Under what circumstances did you see this message? I haven't seen
it, but I've done almost no testing with Panther, since I have to
reboot into Tiger to recompile after making any changes to the code.

Hmmm...I haven't the faintest idea what MSL.framework is. TCOBrowser
certainly isn't linked to it, but apparently it's bundled with some
application that you have. My guess is that you have some browser
plugin trying to load the PDF, and the webview doesn't work with it?
Oh, I just saw your note below, and it appears that this is correct ;).

You should be able to control-click and save the linked file (at
least, that worked last time I tried it). I just single-clicked the
fonteinf.pdf file in the web drawer on Tiger, and it loaded right
into the drawer, which is a feature that I didn't even know about!
Looks like I need some kind of magnification feature in the drawer
now...

Sorry about that, but I'm just not sure what to tell you. If you
have Interface Builder, try opening up TCOBrowser's MainWindow.nib,
double-click on the "web drawer" view, select the WebView and hit cmd-
shift-i to get info on it, then uncheck "Enable plug-ins" and see how
it goes. If that doesn't make sense, I can send you a build with
that done.

Adam

This happened when I first launched TCOBrowser 0.84 and the README
opened too. I can reproduce it now ...

It could be related to /Library/Internet\
Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin, since Safari has this symlink Adobe
Reader 7.

Of course this works too for me!

Single- or double-click lead to the same: TCOBrowser tries to use the
PDF plug-in, which fails. Then it remembers that it could use an
external application as good, but it fails to use Adobe Reader 7, the
only application left to choose.

This seems to be a routine that comes in when the first attempt to load
a plug-in fails. So it asks the user to choose an external application.

To me the way how to deal with InterfaceBuilder and MainWindow.nib
looks a bit different: four windows (MainWindow.nib, TCOBrowser, search
field, and Cocoa-Windows) open. When I double-click on Drawer in
Cocoa-Windows nothing happens. When I select that field and press
Cmd-Shift-i a new window opens, NSWindow Info.

When I step through Cocoa-Windows' tools bar and come to the Cocoa
Graphics View, I see four large logos: Safari, OpenGL, Finder, and
QuickTime. Letting the cursor hover over Safari a tool tip "WebView"
appears. Single- or double-clicking does not do anything, Cmd-Shift-i
brings me back to the dead end street I mentioned before.

In MainWindow.nib an item "webDrawer" is shown. When I double-click it
a new window NSDrawer Class Info opens, probably again in dead end
street. webDrawer in same window is my next choice: on Cmd-Shift-i an
NSDrawer Info window opens, but no "Enable plug-ins" visible.

It seems that I can't do the job based on your How-To ...

I removed the Adobe PDF Plugin folder and the AdobePDFViewer.plugin
file from the Internet Plug-Ins -- and it works brilliantly, using
Schubert IT's PDF Browser Plugin!

This is one more reminder that Adobe is providing only bad services ...

I don't see it here, but I'll check into it.

I'm using a really basic web view, so I've no idea what's wrong here.

Well, it was a lame how-to, but this last try was almost correct.
Sorry, I forget how confusing IB is if you're not used to the thing.
In MainWindow.nib, you should see a gray square with "View" on it,
and below that it says "Web drawer". Double-click that to open the
drawer's content view, and single-click on the gray "WebView1" that
appears. Use cmd-shift-i to get info, then choose "Attributes" from
the inspector panel. You should have a checkbox then for "Enable
plug-ins".

It's precisely for this reason that I hate Adobe Acrobat/Reader, and =20
more generally that I am suspicious towards Adobe software: they have =20=

a tendency to want to take over your computer, replacing built-in OS =20
mechanisms by their own mechanisms upon install, without asking you =20
first whether you agree. Unfortunately I have to use Acrobat for work.

Last week I updated Office v. X to 2004, Illustrator 10 to CS2, and =20
Acrobat Pro 5 to 7. Then I noticed some things didn't work as =20
expected, and went looking at the logs:

- ~/Library/Receipts/com.adobe.distiller/install.log indicates =20
Acrobat installed PDFMaker components inside the Office directory.

- ~/Library/Receipts/com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro/install.log indicates =20
Acrobat installed not only an AdobePDFViewer component inside /=20
Library/Internet Plug-Ins/, but also frameworks *inside the Safari =20
application itself* at /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Frameworks/, =20=

and also a CUPS printer at /usr/libexec/cups/backend/pdf700.

The PDFMaker and PDFViewer component can be removed afterwards, but =20
the modification to the Safari application seems highly "unethical": =20
how can one application be allowed to modify another application on =20
its own initiative, without asking the administrator first?

