Subject: [ANN] BibDesk-1.1.3
From: "Adam R. Maxwell"
Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 21:14:12 -0700

The BibDesk development team is pleased to announce that BibDesk =20
1.1.3 is available for download at . This release has a fairly long list of changes, particularly in =20
the "Bugs Fixed" department, and is recommended for all users. We've =20=

fixed at least one nasty crashing bug in 1.1.2, and hopefully more as =20=

well. Further, this release should be compatible with pre-10.3.9 OS =20
versions again, in spite of the shiny new Tiger features (Spotlight =20
and PDFKit).

If you find bugs, please report them using the tracker at , so we can get =20=

them fixed as soon as possible.

I forgot to mention in the official release notes that Spotlight =20
support won't be active until after you save a file. Other than =20
that, complete release notes follow:

Changes since 1.1.2

New Features
=95 Support for "starts with" and "ends with" in find/replace
=95 Status line shows number of replacements made
=95 Spotlight support added, such that individual items show up in =20=

Spotlight search results
=95 Implemented RFE #1238770; you can now set stop words for =20
sorting in preferences
=95 PDFKit is now used in the editor and LaTeX previews, so you get =20=

all of the zooming and selection goodness of Tiger
=95 Dissolve transitions added for editor drawer button
=95 Allow opening and revealing the local file from the main table =20=

using a contextual menu
=95 Recent items in editor button menus are now in submenus

Bugs Fixed
=95 Find/replace works only on full string components (between # =20
marks) when operating on macros
=95 Non-macro find/replace does not replace in macros
=95 Raw BibTeX value of strings is available from AppleScript
=95 Compiled with gcc-3.3, so we can run on < 10.3.9 and =20
(hopefully) 10.2.8
=95 Arrow button for crossrefs now changes when clicked
=95 Fix bug #1235265, field named "Key" returns same as "Cite Key"
=95 Changes in complex strings are now noted in the editor
=95 Use Core Graphics for the macro window shadow for Jaguar =20
compatibility
=95 Remove undo support from text import sheet, and only generate =20=

cite keys when adding ot the document
=95 Each text view (abstract/annote/rss) now has its own undo =20
manager, which fixes some crashing bugs
=95 Cache more images in main publications list
=95 Use locks more consistently, to avoid thread-related problems
=95 Fix bug # 1234857, Add undo for changing the publication type
=95 Fix bug # 1238509. The two possible messages were exchanged
=95 Status line displays properly after deleting pubs
=95 Removed some unnecessary updating, so the interface should feel =20=

faster
=95 Commands such as \LaTeX{} are no longer deleted from the RTF =20
preview
=95 We now sniff the pasteboard for RIS or BibTeX when using the =20
"Add publications from pasteboard" menu item
=95 Update checking thread now runs at lowest priority
=95 Fixed bug # 1232980. We don't try to move the file when it is =20=

not deletable (i.e. read-only or in a read-only directory).
=95 Added exception handlers for creating BibTeX strings
=95 Fix for bug #1243735, document marked dirty after switching to =20=

one of the text view tabs (annote/abstract/rss)
=95 Fix bug # 1221146, add a new option in the prefs to add a tilde =20=

before the cite command
=95 Fix bug #1244514, last field not added for RIS items
=95 Major rewrite of the RIS/PubMed parsing code to fix bugs and =20
improve efficiency
=95 Fix bug #1244625, URL characters shouldn't be escaped when =20
importing RIS
   =95 Undo/AppleScript now update the annote/abstract/rss fields of =20=

the editor properly
=95 File loading should be significantly faster, at least for =20
larger files
=95 Fixed occasional problems with Select All beeping
=95 Fixed some memory leaks in author code, improved efficiency
=95 Collapse whitespace in fields. Fixes bug #1199940, \n\t =20
converted to double whitespace
=95 TeX preview UI operations now take place on the main thread=

I can confirm that: when opening PDF files, GraphicConverter converts =20=

them to bitmaps, and if you use it to converting the PDF file to EPS =20
the resulting EPS will only contain a bitmap image. You specify the =20
resolution of the bitmap in Preferences > Opening > Formats > PDF, =20
and the default value is 72 dpi (with 32-bits color depth).

The same doesn't happen when opening EPS files: GraphicConverter =20
allows to choose, in references > Opening > Formats > PDF, the EPS =20
interpreter: Apple's pstopdf, GhostScript at /usr/local/bin/gs, =20
Classic MacGhostView, Classic EPStoPICT.

Regarding the trial period: it manifests itself through a time-out =20
splash screen. When you've used the software without registering for =20
less than one-month, say (I'm not sure about the exact threshold), =20
the time-out period is 10 s; then it becomes 30 s, and so forth.

Howdy,

One Question: Should I now remove the Spotlight BibImporter I had
manually placed in /Library/Spotlight/?

One Bug: I'm also getting a crash after using the Preview. This has
already been submitted and I just added a comment.

One Feature Request: Don't display the bibpreview.bib in the File-

I don't know :). If Spotlight is finding individual entries (like
Address Book or Mail), you don't have to remove it, but there's no
point in keeping it around, either.

Yeah, you and a few dozen other people :(. I think this is a bug
I've been trying to track down for months, and hopefully we can get
it fixed. Unfortunately, it never happens in the debugger.

Howdy,

I don't remember it happening before but maybe I'm remembering 10.3.9
rather than 10.4.2. I really think that pdf display in 10.4 is quite
a bit less stable than in 10.3.

Matter of fact there seem to be several things that are less stable
in Tiger. I was having lots of trouble with ManOpen (a nice front end
for man pages with hyperrefs, appropos, etc.) that was traced to a
few lines of html the author had used. When he changed that little
bit everything worked fine. Worked great before Tiger.

Good Luck,

Dear All,

having trouble running LaTeX commands on TextMate 1.1b15 on TL2005.
It used to work before I made the move TL2005 and/or TM was updated.
When I run the command LaTeX and view, I get:
Compiling LaTeX...

/bin/bash: line 33: pdflatex: command not found
Success
Error: PDF file not written to disk

I have the following shell variables set in TM's Preferences > Advanced:

BASH_ENV /etc/profile
SHLVL 1

MacroMates support asks if I have PDFLaTeX installed, and where. To
be honest: I don't know, but when I ask `which pdflatex' in terminal
I get:

no pdflatex in /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Mika.

Do you mean there's a new version of ManOpen coming? I'm also a =20
frequent user of ManOpen (both the stand-alone application, and the =20
command-line version openman), and I didn't see a new version on its =20
web page. Or do you mean a faulty man page has been fixed, not =20
ManOpen itself?

BTW, I've just realized it's fairly easy to add the relevant path for =20=

gwTeX to the manpath searched by ManOpen: go to Preferences > =20
General, click the Add... button, navigate to /Library/teTeX/man or =20
type / or Cmd-G to navigate to /usr/local/teTeX/man, click Open. =20
You're done.

It seems ManOpen doesn't use the new Tiger mechanism in which the =20
manpath is specified in /usr/share/misc/man.conf (fixed by i-=20
Installer at the time gwTeX is installed).

An unfortunate change is that ManOpen now declares all extensions .1 =20
to .9 as man pages, so that several of my files from years ago, with =20
names like "Chapitre 3.1", are seen by OS X as man pages whereas they =20=

are actually MacWrite II files.

You probably have forgotten to activate the CLI option ...

You can do this by configuring again the tex i-Package in i-Installer.=20=

i-Installer will then add some lines to files in /etc (/etc/profile for=20=

example) that /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current is=20
added to $PATH.
