I am using BibDesk v. 1.1.2 with a latex installation using Gerben =
Wierda's
i-installer. When I choose Preview, the window opens, but it is empty. Any
ideas what might be wrong? Latex is working properly.

Thanks.

Subject: installing ifmath fonts?
From: "Gary L. Gray"
Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2005 21:29:54 -0400

I purchased the ifmath fonts today (I think they will work nicely
with Keynote and LaTeXiT) and installed them in my local tetex tree.
Everything seems to be working, but I would like to describe how and
where I installed them with the hope that someone more knowledgeable
about fonts will tell me if I got things close to right.

The files:

ifb.afm ifex10.afm ifo.afm ifsy10.afm
ifbo.afm ifmi10.afm ifrg.afm

were put in:

~/Library/texmf/fonts/afm/ifmath

----------
The files:

cm.enc mv.enc

were put in:

~/Library/texmf/fonts/enc

---------
The file:

iffonts.map

was put in:

~/Library/texmf/fonts/map/ifmath/

----------
The files:

ifbo10cm.tfm ifbxsl10.tfm ifmi10.tfm ifrb10cm.tfm
ifro10cm.tfm
ifsy10.tfm ifbx10.tfm ifex10.tfm ifr10.tfm
ifrm10cm.tfm
ifsl10.tfm

were put in:

~/Library/texmf/fonts/tfm/ifmath/

----------
The files:

ifb.pfb ifex10.pfb ifo.pfb ifsy10.pfb
ifbo.pfb ifmi10.pfb ifrg.pfb

were put in:

~/Library/texmf/fonts/type1/ifmath/

-------------------
Finally, the files:

iffonts.cfg lv1ifri.fd lv1iptt.fd lvsienc.def
lvsiifsy.fd
omsifr.fd infomath.sty lv1ifrp.fd lvlienc.def
lvsiifr.fd
lvxiifex.fd omsifsy.fd lv1enc.def lv1iftt.fd
lvliifm.fd
lvsiifri.fd omlifm.fd omxifex.fd lv1ifr.fd
lv1iitt.fd
lvliifr.fd lvsiifrp.fd omlifr.fd ot1ifr.fd

were put in:

~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/ifmath/

-----------
I then ran:

sudo texhash

and the ran:

sudo updmap --enable Map iffonts.map

Does this all make sense? Is this what I was supposed to do?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the valuable information. I never knew the existence of
these fonts. I will look into the free option of the sansmath.sty ...
don't have money for the ifmath, although it looks cute and seems to
match the "Chalkboard" font of the blackboard theme.

Based on William Adam's suggestion, I bought and installed the
Informal Math fonts earlier today. I must say that they look great
with Keynote's Blackboard theme.

Almost. There is the tradition with a vendor folder but the search =20

That sounds great. :-)

Gary, did you purchase the "ifmath font for non-VTEX users" version?
Also, can you send me a slide (or several slides) with this new fonts
working with the Blackboard theme? I am sure other people would be
interested too ...

I know absolutely nothing about font installation. But I was wondering
why there's no "installer" that automatically put every bit and piece
into the right place? ... ... ...

Yes, I did purchase the non-VTEX users version (email delivery). They
showed up in my In box in about an hour.

Great idea regarding the sample slide(s)! I will put something
together later tonight or tomorrow and post it on the web for download.

Good question. Also, their website only mentions compatibility with =20
Windows. There is no problem installing these on OS X?

No problem here. The instructions I posted previously will work,
though Morten set me straight on a few of my paths. :-)

These fonts are really cool. I have always liked Tekton and now I can
use it with TeX (with all the math I need)!

Mm ... now a poor student's imagination (and humble wish) ...

Can someone suggest (and comment) a good way to convert the "real"
hand writing mathematical formula into some sort of form that Keynote
accept and is easy to manipulate? By "good", I mean, budget-wise and
time-wise ... The default LaTeX font is great, just too elegant for
the blackboard theme.

Thanks. :-)

I know almost nothing, but I was able to get them installed and
working in a few minutes (again, see the instructions in my previous

As for the installer, I couldn't tell you. Of course Micropress is a
Windows-centric company, so any installer would inevitably be Windows

When I was a (poor) grad student, I would often email software
companies asking for a discount for a kind soul. Some have official
policies and some just want to be nice. It wouldn't hurt to ask
Micropress if they will cut their price for you. Maybe their $100
price can be cut in half. :-)

Good luck,

I would say that the problems that person was experiencing are install
problems. AFAIK, if fonts are standard type 1 fonts, they should be
platform independent. That's the whole point of being type 1 fonts.
In fact I made a backup of my ~Library/texmf directory and unpacked it
on a Sun Solaris system and everything, including the fonts just
worked.

He does say that he bought their vtex fonts, which could be the =20
source of his problems. I can say that I have yet to see any trouble, =20=

though I haven't done a ton with it.

Here is a silly little file I created earlier this evening while =20
messing around with the font:

http://www.esm.psu.edu/faculty/gray/misc/ifmath-font-test.pdf

The preamble used to create this file was simply:

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{exscale}
\usepackage{infomath}

I hope this helps.

These problems seemed to occur because the poster used the fonts with =20=

a "traditional" Unix-flavored TeX install, ie using a DVI-based =20
viewer such as xdvi or macdvix. I wouldn't expect the same problems =20
with gwTeX and TeXShop, LaTeXiT, etc.

I haven't finished yet ... There were a few tries before, but obviously
only a few folks do that. Usually the fonts that come with teTeX are
sufficient. And those who want extras only need to follow an easy
recipe, as Gary did.) (There are some complications with naming the
fonts according to their encoding, shape/variant, so there can't be an
algorithm. Without it software is no solution.)

