Howdy,

Although I haven't had a chance to test it yet I think the suggestion
made by Johan Almqvist might just work!

I'm going to make the latex engine line (using latex+dvips+distiller):

GS_OPTIONS=3D"-dAutoRotatePages=3D/None" ; altpdflatex --maxpfb

and see if that works. I'm only concerned that altpdftlatex writes
over GD_OPTIONS so I'll have to take a look at that.

Good Luck,

Hi all,

This is off-topic, but may be a warning for some people on
this list to *not* apply the latest G5 system Security Update.

If you have already done so and are experiencing problems
with some apps, then here's the reason.

Cheers,

     Ross

This update may also cause trouble on G4's running Panther (10.3.9).

I installed the latest security update on a G4 running Panther about
five hours before this post arrived. Thereafter, many Mac apps,
including Safari and Mail would not start. BBEdit wouldn't start.
However, TeXShop, Mathematica v5.0 (or maybe v5.1--but definitely not
v5.2), and Geometer's Sketchpad ran fine. I don't know whether this
was related to the update or not. The machine was the one on my desk
at work, so I had one of the IT people look at it. She ran Disk
Warrior, noted that it didn't fix the problem, threw up her hands, and
installed Tiger. She immediately ran System Update and installed all
of the updates. Don't know whether Apple had quit distributing the
latest security update or not, but everything seems to work fine now.

My PowerBook G4 runs Tiger 10.4.2 with Security Update 2005-007.

Yesterday evening, after a whole day working on web stuff, with many =20
windows and tabs opened in Safari (about 7 windows, and 8 tabs in =20
each), suddenly Safari stopped working: it couldn't display any =20
single new page, halting at the beginning of the page download =20
process (the blue progression bar started growing, then stopped), and =20=

not giving away any error message in either the Activity Monitor or =20
in the various log files in Console.

What was weird is that Mail continued working, and Firefox, Camino =20
etc. could display web pages OK. Thus it didn't seem to be any sort =20
of networking problem. I logged off/on, and also restarted: no joy. =20
The problem was still there in Safari.

I went back home rather upset, thinking about repairing permissions, =20
trying to isolate faulty pref or cache files, and fearing I'll have =20
to go through an OS X Archive & Install ordeal once more. Then =20
surprise: at home, after switching to a new Location (i.e., network =20
configuration), then Safari was working again. Back at work today, =20
it's still working too.

Could the problem be related with the security update, given what =20
you're reporting?

Well, it turns out to be a totally different problem: to have access =20
to the online scientific periodical collection of my university's =20
library, I need to specify a proxy auto-config server; and suddenly =20
yesterday at some point this server has started preventing Safari =20
users from reading web pages. Not really preventing, but making very =20
sloooooow: even the home page of my department (on the same LAN) =20
takes about 3 mins to display. This only affects Safari, not Firefox, =20=

Mozilla, Camino, Explorer or Opera. As soon as the proxy-auto config =20
is disabled, things work fine. I have contacted the library computer =20
help desk, and am waiting for the response.

I think you should present a default preamble like that one Bruno=20

     \usepackage{fontspec} % for AAT/OT fonts

Actually it was Calvin W. Jackson, Jr. on August 4th who asked whether=20=

In Preferences -> Composition:
when xelatex is checked you should grey-out pdfLaTeX (since xeLaTeX=20=

when in latex+dvipdf you should grey-out pdfLaTeX
xeLaTeX is probably more correctly spelled as 'X=C9=98LaTeX' (=C9=98 =

I am missing a chooser to choose any of the three possible ways to=20

The version 1.4.1 produces in /tmp//TemporaryItems 2 TeX files ...=20=

TeX file #2 contains the sizes code and is processed always by=20
pdfLaTeX. So these errors come up:

I put all XeLaTeX-related stuff inside /usr/local/teTeX/share/=20

Regarding the search path, I've just thought about asking kpsewhich:

Howdy,

I believe a fix might be in the next version of TeXShop. I remember
that switching the display to Single-Page fixed it but with the page
jumping I don't like. I just live with it for now.

Good Luck,

I hope that a fix comes soon. When viewing an entire page (to avoid
the jumping), it is hard to catch errors since everything is so small
(even on a 17" PowerBook).

Is there any simple way of using the prosper class for slides with

The simple answer seems to be "no", but if anyone has any
suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

Prosper is is written on top of the seminar class by Timothy Van
Zandt. Since he has posted to this list, he would be the best to
respond. Failing that, you might try what I tried, albeit with
seminar. I had problems with seminar after switching to pdfLaTeX.
Here are some excerpts from my post to this list on 15/06/05. Maybe
some of the patches will work with prosper. You might like to try the
fixseminar.sty as well.

