Howdy,

But in T1 font encoding accented character are not built from accents=20

Indeed. I did use Latin Modern for a while, but now I prefer CM-super.

Hi,

I am looking for a way to convert a bibtex file (made with bibdesk in
the utf-8 encoding) to a format that can be read by endnote 7 or 8. I
have followed the suggestions on the following two sites, but without
luck.

Is there another way?

I have agreed to put together a conference booklet with a schedule,
abstracts, index, etc for a meeting with about 400 submissions. I'd
like to use LaTeX if possible, but I can't seems to track down any
decent .cls files. Does anyone have any experience with conference
booklets in TeX?

Cheers,
Jason

Hi

I did a conference book some time ago, but couldn't find any cls
either. Since I was pressed for time I just used the standard book-
cls. The biologists/doctors that attended the conference were deeply
impressed (being used to Windoze it obviously doesn't take that
much), however I wasn't that pleased with the final result.

If you want something to start from, improve on etc. I'll be happy to
send you the files...

Best regards,
Steffen

I use bibutils:

bib2xml file.bib | xml2end > file.enl

Then do an Import->EndNote Import on file.enl. You have to build
bibutils of course, which requires you to have installed the Apple
developers tools and doing a 'make' in the source directory, then
moving the executables somewhere in your path i.e. /usr/loca/bin.

There's been threads on this subject before. Search the archives for
"conference proceedings" for the solution (not a STFA, I just can't
remember what people said).

bibutils binaries are available from

http://www.scripps.edu/~cdputnam/software/bibutils/bibutils.html

I'll ask Chris if I can redistribute via an i-Package (would be
extremely simple)

Hi,

I'm sorry but I can no longer answer individual requests for help on =20
TeX matters.

After some time posting to the Mac OS TeX list, I started receiving =20
direct requests like this one. Though startled, I did my best to =20
help. It could take anything between 10 mins and several hours, and =20
require several email exchanges. Often, after proposing a solution I =20
stopped receiving anything from the person having requested help, =20
which I suppose means the solution worked. I found this lack of =20
feedback and consideration rather frustrating and ungratifying, and =20
decided to stop answering direct help requests.

There is a whole community of Mac TeX users, some newcomers and =20
others very experienced, willing to help and to share the solution of =20=

any particular problem, so that others can benefit from the solution =20
as well. See the Mac-TeX site , and =20
the two mailing lists "Mac OS X TeX" (very active) and "Mac OS X TeX =20
Fonts" (not very active).

Regarding the Lucida fonts, there's the general tutorial at and a =20
number of past threads at the Mac OS X TeX list. A few years back, I =20
think, Gary Gray has posted a message describing the conversion and =20
installation process in detail, for the Textures Lucida fonts, though =20=

I cannot locate this message in the list archive.

I'm cc'ing this message to the OS X TeX list, as I'm sure there'll be =20=

people there able to help you in no time.

Good luck,

Bruno Voisin

Subject: How to insert {braces} in Aquamacs Emacs?
From: "Mika Luoma-aho"
Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2005 12:03:14 +0300

Right,

this is a very basic question from a very beginner user of Aquamacs
Emacs (most recent beta).

How on earth do I insert braces, i.e. {these} ?? I've spent 30
minutes on this and still can't get my head around it. Aquamacs looks
very powerful, customisable and the tex-support is top drawer, but
the GUI is, well, esoteric.

If I am reading Emacs manual correctly, pressing 1) ctrl-c and 2)
{ should give me {}. Instead, I get `C-c M-( is undefined'.

Apologies,

Mika.

You probably press alt-( to get {, but the alt key is set to be the
meta key.

You could try this:

         (setq mac-pass-option-to-system t)
         (setq mac-command-key-is-meta t)
         (setq mac-option-modifier nil)
         (setq mac-command-modifier nil)
         (setq mac-control-modifier nil)

and maybe this is necessary too:

         (osx-key-reset-mode-map)

to have a more usual keyboard layout.