(My own installer is aiming to convert TrueType fonts to PostScript
fonts and make them via fontinst available to non-pdfTeX too. It's
command line, but a GUI to the Perl script to fill in new fonts and
name would be nice. And next summer/autumn the same for OpenType?)

Thank you very much... Sometimes the obvious is the thing that one misses.
The path to pdflatex was fine (it was symlinked to pdfetex) but I did not
select the references to preview. I thought it would generate the preview
for the entire set of references. That was my problem.

Thanks very much for your suggestion.

I'd like to see that too. I just played with the Chalkboard Theme a
bit in Keynote 2 and it does look promising. Now I've got to figure
out how to lock an image (e.g., a equation from LaTeXiT) to the

Please note that sansmath.sty is intended to get one a quick / dirty
sans serif typesetting of equations --- you should either be able to
rework it, (or maybe just do
\renewcommand{\sfdefault}{whatever-your-comic-sans-fontname-prefix-is-

I believe if you load Euler --- \usepackage{eulervm} and sansmath, then
change sfdefault and use \mathversion{sans} I think it is, you should
get a fairly decent result (letters and numbers will come from Comic
Sans, symbols &c. will come from Euler w/ is dark enough, and
hand-writing-like enough to not be so jarring as Computer Modern would
be).

Gary, glad to hear you enjoyed ifmath.

Howdy,

Now that Gary Gray has gotten me excited about using Keynote 2 with
LaTeXiT (and the LinkBack Plugin) I'm starting to think about putting
together a talk about relativity for my astronomy club. Yes, I'll
addd a few equations (hey, it has to be relevant to TeX!) but I'd
like to back up the equations with some animated graphs (i.e., ones
that start out with an empty piece of graph paper and then slowly
fill in the function) since that would help visualize what the
equation is telling the audience. Does anyone know of a nice way to
produce animated graphs? Preferably freeware!

Once I used a slightly different effect in Keynote 1: showing a =20
scatter plot of experimental data points, and then adding on top of =20
it a theoretical curve (or fit, for that matter).

This was done simply by using transitions in Keynote itself: having =20
the two plots (scatter plot, without and with the theoretical curve) =20
in two slides at exactly the same position, and using the Dissolve =20
transition between the slides.

I haven't used Keynote 2 much since getting it, but with its added =20
functionalities I imagine things could be even simpler: setting maybe =20=

a transition for the plot object itself, without needing to use 2 =20
different slides.

Is such a thing possible?? In particular, I would like to have PDF
equations "attached" to bulleted text in a list, and have the list
build in "by bullet". Right now, I see no way to place an equation
image in-line with bulleted text and have it build in correctly -- the
equations show up either before or after all the bullet points in the
list. Is what I'm after possible?

I threw together a pair of slides this morning using the Blackboard
theme in Keynote and the Informal Math Font for everything except the
title of each slide. LaTeXiT was used to generate the content for
each slide. The added a drop shadow to everything on the second
slide, just to see what it looks like (I kinda like it).

You can grab it at:

http://www.esm.psu.edu/faculty/gray/misc/InformalMath-
BlackboardTest.key.zip

I am sure that the look can be tweaked to look better (maybe typeset
everything in a smaller size in LaTeXiT and then scale it up in
Keynote so that the lines are a little heavier), but I do like it as is.

I build everything except the slide title in LaTeX (via LaTeXiT), so
I can integrate equations in bulleted lists without any trouble. You
will see this in the sample slides I posted (they don't contain
bulleted lists, but I can readily add a slide with one).

How do you proceed to edit back the slide content in LaTeXiT? Does it =20=

require the Keynote LinkBack plugin? The LaTeXiT help seems to imply so.

I hadn't tried such things before in OS X. With your slide I just =20

I think that with the latest version of LaTeXiT, you should be able
to re-edit the PDF I dragged to Keynote back in LaTeXiT. I am not

Can't you use Grapher, which ships with 10.4 (assuming you are

Hmm. At the risk of asking you to do more work, I for one would be
interested in seeing such a slide. I tend to use Keynote schemes that
were given away to .Mac account holders some time back (such as
"Frames" or "Basic
Research" ,
with the text/math customized to Palatino or Utopia), and these use
custom bullets. I'd like to retain these bullets and the ability to
use the powerful build tools of Keynote to control how information
appears on the screen, but imbed in-line equations into these bullet
items. I have a feeling that I am asking too much of the current
technology.... Thanks for any pointers or suggestions.

Your mailer (which according to the full headers is Mozilla 1.7.7) =20
must have introduced a line break in the middle of the address, =20
yielding the space above (between "...Math-" and "Blackboard..."). =20
Remove the space, things should work.

Generally I've noticed mailers play nice with adresses that are =20
included between <>, as in , though it's a rule of thumb and =20=

I didn't see this documented anywhere.

This is true. I generally include the angle brackets around URLs. The =20=

problem is that the digest, when posted on the web, hides anything =20
between angle brackets. :-( Therefore, I leave them out if the URL is =20=

reasonably short (shorter than about 80 characters).

Mathematica (*far* from freeware), in conjunction with Graphic

Removing the space didn't do it =85 because there were two spaces.

What I got this time was a folder with two "InformalMath" files which=20
didn't do anything for me. This does not surprise me since I run just=20

It is interesting how the drop shadows on the second slide look really
nice in the Keynote 2 file (which I had no issues downloading), but
look, well, weird in the PDF file noted above when viewed in Preview on

It must be a Tiger vs. Panther issue since my eye can't discern a

Thanks for the PDF (I don't have keynote yet). The math font does
indeed look nice with the text font.