My files in document class 'seminar' are in landscape mode. These
would typeset OK but not preview and print properly with PdfLaTeX,
all content are pushed up and to the left, the same effect described
by someone here trying to use \magnification in PdfTeX. Tried
typesetting with 'TeX and Ghostscript' and and it worked.

[If pdfLaTeX is still preferred...] Searching the internet resulted
in a work-around, one needs to add a few lines of code, enclosed at
the end of this message. There is also a package 'fixseminar.sty' but
this didn't work for me, maybe this only works as part of the
TeXPower package.
To use landscape mode in seminar with PdfLaTeX put the following code
in your preamble and all will be OK. Thanks to the pdftex

Jan, in fact the bibtex source code is itself proper documentation - =20
it's written in the same literate programming style as TeX. The file =20
is both the original pascal source code and the =20
documentation thoroughly explaining it.

To get a tex file out of that web file, use the command 'weave':
weave bibtex.web

The resulting file contains a typeset version of the source code that =20=

is much more readable than the usual program source.

I did have some troubles getting the resulting tex file to typeset =20
with my current version of TeX, possibly because it is 20 years old, =20
so perhaps someone with more time or experience could help solve that.

Also, in the btparse source code, the grammar used for bibtex is =20
relatively well commented, so you could take a look at that also, if =20
you are inclined to read language grammars. We have a copy of it in =20
the bibdesk CVS here:

Howdy,

Does it use the accelerometer built into the recent PowerBooks (and =20
latest iBooks too)? Do they mean that the Window itself rotated or =20
does the wheel rotate?

There used to be an external monitor that could be oriented landscpe =20
or portrait and the screen would switch. That was under OS 9. I think =20=

it disappeared under OS X but there may be a newer version now.

The problem looks odd. bibtex.tex calls pdfwebmac.tex (with pdfTeX) =20
or ordwebmac.tex (otherwise), which define both several control =20
sequences starting with \E:

\def\E{\cdot10^} % exponent in floating point constant
\def\ET{ and~} % conjunction between two section numbers
\def\ETs{, and~} % conjunction between the last two of several =20
section numbers

Then, bibtex.tex uses \ETs:

280, 281, 284, 293, 294, 295, 310, 311, 313, 321, 356, 368, 373\ETs456.

But it seems with current TeX this control sequence can't be read: =20
TeX stops after reading \E, replaces \E by its definition \cdot^10, =20
and, realizing it's not in math mode, returns an error:

! Missing $ inserted.

                 $

                    \cdot
\E->\cdot
           10^
 ... 310, 311, 313, 321, 356, 368, 373\E
                                                   Ts456
\note ...ndent 2em\baselineskip 10pt\eightrm #1~#2
                                                   .\par }
l.179 ...310, 311, 313, 321, 356, 368, 373\ETs456.

What can have changed in modern TeX, that makes \ETs an invalid =20
control sequence?

Dell makes some LCD displays that you can rotate into a portrait =20
orientation. I have read numerous places that Mac OS X senses the =20
rotation and automatically rotates the video output to accommodate. =20
This is without installing any additional drivers. Go to:

http://www.macintouch.com/cinemadisplays10.html

and search for "rotate".

When you get the Dell, tell us how well it works. ;-)

Only a wild guess... is there anything that is changing the catcode =20
of T so it isn't a normal character? That would terminate the command =20=

after the \E. Sounds rather weird.

Oh yes: at the beginning of bibtex.tex you can find code changing the =20=

catcode of E:

% Note: WEAVE will typeset an upper-case `E' in a PASCAL identifier a
% bit strangely so that the `TeX' in the name of this program is typeset
% correctly; if this becomes a problem remove these three lines to get
% normal upper-case `E's in PASCAL identifiers
\def\drop{\kern-.1667em\lower.5ex\hbox{E}\kern-.125em} % middle of TeX
\catcode`E=3D13 \uppercase{\def E{e}}
\def\\#1{\hbox{\let E=3D\drop\it#1\/\kern.05em}} % italic type for =20
identifiers

Comment out these lines, then bibtex.tex typesets OK.

Thus it seems the documented code of BibTeX, written in February =20
1988, was never meant to work with the current version of webmac.tex, =20=

apparently dating back to September 1990!