Regarding the PDFMaker and PDFViewer, if one wants to keep them in =20
place but simply disactivate them, the built-in mechanisms for doing =20
so don't seem to work:

- The installation of AdobePDFViewer results in Safari using this =20
Adobe plugin to display PDF files, instead of using the PDF viewing =20
ability built in Tiger (or the Schubert It plugin on Jaguar and =20
Panther). In Acrobat (and Reader as well), there is a checkbox =20
"Display PDF in browser using: Adobe Reader 7.0" in Preferences/=20
Internet, but the preference doesn't seem to stick: the checkbox is =20
re-checked automatically every time Acrobat/Reader is used to view a =20
PDF file.

- Similarly, the installation of the PDFMaker components results in a =20=

new PDFMaker toolbar to be added to Word, eating screen estate. In =20
the Personalize Toolbar window in Word, there is indeed a new =20
checkbox "Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker", but again the preference doesn't =20
stick: the checkbox is re-checked automatically each time Word is =20
restarted.

The fact this happens in both cases seems to indicate this is not a =20
bug but, rather, a deliberate imperialistic behaviour from Acrobat.

I remember Maarten Sneep some time ago wrote a post explaining in =20
detail how to get rid once and for good of the AdobePDFViewer plugin, =20=

I'll look for it. I had managed recently (I don't remember exactly =20
how) to reinstall Adobe Reader 7 from its installer without =20
installing the PDFViewer plugin; but alas a couple of weeks later =20
when installing the 7.0.2 update the PDFViewer was added =20
automatically by the updater -:(

Howdy,

I've refrained from updating Adobe Reader 7 to the latest version for
fear of going through this again. I think I set the preferences in
Reader (you may have to do this in both Reader and Acrobat) not to
use the plugin, quit each program and THEN deleted the plugin. I left
the framework installed by Reader in Safari although I was really
angry that Adobe would do that; it seems to do no harm. I'm back to
using the Shubert PDF plugin in Safari; I only miss scrolling using
the scroll wheel on my mouse.

I've actually been using the Camino browser more and more. It's
missing some features and has a few bugs but I like its interface.
The latest nightlies have been very stable on my system.

Good Luck,

Subject: hyperref
From: "Armin Goralczyk"
Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2005 17:36:27 +0200

Hi
I decided to use the hyperref package, but I ran into some troubles.
Any help is much appreciated since I cannot figure it out myself.
When I use hyperref with all the other packages I need it doesn't
build a tree-like bookmark structure but appends the next entry to
the previous one no matter if the next is a chapter and the previous
is a subsection, like this:
|_ Chapter 1
  \_ Section
   \_Section
    \_ Subsection
     \_ Chapter 2
      \_section
       \_section
If I omit all other packages but hyperref the bookmarks are ordered
correct, like this:
|_ Chapter 1
|\_Section
|\_section
| \_Subsection
\_Chapter 2
  \_section
   \_section

My preamble and minimal example for non-tree like structure looks
like this:

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{book}

\usepackage[font=3Dfootnotesize,labelfont=3Dbf]{caption}
\usepackage{subfig}
\usepackage{array,fancyhdr}
\usepackage{threeparttable}
\usepackage{multirow}
\usepackage{booktabs}
\usepackage{cite}
\usepackage{paralist}
\usepackage[smaller]{acronym}
\usepackage{relsize}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{multicol}
\usepackage{sidecap,xspace}
\usepackage[twoside,varioref,closeFloats]{fltpage}
\usepackage{amsmath,amscd}
\usepackage{textcomp}
\usepackage[OT1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{hyperref}

\newcommand\test{sample text for test. repeated over and over until the
end. }

\section{and testing}
\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test\test
\end{document}

And in the log file (not complete) it says:
\openout3 =3D `testhyperref.out'.

As mentioned above, if I omit all other packages things work out fine
and no hyperref package warning in the log.
Is there some conflict between hyperref and some other package?
Thanks for help.

Howdy,

After downloading the fltpage package the demonstration file compiled
fine on my system; no errors from hyperref. I added a Table of
Contents and that is being displayed properly on my system. Note that
the default margins in the book class are assymetric between even and
odd pages; could that be what you were seeing?

How old is your TeX system? Do you have the i-installer version (gwTeX)?

Subject: New Modified Pdftricks Package
From: "Herbert Schulz"
Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2005 12:09:10 -0500

Howdy,

I just uploaded a new version of my modified pdftricks.sty package.
Besides all the previous changes to the processing steps for the
figure files (to get the Boundingbox correct) and setting the default
font size (along with options to change that) I've added two new
options.

One allows you to set the document class for the figure files. This
will be handy for forcing the use of font sizes not normally
available in the default `article' class. The second allows you to
set the fonts size to any value that is ``legal'' for a given
document class. These are set using the ``standard'' key=3Dvalue
method. E.g.