Subject: embedding all fonts with pdftex
From: "Emile de Kleine"

Hi,

I use TeXShop with pdftex (from Gerben Wierda's i-Installer):
> This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.20a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)

which produces a pdf file, of course.

Now, I need to embed all fonts.
(In my case, some fonts are embedded, but not fonts like Arial,
Helvetica and Times; I guess these are the 14 base fonts.)

Is there an easy -maybe not so easy- way to do this?

Emile

The following should fix this for all of pdfTeX, dvips and dvipdfm: =20
run in sequence, in Terminal:

     sudo updmap --setoption dvipsDownloadBase35 true
     sudo updmap --setoption pdftexDownloadBase14 true
     sudo updmap --setoption dvipdfmDownloadBase14 true

The values of these options are set when the TeX i-Package is =20
installed, during the configuration process: at one point you're =20
asked whether you want the "standard" PS font (Times, Helvetica, =20
etc.) to be included in PDF output, the default answer being No. =20
You're offered this option in Expert mode, I'm not sure it's visible =20
otherwise.

Hope this helps,

Bruno Voisin=

No, Arial is none of these fonts. They are: Times, Helvetica, Courier,
Palatino, Bookman, NewCenturySchlbk, AvantGarde, Helvetica-Narrow,
ZapfChancery-MediumItalic, ZapfDingbats, and Symbol. These are part of
PostScript.

Another way to change the behaviour of the usual PostScript fonts is to
launch i-Installer again and now to configure only to make them become
downloaded.

That would be really cool. Updates would be so much more automatic.

That's the traditional ``Laserwriter Gang of 35'' which were enshrined
as a standard when Apple selected them for inclusion in the
Laserwriter.

The core 13 fonts for Adobe Acrobat is a bit more complex since they
started out as a subset of the above:

Times, Helvetica, Courier (four weights / styles each) and Symbol

and then around Adobe Acrobat 4's release, Adobe got tired of paying
royalties to Linotype and lowered their price point by substituting the
Monotype fonts Times New Roman PS MT and Arial MT.

I personnaly do not use xetex, so I did not test it with LaTeXiT. But
it seems absolutely possible for me to add its support. I just have
to now which is the good command line to run.
What would be the equivalent of

However, I do not really understand the error :
> ! LaTeX Error: File `osxfonts.sty' not found.
Is this related to the default preamble ? Perhaps xetex does not
support the same packages as the ones I use by default. Maybe it
would just work by changing the preamble ?

One more thing : xetex seems not to be available neither in i-
installer, nor on fink. How could I test it myself ?

Thank you. With this method it was possible to import my bib-file to
endnote. There are some problems with the conversion of non ascii
characters and it turns out that endnote 8 no longer has a global
search and replace option, although endnote 7 had. Unfortunately I
cannot import the converted bib-file into endnote 7. Is there a
solution to this poblem?
I tried to use the -u (for unicode) flag on bib2xml, but it did not
help.

Apparently, simply this:

xelatex -file-line-error -interaction nonstopmode

Once XeTeX is installed, here's what help yields:

legimc11:~ brunovoisin$ xetex --help
Usage: xetex [OPTION]... [TEXNAME[.tex]] [COMMANDS]
    or: xetex [OPTION]... \FIRST-LINE

Any remaining COMMANDS are processed as XeTeX input, after TEXNAME =20=

is read.
If the first line of TEXNAME is %&FMT, and FMT is an existing .fmt =20=

file,
use it. Else use `NAME.fmt', where NAME is the program invocation =20=

name,
   most commonly `xetex'.

Alternatively, if the first non-option argument begins with a =20
backslash,
interpret all non-option arguments as a line of XeTeX input.

Alternatively, if the first non-option argument begins with a &, the

remaining arguments are processed as above.

You can try the dedicated XeTeX mailing list .

I suspect osxfonts.sty was the original name of the package known =20
presently as fontspec.sty , but I'm not sure.

