Note that by including the line:

     MANPATH_MAP /usr/local/bin /usr/local/share/man

the default mapping (to /usr/local/man) is overridden.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've used iTeXMac before, but have run into issues with it so I prefer
TeXShop. I downloaded the latest version and after a quick look did not =
see
any version control support.

I did not know that TexShop could create a backup file since the option is =

not in the preferences GUI. I found that it was a hidden feature by
searching the help. I think having hidden features are bad ideas. But, =
now
that I have it turned on it should be helpful.

In response to questions of why I would want such a feature... I worry
about accidentally deleting something and not noticing it before I save (a =

backup will help with that). I also would like to be able to retrieve old =

versions for situations where I change something and then my committee
changes their mind and wants the old version back (or I just change my =
mind
later). For a document that I'm spending 6-8 months writing it would be
nice to be able to see the changes over time. (If you haven't guessed by
now, I'm a PhD student).

I could maintain manual versions, but I was hoping for a more automated =
way
of doing it. As I was writing this I had the idea of creating a folder
action so when the file is saved a copy it placed somewhere else. That
would end up creating a lot of files, but it would maintain an accurate
trail of changes and would be completely automated. The idea of doing
manual CVS (or Subversion) is also a good idea.

Andy.

I use iTeXMac, but it doesn't have built-in support for versioning.
It does have support for hard-wrapping lines, which is necessary for
cvs/diff commands.

I used cvs when writing my dissertation; it's incredibly helpful if
you accidentally delete something or discover six months later that
you were right the first time, or perhaps want an earlier version of
a figure. In fact, I've been using it for everything over a few
pages in length, and I also keep my BibTeX databases in cvs.

I find CVL works well for me as a GUI, since it lets you view log
messages and easily see diffs with FileMerge.

I tried that manual versioning thing for a while, but it's messy, to
say the least. Using a versioning system will make your life easier
in the long run; it's a great way to make the computer do some work
for you.

the file

So mds it probably the short form of mdserver.

This is indeed what was causing grief. Doing now, in Terminal,

     sudo pico /usr/share/misc/man.conf

removing my former manual addition of

      MANPATH /usr/local/man

commenting out (with a #) the default line

     MANPATH_MAP /usr/local/bin /usr/local/share/man

and saving these modifications, I get now

     legimc11:~ brunovoisin$ manpath
     /usr/share/man:/usr/local/man:/usr/local/teTeX/man:/usr/X11R6/man

And "man convert" does indeed work!

Thus it's Apple which ships a man.conf with a broken (or, at least, =20
odd) setup.

Many thanks,

I you work on the same document with several people, making changes all ove=

the place, it's a wonderful tool (although I suggest subversion instead).

Also if you work on different computers (home & office) you can easily keep

Hello Andrew!

TeXShop has the option to use regular expressions, for example changing=20=

in a marked region ^ to % or `% today's date=B4 etc. So you can have=20
versions of your text in the same file -- a much better concept would=20
be, to have one *master* file that just contains something like:

\documentclass{book}
   \includeonly{chapter1}%, chapter2, chapter3, ...
\begin{document}
   \include{chapter1}
   \include{chapter2}
   \include{chapter3}
   ...
\end{document}

TeXShop needs a special header for that master file to recognise all=20
inclusions and errors in them. The \includeonly allows you to optimise=20=

single files -- and you don't loose everything in case you do the=20
unspeakable.

Thanks for making this available. Given these are FFIL screen font =20
files and LWFN printer font files, I imagine they have to be =20
installed in the Classic font folder, right? That's what I did, and =20
it seems to work.

Regarding the Utopia fonts, and their Mac version on CTAN, I've only =20
been able to find (on the UK site ftp.cam.ctan.org) the Mac version =20
prepared for OzTeX, at . However, these are, again, in =20
Classic format only, as LWFN printer font files, plus a file "Utopia =20
(fam).scr" which ResEdit reveals to contain the screen fonts in the =20
form of resources. How can they be installed? I've tried to drop them =20=

onto the Classic System Folder, but they aren't seen by Font Book =20
afterwards (contrary to the Fourier fonts).

In any case, the above are relatively short-lived solutions, given =20
that, if Apple doesn't change its plans by then, Classic will become =20
officially dead when MacTels are released next year.

Probably. I was saying that with reference to the fact that man =20

associated man directory /dir/man. But I've no idea what the =20

Howdy,

You might try BBEdit since it does interface with CVS. There are
macros available to have TeXShop do the LaTeX processing as well as
help in the writing of the document.

Good Luck,

Howdy,

I like ManOpen so much that quite a while ago I added

alias man=3D"openman"
alias appropos=3D"openman -k"

to my ~/.bash_profile and have the man paths

/usr/local/man
/usr/share/man
/usr/local/teTeX/man
/usr/X11R6/man

in ManOpen's preferences.

Am I missing anything?

Wow, what a great job you have that will send you to Aruba and Cura=E7ao=20=

for "work". Make sure you get some beach time in (they are the best=20
beaches I have ever seen) and drink a few Amstel Brights! (You might=20
have to drink more than a few since their too small!)

Subject: Latexit , Keynote and linkback
From: "Donal Day"

I am running 10.4.2, LaTexIt 1.3.1, and Keynote 2.0

I downloaded the Linkback plugin for Keynote 2 and found it to work
just fine with LaTexIt - once.

Since that initial success, LaTexIt fails to start (under any
conditions) - I have to force quit.

I have reinstalled Keynote and LaTexIt with no success.

Does the Linkback installer for Keynote place some other files that I
can remove. How can I get LaTexIt working for me again?

Thanks,

Donal

This is very strange indeed.
Here are some things you can do :
-put Library/Preferences/fr.club.ktd.LaTeXiT.plist file in trash (the
preferences)
-put Library/LaTeXiT folder in trash (the auto saved history and
library)

I think that a corruption in the preferences cannot hang LaTeXiT. But
a corruption of the History and the Library should neither trigger
any problem, since I try to catch every failure while reading them.
Therefore, I do not know what could fail on your system, and I am
afraid you could encounter it again (even if you are the very first
one to report me such a bug). So, do not hesitate to keep me
informed. Did you use previous versions of LaTeXiT ? Perhaps it is an
unexpected incompatibility in the file formats...

By the way, a 1.4.0 version of LaTeXiT will be rolled out within the
next few days. I just wait for the report of my last beta-tester.

Regards,

Pierre Chatelier

Pierre,

Your suggestions did the trick.

I moved my Library/LaTeXiT/history.dat and library.dat files back and
LateXiT hung again. Perhaps my history file went back to the Panther
version of LaTeXiT but I just started adding items to the library.

I'll proceed and keep you informed.

Thanks,

Donal
