison.

A fast disk (Seagate with 8MB cache) and some memory will make this=20
twice as fast if my G4 Cube is any example. Also, I get the feeling=20
form these reports that 10.4.2 is slower than 10.3.9. Also, having a=20
dual does not help run TeX itself faster. TeX runs on a single=20
processor (single threaded).

The test is of course not very accurate. Most people have different=20
hyphenation sets for instance. Also, compiling a format is different=20
work that compiling a document.

Such a report would violate NDA, I think.

But there is enough public knowledge about the system to make a good=20
guess.

Thanks, the Webdings font is already quite close. A related question: =20=

What's the easiest way to get a single glyph of a font into a LaTeX =20
document? Of course with XeLaTeX I could easily include the font, but =20=

I'm not sure yet if my final output will be XeLaTeX. Now if possible, =20=

I want to avoid all the hassle of font converting etc. just to get =20
this one glyph.

What I want to do: I write my PhD in film studies. There are =20
screenshots, and I plan to create a CD that comes with the printed =20
text which includes short clip. The film wheel (or projector) symbol =20
is to indicate that a whole clip exist on the CD for the screenshot =20
printed. So I need this glyph in the caption.

I thought I could avoid setting up another font by creating a small =20
PDF which just includes this one glyph. This is a bit of a hack, and =20
unfortunately, LaTeX doesn't seem happy about \includegraphics inside =20=

\caption I get:
! Argument of \Hy@tempa has an extra }.

                 \par

The PDF gets created the way I want, but I have the errors, and =20
scaling the PDF doesn't work at all.

Any ideas, what's the easiest way to achieve this?

TIA

simon

Herb Schulz did similar work for including Mac OS symbols (such as =20
the Apple key symbol) in TeX documents, so there should be a way. See =20=

his applekeys package .

It looks like you're using the hyperref package, and the error =20
message relates to a version of \caption modified by this package. =20
The hyperref package is very useful, but I've found extremely =20
difficult to understand/debug/customize the code of its versions of =20
standard LaTeX commands.

That said, the above message might as well be caused by a lack of =20
\protect'ion. Have you attempted to insert a \protect before the =20
\includegraphics? I remember a time when many LaTeX commands (such as =20=

\ref) needed to be \protect'ed when put inside a \caption, though =20
things have got much better.

Hope this helps,

Bruno=

Installed both updates (i-Installer and TeX). Both working OK: I =20
reinstalled XeTeX afterwards, and compiled a XeLaTeX document with no =20=

problem.

Regarding the dialogs during the install:

- After selecting All at the beginning of the process (so that both =20
PPC and i686 binaries are installed), you get a warning telling =20
either some foundation elements are missing, or non-functioning =20
binaries will be installed. That might confuse a casual user, =20
thinking he/she's done something wrong (but a casual user is not =20
supposed to use Expert mode and select TL2005, anyway).

- Also at the selection stage, regarding the programs you have 3 =20
checkboxes:

     TeXLive Programs 2005 i686
     TeXLive Programs 2005 powerpc
     TeXLive 2005 Programs powerpc+i686 extras

At first, I thought that the 3rd item was the concatenation of the =20
first 2 put together (all the more so since the end of "extras" was =20
outside the dialog "text area" and was cut out, leaving only "ext" =20
visible). I found the name of the corresponding files easier to =20
understand (telling the first two are binaries, and the third =20
libraries):

     tl2005-bin-i686
     tl2005-bin-powerpc
     tl2005-lib-universal

A nice thing would be that when the user positions the pointer on an =20
item, the corresponding explanation from the Subprocess Output window =20=

appears in one of these yellow framed boxes (I don't remember the =20
proper computer jargon for these boxes):

### tex.selector: Set "tl2005-bin-i686" description: "This set =20
contains the programs taken from TeXLive 2005. These are the =20
essential binaries you need to run TeX on your system."
### tex.selector: Set "tl2005-bin-powerpc" description: "This set =20
contains the programs taken from TeXLive 2005. These are the =20
essential binaries you need to run TeX on your system."
### tex.selector: Set "tl2005-lib-universal" description: "This set =20
contains extras taken from TeXLive 2005, namely the lib and include =20
directories. You only need this if you want to compile programs =20
against TeX-provided libraries."

Maybe that's already the case, I didn't think about trying at the =20
time. By the way, in the first 2 descriptions, it might be clearer to =20=

replace "on your system" by something like "on an Intel-based Mac" =20
and "on a PowerPC-based Mac", respectively.

Bruno, you're the best! \protect does indeed help and the applekeys =20
package was very illuminating. I now can easily include the font. Now =20=

I just need a font that actually looks the way I want, the projector =20
font is bit too delicate for small sizes.

Thank you very much!

Yes, there is a lot of non-smoothness there and several checks are even
commented out. Currently I am mainly interested if the result works.

Ok. My results were so different from every other result I saw for a
comparable machine that I wondered why. Here's my original result:

1.25Ghz G4 PowerBook 10.4.2 53.53 real 21.50
user 6.87 sys

Several runs produced comparable results. Here is the result I get
after shutting down all active programs other than the terminal and
the finder.

1.25Ghz G4 PowerBook 10.4.2 27.53 real 20.86
user 5.61 sys

This is quite a difference.

In that case you may be more interested by bitmapped fonts, or =20

Howdy,

Very good idea! I just updated the applekeys package so that you can
include the apple keys in Section Headings and Table of Contents. It
still doesn't work with the hyperref package directly so I'll play
with it some more.

You can pick up the applekeys package from my download site, as applekeys.zip.

Good Luck,

Subject: Word count algorithm
From: "Matthew Inglis"
Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 15:32:44 +0100

Hello,

I am curious about the procedure TeXShop uses (or teTeX uses) to
produce a word count. For example, I am currently working on a
document (mostly text, few formulae) and have used two methods of
getting a word count:

(i) TeXShop's in built "Statistics..." panel.
(ii) copy and pasting everything from the output pdf into Word and
using its word count.

The first gives a figure of 37192 and the second gives a figure of
52063. Now I realise that word counts are only ever estimates, but
the size of this difference seems extraordinary. Even after deleting
the bibliography and contents from the Word file, the figure is still
over 10,000 higher than TeX's.

I'm not worried about this, just curious. Can anyone explain it?

Best wishes

Matthew.

Make sure you have the latest ghostscript 8 installed.

If that does not help, I'd like to see the entire log for clues.

OK, let me be more precise. It is indeed true that if there are many
processes, your own process also takes longer by itself. The reasons are
probably that the memory of your process is swapped out, that your data i=
s
not in the file system cache or the cache on disk, etc. 77.71 versus 70.4=
6
for user+sys is the effect of such inefficiencies. Still ,that is a 10%
error. If you interpret thses figures, you can look at the difference
between user+sys and real to see how heavily taxed the machine was.

This is not really a scientific test ;-)