It's possible an elaborate preamble would need to be written, as Xe=20
(La)TeX allows to replace text fonts by OS X fonts seamlessly, but =20
there are some issues with math fonts (which LaTeXiT is probably more =20=

prone to using), especially with regards to accents. Will Robertson, =20
the developer of the fontspec package (see below), has devoted a lot =20
of attention to this.

XeTeX is either available as a .pkg package for Apple's Installer =20
, or as an i-Package for i-=20
Installer in the i-Directory "Jonathan Kew's i-Directory @ SIL" =20
. See also .

Hope this helps,

I think Endnote likes MacOSRoman encoding, but I don't know if
bibutils works with that. I'd suggest saving as RIS from BibDesk in
Mac Roman encoding, then trying to load the RIS file directly into
Endnote.

That definitely does not work. I only write in English, so I do not
have this problem, but perhaps you can make a copy the bib file and do
the editing before you use bibutils.

All=F4 Pierre!

All *tex programmes use the same 'core foundation' so they accept the=20
same basic arguments like '-file-line-error' or '-interaction=20
nonstopmode'.

XeTeX comes in two forms: a TeX version and a LaTeX version, called=20
XeLaTeX, the latter would fit perfectly into LaTeXiT. And the latter=20
needs a STY file like osxfonts.sty to be able to use the Mac OS X fonts=20=

in LaTeX! There is no need to add special support for XeLaTeX since it=20=

finds all the necessary files due to settings in texmf.cnf.

The strange thing that happened yesterday to me was, that although I=20
could change the pdfLaTeX binary in the preferences to become XeLaTeX,=20=

this new setting wasn't used to execute the short example.

I am not the experienced XeTeX user, so I just tried to copy a header=20
for some test. In case you would like to create a XeLaTeX template for=20=

math typing Calvin or Bruno (or the author, Jonathan Kew) could supply=20=

a better recommendation. I think just copied a piece from one doc:

	\documentclass[12pt,a4paper]{article}
	\usepackage{osxfonts}
	\renewcommand{\encodingdefault}{U}
	\NewOSXFontFamily{hoefler}{Hoefler Text}
	\renewcommand{\rmdefault}{hoefler}
=09
	\begin{document}

	\textbf{Bold text}.
	\textit{Italic text}.
	\textbf{\textit{Bold italic text}}.
	\textsc{Small caps text \textbf{including bold}}.

	...

You see, it's not very different!

(Have you heard or read of ConTeXt? The good thing is: it is TeX, not=20
LaTeX ...)

Subject: Using Acrobat Distiller instead of pstopdf
From: "Timothy Van Zandt"
Date: Fri, 05 Aug 2005 11:23:08 -0400

Hello! I don't participate much in this forum, but I enjoy browsing and
would like to give a huge THANKS to those behind I-Installer and
TeXShop, making Mac OS X the premier platform for using TeX, the way
NextStep/Openstep once was (sniff).

Now probably no one else cares about using Acro Distiller instead of
pstopdf or ps2pdf with TeXshop, or anyone who does care long ago figure
it out. But here I give a simple solution. (A year ago I tried briefly
to do this and even posted a few questions, but was unsuccessful.)

[Why do I want to use Acro Distiller? I want the tex-dvips-pstopdf route
because I still use a lot of eps files and pstricks stuff and am too
lazy to make all this compatible with pdflatex. I prefer Distiller
because it creates smaller files (often 40% smaller when selecting
compatibility with Acro 5.0) and embeds all fonts (whereas, for example,
pstopdf does not embed Times-Roman, which can cause problems with the
euro glyph).]

The first thing is to create a command-line version of distiller. This
requires an AppleScript to invoke Distiller and a sh script to invoke
the AppleScript. For example, here is an AppleScript that takes one
argument, which is the name of the PostScript file, with full path and
".ps" extension.