\usepackage[docclass=3Dmemoir,ptsize=3D9pt]{pdftricks}

will put the first line

\documentclass[9pt]{memoir}

in each of the generated figure files. The default values (no
`=3Dvalue' given) are `article' and `10pt' respectively. The older 10,
11 and 12 options for forced point sizes are still available but are
deprecated.

As usual, please let me know of any problems.

Oh, yeah... grab the modified pdftricks as the file NewPdftricks.zip
on my download site .

Good Luck,

Sorry for the rash of announcements recently, but a few key features
have been causing problems. This release should fix the local
documentation opening bug pointed out by Herb Schulz (double-clicking
the local-doc icons didn't work), and hopefully work around the
problem with Adobe's PDF plugin.

I've also added some minor features as well, and the Spotlight search
should be more useful. Download from .

Changes in this release:

- Cleaned up some of the catalogue reading code
- Now use a combo box for setting the CTAN mirror, so you can enter
your own
- Added tooltips for some of the help items
- Fixed local documentation opening
- Disable plug-ins and Javascript support for the web drawer
- Add more information to the metadata store (author and date)

That's unbelievable; an InputManager or one of the other runtime
hacks seems less dirty than actually modifying an application's
bundle like this. My original reason for dumping Acrobat was the
Windows-style toolbar across my entire display, but I now feel even
more justified in keeping my system Adobe-free, possible thanks to
Preview, Create and TIFFany3 ;).

Still using OmniWeb here, since Safari's brushed metal and font
coloring give me eyestrain (and OW has regex ad blocking and a few
dozen other features).

Have you tried a recent nightly of Camino? It's Gecko (Sp?) based but
with a Cocoa interface (unlike Firefox). No brushed metal! Try an
official nightly or even an unofficial optimized (for different
processors) nightly. There is popup blocking that seems quite
effective and ad blocking via css that also seems pretty nice. It's
biggest problem right now is that typing in text boxes is a bit
`flashy' and slow and there is no spell checking in text boxes; both
are being actively worked on at the moment but it's a small group of
volunteers doing this project.

I like to push Camino because it's a very nice Browser done as Open
Source.

A couple of years ago, I was regularly building Camino (then called
Chimera) from source, since nightlies weren't available, and found it
to be an excellent browser: fast and lightweight. I just pulled the
latest nightly, and it looks like it's come a long way since then in
terms of UI; very nice.

I used a long time Shiira, but honestly, the best is OmniWeb: I see so
many sites with large grey areas of sh...pam a(i)ds!

I didn't use the nightly builds yet, but I suppose they too don't give
much ad blocking.

Howdy,

There is an preference in the latest nightly builds that installs an
ad blocking css (not perfect but still very nice). You've got to re-
start Camino but then it just works.

Maybe we aught to stop on this very OT topic for now before we get
reprimanded!:-)

A control-click to save is the workaround for now, or else set your
prefs to open in the web browser. I had a couple of reports of
crashes due to the Adobe Reader issue, and don't have time to
investigate it thoroughly at the moment. If you're using Tiger, PDF
will still open in the drawer.

Hi
I have tetex installed via fink. I think it should be the latest
version (tetex-3.0-1) (How do I check?).
pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)
from he log:
(/sw/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/hyperref/hyperref.cfg
File: hyperref.cfg 2002/06/06 v1.2 hyperref configuration of TeXLive
and teTeX
)
*hyperref using default driver hpdftex*
(/sw/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/hyperref/hpdftex.def
File: hpdftex.def 2003/11/30 v6.74m Hyperref driver for pdfTeX
/sw/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/hyperref/nameref.sty
Package: nameref 2003/12/03 v2.21 Cross-referencing by name of section
\c@section@level=3D\count140
)
Is this the information you need?
Could this be the fault of fink's tetex ditribution?
Should I try it with the gwTex?
I don't think it has to do with the book class because if the other
packages are omitted but class is still book it works fine.
Thank you

Howdy,

I've been using gwTeX (Gerben Wierda's combination of teTeX+selected
TeXLive+etc.) so can't comment on the fink distribution. I do know
that I'm using the same version of pdftex but I have a newer version
of hyperref (2003/11/30 v6.74m). I don't know what else has changed,
but I'd try to update that.

Is it a Table of Contents listing or the actual indentation of the
sectioning the document that is the problem.

Regarding this point (and staying OT), after much experimentation, it =20=

seems the only way to get rid of the PDFMaker toolbars inside Word, =20
Excel and PowerPoint is to rename (to anything else) the folder /=20
Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/D=E9marre, containing macro =20=

The name "D=E9marre" is for the French version, the English version =20
