Try using  \refstepcounter  instead of  \stepcounter .

You may try rebuilding the Launch Services database. I'm not quite =20
sure it will help, but who knows?

Before Tiger, this meant deleting the following files, then restarting:

     /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore
     ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.csstore
     ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

On Tiger the organization and naming of the files have changed, it =20
should be something like:

     /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
     /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore
     /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-014504.csstore
     ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

The names of the files inside /Library/Caches/ will probably be =20
different on your setup, the digits at the end of the name refer to =20
the user ID; I think 0140 is general, and there should be one 0145** =20
per user account.

Hello,

Bad news, LaTeXiT version 1.3.2 will never be released. Good news, it
has just been renamed 1.4.0
It's not fair to just say that it has changed its name. My personal
interface guru gave me some piece of advice to improve LaTeXiT and
make it more "apple compliant". So, there has been revamping of the
application.
No functionality has been lost, I even fixed some bugs. But there is
a small risk that something has been silently broken. If you want to
have a look on the next version and track regressions...

Does this mean this error will continue:

-interaction nonstopmode /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/latexit-1.tex=20=

I've set 'pdfLaTeX' to be xelatex ...=20
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0/xelatex to be exact.

I did not try to fix xelatex use for now, since I still did not
install it. Prior to that, could you just see if you can make it work
by changing the preamble ? You gave me the following one :
It's easy to change the preamble in LaTeXiT.

Changing the preamble is easy (and returning to factory defaults), but
it does not work to change the binary! It only works in the
preferences, but not in real live execution. I can't 'pdflatex' with
the set xelatex, that's it ... (what I am trying to tell)

Aaah, okay, I did not understand that, because it is a bug ! In fact,
since I add the "latex+dvips" option, the path of pdflatex was
ignored from the preferences and hard-coded in the source code. My
fault.
I have fixed that, maybe you can just retry now

Great! It works to run xelatex!

But: XeLaTeX does not seem to understand the second line of the
template:

	\usepackage[pdftex]{color} %used for font color

It is together with the first line invariable ...

OK, my XeLaTeX knowledge is now at its end. Calvin, can you try to find
a decent template for XeLaTeX? (Or maybe two, one for math, one for
text?)

If someones knows the equivalent for xelatex, I could make it work :-)

It's quite simple actually: Don't specify an option to color. It's smart =

enough to pick an appropriate one.

The "check for update" doesn't work ... it still report the 1.3.2 to
be the latest version ...

Howdy,

I think that there are ``special'' versions of the color and graphics/
graphicx packages that understand the xetex option so

\usepackage[xetex]{color]

should work. On the other hand, I never have had a problem just
leaving out the option; the packages seem to be smart enough to
figure things out for themselves. YMMV.

Good Luck,

Okay, it works. Strange. I remember that I put this a long time ago
to make it work with pdflatex, and now it seems useless. But it's ok.

Check for update should report 1.3.1 to be the latest version. 1.3.2
has never been released and 1.4.0 is still beta, so if you own one of
them, you should be told that you a have a "more recent version that
the one officialy released".
If it's different, it may be a bug.

The trickery is done in the config files color.cfg and graphics.cfg. =20
The default ones in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/latex/=20
graphics/ check whether commands specific to pdfTeX and VTeX =20
(\pdfoutput and \OpMode, respectively) are defined. If so, the =20
appropriate option is passed on to the color and graphics packages; =20
if not, the [dvips] option is selected.

At installation time, XeTeX adds modified files color.cfg and =20
graphics.cfg in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/xelatex/=20
graphics/. These files check, in addition, whether the command =20
\XeTeXversion specific to XeTeX is defined. If so, the option [xetex] =20=

is selected automatically.

I have updated LateXiT 1.4.0 beta so that it uses \usepackage{color}

So it may work with xelatex. I am just afraid that people can now

Thanks much. I can't believe I missed the \refstepcounter. However, changin=
g
\stepcounter to \refstepcounter as follows gives an error:

\newcounter{exmp}[chapter]
\newcommand{\bex}{\renewcommand{\theexmp}{\refstepcounter{exmp}\thechapter.=
a
rabic{exmp}}\vspace{11pt}\par\noindent{\bf Example
\theexmp}\vspace{11pt}\par\noindent\begin{inpar}\parskip=3D2pt plus 0.5pt}

However, if I do the following (pulling \refstepcounter{exmp} out of the
definition of \renewcommand)

\newcounter{exmp}[chapter]
\newcommand{\bex}{\refstepcounter{exmp}\renewcommand{\theexmp}{\thechapter.=
\
arabic{exmp}}\vspace{11pt}\par\noindent{\bf Example
\theexmp}\vspace{11pt}\par\noindent\begin{inpar}\parskip=3D2pt plus 0.5pt}

works without giving an error, assigns the correct example number, but the
first \ref gives only the value of the example number, without the chapter
prefix, i.e.,

\bex\label{ex1}
...
\eex

generates (correctly)
    Example 4.1 ...

but "In Example \ref{ex1}" generates

    In Example 1

References to subsequent examples work properly, i.e., I do get

    Example 4.2 ...

    In Example 4.2

Any further suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Full success with this header:

	\documentclass[10pt]{article}
	\usepackage{color} %used for font color
	\usepackage{osxfonts}
	\DeclareFontFamily{U}{osx}{}
	\DeclareFontShape{U}{osx}{m}{n}{<-> "Hoefler\space Text"}{}
	\DeclareSymbolFont{break}{U}{osx}{m}{n}

There are just two things that are not working: scaling and colouring=20
the output.

Honestly, I have to read more about how LaTeXiT works, to decide=20
whether this is a bug or two or none ...

Calvin, can you try now?

\theexmp is supposed to give you the representation of the `exmp' counter=
. =20
I think this is closer to what you want.

\newcounter{exmp}[chapter]
\renewcommand*\theexmp{\thechapter.\arabic{exmp}}
\newcommand*\bex{%
   \par \vspace{11pt}%
   \noindent
   \refstepcounter{exmp}%
   \textbf{Example \theexmp}%
   \par \vspace{11pt}%
   \noindent \begin{inpar}%
     \setlength\parskip{2pt plus 0.5pt}%
}

You may note that \bf has been obsolete for more than ten years.