------------
on run argv
	tell application "Acrobat Distiller 6.0.2"
Distill sourcePath item 1 of argv
	end tell
end run
------------

It will just use the default Distiller settings. Other options can be
found at
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/sdk/pdf/pdf_creation_=
apis_and_specs/DistillerAPIReference.pdf

Here is a simple sh command that invokes it (assuming that the
applescript is /tvz/bin/dodist.scpt), taking the same argument and
passing it to the AppleScript:

-------------
#! /bin/sh

osascript /tvz/bin/dist.scpt $1
-----------------

I was too lazy to write my own "personal script" for TeXShop. So instead
I pretend with TeXShop that I am using ghostscript and I copy my sh
script to /usr/local/bin/ps2pdf13, which, for me at least, ends up
getting invoked by TeXShop. (This last part is clearly a hack and I'm
not sure it would always work.)

Or you can give the following flag to simpdftex (altpdftex) in your
TeXShop settings

         --distiller prog
Use a distiller different from ps2pdf which is the

So to get this clear (I am a little bit confused): T1 hyphenates
words with accents or umlauts correct, but CM-Super and Latin Modern
differ?! Why is that? Does that mean CM-Super and/or Latin Modern
hyphenation is incorrect or not optimal?

I do not think the rules of hyphenation differ in CM-Super and Latin =20
Modern, these do not depend on the font directly.

With the standard CM fonts, the accented characters do not exist as =20
such: they are composites, built at the time a TeX document is =20
typeset, by combining accent characters with non-accented letters. =20
For example, =E9 is in fact the composite e + =B4. It is input through a =
=20
command \'e, so that for example the French word an=E9mie (anaemia) =20
would be entered as an\'emie. Alas: TeX cannot hyphenate words =20
containing commands; as a consequence, any word containing an =20
accented letter cannot be hyphenated at all as long as CM fonts are =20
used.

However, the babel package introduces some trickery, such that a word =20=

containing a command is separated in two parts, which can each be =20
hyphenated individually, yielding possible hyphenation either before =20
or after the accent. This is better, but not optimal yet, as not all =20
possible break points will be found, and those that are found are not =20=

necessarily correct.

With T1 fonts, on the contrary, and assuming you use the inputenc =20
package with the correct encoding, you are both (1) entering accented =20=

letters as letters on your keyboard (like =E9), thanks to the inputenc =20=

package, avoiding the resort to commands, and (2) getting output in =20
which the accented letters are individual characters (like =E9), thanks =20=

to the fontenc package and to the installation of the appropriate =20
fonts. And your hyphenation points are finally correct!

Regarding CM-Super and Latin Modern, the difference has another =20
origin: the metrics of the two font sets are very subtly different. =20
This means that the width of each letter, and the amount of white =20
space between letters, is very slightly different between the two =20
sets. As a consequence, it may happen that the word to be hyphenated =20
at the end of a line in a long paragraph is different when either set =20=

is used, yielding different hyphenated words. However, the =20
hyphenation rules and algorithm in the two cases should be exactly =20
the same.

Sorry. When EndNote imports the ris file, not all of the fields that
are present in the ris export file show up in the EndNote imported
file. For example, one entry in my .ris file is:

TY - JOUR
AU - Masao Iri,
AU - Sigeiti, Moriguti
AU - Yoshimitsu, Takasawa
TA - Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics
MO - February
IP - 1-2
PG - 3-20
TI - On a certain quadrature formula
VL - 17
DP - 1987
ER -

However, the only fields that are imported into EndNote are the
authors, title, volume and entry type. The other fields seem to be
discarded. This is with EndNote 8.

Endnote would not import the RIS-file, so I saved my bib-file in the =20
MacOSRoman encoding and converted it with bibutils. This worked =20
better than with unicode-encoding, but some characters dissapeared =20
and, mysteriously, the letter =E5 was reproduced as x. I guess I can =20
make the necessary replacements by hand in the entries where it is =20
required, but it would have been much easier if endnote 8 had a =20
global search and replace function.

And what is nice is that a Dutch word like strategie=EBn (strategies)=20
will be correctly hyphenated as strategie-en (without the trema on the=20=

last e). I don't know if other languages have such changes of=20
characters due to hyphenation, but probably there will be such=20
languages.
