Subject: WARMFigToPDF 4.0.5 & new MO plug-in for CS2
From: "Gary L. Gray"

Due to a change in AppleScript in Tiger, if the file default.tex did
not exist in:

~/Library/Application Support/WARMFigToPDF/Preambles/

WARMFigToPDF would return an AppleScript error. This didn't affect
many people since most of you who use WARMFigToPDF were running it
before installing Tiger. With this in mind, we have updated
WARMFigToPDF to version 4.0.5 to correct this problem. I suspect that
version 4.0.5 will also work under Panther, but I have kept 4.0.4 on
the WARMFigToPDF web site just in case it doesn't.

In addition, I have posted a new version of the MO plug-in for those
of you running Adobe Illustrator CS2.

You can find the WARMFigToPDF 4.0.5, the source code for WARMFigToPDF
4.0.5, and the new MO plug-in for AI CS2 on the WARMFigToPDF web site
at:

http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/WFTPDF/

If you are wondering "What the heck is WARMFigToPDF and what is a MO
plug-in!?!?" -- you can find that on the WARMFigToPDF web site too. :-)

Just a couple of announcements, taken from today's issue of ADC News:

- There is now a dedicated LyX/Mac page at the Unix section of
Apple's site:

- The LyX/Mac wiki has now a dedicated section on using XeTeX with LyX:

- The "Recently Added" section of Apple's LyX/Mac page mentions a
tool which may be of interest to some people here (I think the issue
was discussed in an OT thread some time ago): an emlx-to-mbox
converter, for converting from Tiger new .emlx mail format to the
standard Unix and pre-Tiger .mbox mail format. I wish I had known
about it before upgrading my Jaguar PowerMac to Tiger, just for the
sake of being able to read on it the mail living usually on my Tiger
PowerBook. That's at:

Well, at least it runs here without any complaints in Console -- but
since I never believed a creative suite could improve my original
creativeness by giving me a bohemian's purse I can't check more ...

Subject: Re: [OS X TeX] LaTeXiT 1.3.1 and Nisus (LinkBack)
From: "Pierre Chatelier"
Date: Tue, 26 Jul 2005 11:59:56 +0200

Hello,

I did not move this thread to MacOS Tex Toolbox mailing list, because
I now need some users opinion, about a problem, regardless of
technical details, even if there will be a few.
But first of all, here is an updated version of LaTeXiT 1.3.1 beta :

http://ktd.club.fr/programmation/fichiers/LaTeXiT-1_3_1.dmg
http://ktd.club.fr/programmation/fichiers/LaTeXiT-panther-1_3_1.dmg
http://ktd.club.fr/programmation/fichiers/LaTeXiT-source-1_3_1.dmg

What's new ?
-you can load/save libraries by drag'n drop or double-click, and
they now have a particular icon.
-you can show/hide the preamble using the "Latex" menu. Useful for
people that do not read the doc ;-)
-if the service fails, you will be prompted by an alert panel.
-Linkback should now work when using the LaTeXiT's service (but
read below to see the limitation)

>>> I've been playing with LaTeXiT 1.3.1 and Nisus Express 2.5b1
>>> using LaTeXit via Services [snip] but I don't get any LinkBack.
[snip]
>> it seems that Linkback is not taken in account by the way
>> application service works.

I have contacted Nisus developers to ask them, and I was wrong :
Linkback does work well with the application service. So what's the
problem ? The problem is that to tune an equation's baseline,
LaTeXiT's application service does not send back an image, but an
RTFD stream, in which the baseline can be tuned. But it appears that
in text editors, it is very difficult to "extract" the image from the
stream, so that Linkback is there, but "unreachable" in the RTFD
object. But it is the responsibility of the text editor to do that.
NWE guys told me that they will work on that, but it will finally
depend on the text editor.
So what could I do ?
Well, I found a compromise : If you use the feature of automatically
tuning the baseline (it is a checkbox in LaTeXiT's service
preferences), then LinkBack MAY not work (depending on the text
editor). However, if you disable that feature, then the application
service won't send RTFD but a simple image, so that LinkBack SHOULD
work. But you will have to change the baseline yourself.

Any comments/feedbacks about that ? Do you think it is a reasonable
choice ? Would you see another solution (for technical discussion,
you can just post on the Tex ToolBox mailing list) ?

Regards,

Pierre

Howdy,

Thanks much. I know that LinkBack is still very young so it's nice to
get involved at this stage. I have to admit that I'm waiting for a
Pages plugin although the latest Nisus Express 2.5 beta is much
improved. I usually use LaTeX or XeLaTeX (if I need a special text
font - like Zapfino, Variation=3D2, for a recent invitation I put
together for my wife) but for some things that feel better working at
the visual, rather than analytic level, like one off news letters, I
think Pages might fill the bill for me. In any case I never know
where I'll need to use maths so having LaTeXiT + LinkBack + Pages for
those occasions will be wonderful. I still use LaTeXiT mostly for
text and maths to be placed in graphics made in Create and there the
baseline is of no concern for me.

Thanks again for the effort you have been putting into LaTeXiT to
make it useful in many ways to many folks.

Good Luck,

Herb Schulz

Subject: (OT) Tiger and not Tigrrrr :-)?
From: "Herbert Schulz"

Howdy,

I have had a continuing battle with instabilities in Tiger.
Occasionally the OS would spike CPU usage to 70-90% and a user
process would not be able to respond to signals; this would show up
as a ``xxxxx not responding'' message in Activity Monitor (I never
needed to look in Activity Monitor and Console in any other version
of OS X). E.g., once in a while when I would try to put my system to
sleep the loginwindow process would take a very long time to come up
and display the dialog box.

I put 10.4 on my system using Archive & Install and believe(d) that I
had been very careful about putting things I needed back into my
system from the Previous Systems folder. I completely re-downloaded
and installed TeX, etc., etc., (see, I guess there is some vague
connection to the topic) and the few extras I knew were ok (Macaroni,
CocoAspell (latest version)). But that problem persisted.

I knew that Virex 7.x (I had used v7.2 downloaded from my .Mac
account and never updated to 7.5 because of reported problems with
Panther) was a problem with Tiger but felt that the Archive & Install
should have removed all the harmful things from the /System/ and /
Library/ folders. Remember... I was careful about what I restored
from the Previous Systems folder.

Seeing , I
downloaded the un-installer (destaller?) and ran it; the script is a
series of `rm -fr` commands run as root to delete all traces of the
given version of Virex.

Lo and behold, I haven't seen the problem for almost two weeks now
when I was almost sure to see it about every other day before.

My advice is to definitely delete all traces of Virex using the un-
installers mentioned above if you EVER had Virex on your system. Now
I call OS X 10.4 Tiger rather than Tigerrrr or Tigrrrr.

Post Script: Now I'm sure that five minutes after sending this email
my system will totally freeze to show its contempt for me! Just
waited 5 minutes and all is still well. Maybe I'm still a bit paranoid.

Good Luck,

Herb Schulz
