Hi,

Apart from minor bug fixes and improvements, the new beta of LaTeXiT
1.3.2 should bring the ability to copy/paste from an application like
Keynote towards LaTeXiT. I say "should" but it does work. It's just
up to volunter beta testers to prove the contrary ;-)

I apologize for posting a test message, but I need to make sure a

I use BibTeX mode in Alphatk to manage my bibliography. It gives me a
pull-down template for everything. It's pretty easy. And it can convert
between BibTeX, Firstsearch, Inspec and Hollis formats. I have used it
both with the 8-bit BibTeX that comes with CMacTeX, and with the version
that comes with teTeX.

Gary,

Can you send me this said ealy version when you have time? I don't
have acrobat and couldn't justify the expense on it. I never felt that
I needed acrobat (can someone comment if there's something can be done
by acrobat only?)

Thanks. :-)

There a binary (from Ghostscript?) called (surprisingly) pdf2ps that
converts PDF to PS. You could then use ps2epsi to finish the job.
Have you tried doing this? It would be easy to write a script to do
this. In any event, I will send you some old versions of WARMFigToPDF
after I figure which ones to send.

The *EXPERIMENTAL* i-Directory contains an updated TeX i-Package for
testing (only the 2005 developer set has been updated and it contains a
fix for a Mac problem which needs to be tested)

It contains pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.30.0-rc2-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5)

Testing on Mac OS 10.2 *very* welcome.

Installs fine here (2005 Devel). Two remarks:

1. The problem connected with use of a pdftexconfig.tex containing =20
the deprecated command \pdfoptionpdfminorversion is still there =20
(yielding warnings in the TeX log console in TeXShop). There are such =20=

two files installed:

- one /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/config/=20
pdftexconfig.tex from 9 July 2004;

- another /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.gwtex/tex/generic/config/=20
pdftexconfig.tex from 10 March 2004, containing the deprecated =20
\pdfoptionpdfminorversion but taking precedence (given its location =20
inside texmf.gwtex).

There is no pdftexconfig.tex created inside texmf.local. If I =20
remember correctly what Herb Schulz said, for the 2004 install, a =20
copy is created there without \pdfoptionpdfminorversion.

2. For those using Adam Maxwell's DVIImporter.mdimporter, after a new =20=

TeX install the command "mdimport -f /usr/local/teTeX" needs to be re-=20=

run I suppose. In case the importer is planned to become a standard =20
part of the Mac OS X TeX install, would it be worth to include this =20
command at the end of the install stage?

Subject: Re: [OS X TeX] Fwd: [pdftex] using OpenType fonts in LaTeX
From: "Ingo Reich"
Date: Mon, 01 Aug 2005 03:11:51 -0700

Hi Jonas,

I never used this initexmf command (or an equivalent to it). It looks as if=
 this command were necessary to update the map-files in miktex ? so it's pr=
obably the equivalent to putting the map-files in the right folder and runn=
ing "sudo updmap" in the gwtex setup, but I really don't know. Maybe it's o=
f some help to describe what I did when I converted and installed my openty=
pe fonts:

1. First have a look at the otftotfm manual: http://www.lcdf.org/~eddietwo/=
type/otftotfm.1.html
There's actually all the information you need. There is an automatic option=
 "-a" mentioned which didn't work for me. But if you don't mind installing =
the fonts manually, do the following:

2. put all your opentype files into one folder, say "acaslon" (on the deskt=
op or whereever you want)=20

3. also put the file t1.enc in that folder

4. go to the terminal, change to that folder and run otftotfm on the files =
and with the options of your choice; if you're done, you find several .pfb,=
 .vf, .enc-files, and a file called lcdftools.map in this directory; rename=
 lcdftools.map to, say, acaslon.map. This map-file is absolutely crucial to=
 the use of type1-fonts, and if you have a look at the filecontents you wil=
l see that this file references the .enc-files mentioned above, i.e., these=
 are absolutely crucial, too.

5. Having generated the necessary files, you need to put them in the right =
places. I chose to put them in the texmf-folder in my personal library fold=
er, which is in your case probably something like /jonas/library/texmf/

your .pfb files go to /jonas/library/texmf/fonts/type1/lcdftools/acaslon/
your .vf files go to /jonas/library/texmf/fonts/vf/lcdftools/acaslon/
your .tfm files go to /jonas/library/texmf/fonts/tfm/lcdftools/acaslon/
your .enc files go to /jonas/library/texmf/fonts/enc/lcdftools/
your acaslon.map file goes to /jonas/library/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/lcdftool=
s/

6. you need to make tex aware of your new map-file, so put the line=20
Map acaslon.map # Adobe Caslon Pro
in the file updmap.cfg (which is in the system's library folder in /library=
/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/)

7. run "sudo updmap" in the Terminal (this then automatically updates all t=
he files relevant for dvips, pdftex etc.)

8. Now for using the font in latex you still have to write the necessary .f=
d-files (always named according to the scheme FontencodingFontfamily.fd), a=
 style-file, and a testfile. An .fd file I wrote for use with Adobe Caslon =
you can see below (this one is for hanging figures; you probably named the =
files differently, i.e. you need to change everything accordingly):

The stylefile I use is the following one:

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% acaslon.sty %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e}
\ProvidesPackage{acaslon}[2005/14/02 v1.0 Adobe Caslon Pro]
\RequirePackage{textcomp}
\RequirePackage{nfssext}

\DeclareOption{lining}{\renewcommand*{\rmdefault}{acaslon}}
\renewcommand{\textos}[1]{{\fontfamily{acaslonj}\selectfont #1}}
\renewcommand{\textln}[1]{{\fontfamily{acaslon}\selectfont #1}}

\DeclareOption{bold}{\renewcommand*{\bfdefault}{bx}}
\ExecuteOptions{oldstyle,medium}
\ExecuteOptions{oldstyle}
\ProcessOptions*
\endinput
%%%%%%%%%%%% end of file %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

nfssext.sty is a stylefile mentioned in the fontinstallationguide; whith th=
e stylefile above, however, it is strictly speaking not necessary to load n=
fssext.sty, since font selection commands like \textos are redefined in the=
 stylefile itself.

9. Put all these files in the directory /jonas/library/texmf/tex/latex/font=
s/lcdftools/acaslon/
then you should be able to run a testfile like the following (the option sc=
ale allows you to scale the font; this is especially nice in case of sans s=
erif fonts to match the x-height of the serif font):

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\documentclass[11pt]{article}
\usepackage[applemac]{inputenc}
\usepackage[german]{babel}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[scale=3D1,medium]{acaslon}

Hello Gerben!

Some little things:

	Cannot read /usr/share/misc/man.conf file. You are probably not=20=

running Mac OS X 10.3. Man path not set.

Panther does not use that configuration file.

The section on LM fonts in that introduction in i-Installer needs to be=20=

overworked. There is one obvious mistake: "9 Bourgouis," but I think=20
the section needs an update to the recent state of LM fonts too. I=20

Howdy,

It was an install of the latest non-experimental version of gwTeX. I
think it may have been generated from the one in texmf.tetex because
I use letter paper rather than the default a4 paper.

I could either:
1. Add the importer and run it when on 10.4. Adam?
2. Check for 10.4 and the availability of the importer and 10.4 and then
run it.

2 has the disadvantage that you need to rerun the configure phase if you
install the importer after TeX. 1 has the disadvantage that I become
dependent on Adam. Unless Adam creates an i-Package for the importer of
course.

I'll go for 2 if someone tells me how I can find out if the DVI-importer
is installed.

There is no problem, just the message is confusing. 10.2 10.3 and 10.4 al=
l
have different ways of setting the man path. The script reports that the
10.4 file is not found (but when on 10.3 it will still happily apply the
correct fix to the right file there)

The message is wrong. It should say 10.4.

Work, not vacation next week. Anyway. I am hoping for a real update to LM
with OpenType versions that work on the Mac. That would mean I do not hav=

to convert anymore.

I think XeTeX does not have a GPG signature. Maybe i-Installer is not
particularly friendly in handling a missing GPG signature?

I should look into that too.

Howdy,

I believe it would be installed in /Library/Spotlight/.

I'm not sure if it can be installed in ~/Library/Spotlight/ which is
kind of a strange place to put something that has a global
consequence to the system.

A couple of questions:

I haven't installed it yet but I have installed the BibTeX importer.
Given that the next version of BibDesk will have that built-in will
there be a conflict with the one in /Library/Spotlight/?

I'm not sure I have the latest version of the DVI importer. Where can
I find the latest, greatest version of the DVI importer. I assume it
is stable; I've had enough problems under Tiger already.

There used to be a bug in Tiger which made it behave wrongly if there =20=

were two Spotlight importers claiming the same UTI on the same setup. =20=

I don't know whether it's been fixed in 10.4.2.

Adam said in a thread "[OS X TeX] What happened to the BibTeX =20
SpotLight importer" on 20 July that he hoped the importer to make it =20
to the MacTeXToolbox site , =20
but it doesn't seem to be there already.

Getting OT for a change: last night after a look at cnet's news.com I =20=

strolled through Paul Thurrott's site, looking at:

- His April review of OS X Tiger .

- His July review of Windows Vista Beta .

Found it interesting to read the point of view of a Windows =20

Windows Vista.

Howdy,

Thank you. I've downloaded the DVI importer.

I got the BibTeX importer when Adam first mentioned its existence and =20=

it has been stable.

It would be nice if I could start to type the name of a package and

Or like BibDesk does with the main publication list and the macros
list?  :).

It's on my list of things to do, along with drag-and-drop support for
URLs.

You're welcome, and thanks for the kind words! I think a friend of
mine switched to a Mac a couple of years ago after I showed him
iTeXMac and BibDesk; we'd tried setting up TeX on Windows, but it was
not pleasant after being spoiled by i-Installer and gwTeX!

I keep forgetting to check on this. Oops.

It will be there in the next day or two, hopefully; I just have to =20
get Sourceforge to set up the CVS repository.

Source and binary will be available on the mactextoolbox project
soon. BTW, I fixed a path buffer overflow in dvi2tty that you might
be interested in.

I wouldn't be opposed to creating an i-Package for it; I prefer drag-
and-drop install when possible, but that would insulate the user from
using Terminal to run mdimport as root.

mdimport -L is the only way I know of.

Another option is pdftops from the xpdf suite, with options '-eps'
and '-paper match' but I don't know whether there exists a
conveniently packaged version of the xpdf suite.

What's wrong with using GraphicConverter for these transformations. It
is far
less expensive than buying Acrobat for this purpose.

Ah, thanks. Almost forgot the old friend, GraphicConverter. Will try
it out later.

I seem to be not able to find it in 10.4 ... I remember it's included
in the 10.2 OS, though.

Subject: Thank You
From: "Curtis Clifton"
Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 18:44:28 -0500

I wanted to publicly thank Gerben for all his work on i-Installer and
the TeX distribution, and Michael, Adam, Christiaan, and the rest of
the BibDesk team for their excellent tool. I will graduate this
Saturday and relied heavily on their work in completing my
dissertation. I acknowledge them in the document, but seeing as no one
is likely to read that ;-) I wanted to also acknowledge them here.

Thank you, gentlemen!

With warm regards,

Curt
