Subject: [ANN] TCOBrowser 0.82
From: "Adam R. Maxwell"
Date: Tue, 5 Jul 2005 21:29:10 -0700

I've released an update to TCOBrowser, which is more of a complete
rewrite. Hopefully it looks and works better, but there are likely
some glitches I've missed in testing. Please try it out and let me
know how it goes! This version should run on 10.3.x, but I haven't
tested that for a while (and of course none of the cool Spotlight
features work on 10.3).

Download at .

Changes in this version:

- Rewrote main display interface using Cocoa bindings
- Dates now display properly in the list
- Updated TeX catalogue, fixed some errors
- Customizable toolbar added
- Printing support added (currently prints the abstract of the
selected item or items)
- Text layout in the abstract view could raise an exception under
some conditions
- Rewrote preference handling code using Cocoa bindings
- Check and warn if MikTeX cabinet extraction is disabled before
putting up the download panel
- User defaults for documentation search path should stick properly now

Well, but what Ken does is not what is intended really but kind of a
dirty trick (although it might work fine).
I am using jurabib as my bib style, where you have an optional
"titleaddon" field for exactly this situation.

Hi Adam,

On Tiger: when the window is resized and the columns resized as well, =20=

the MikTeX icons seem to stay at a fixed position within the window, =20
independently from the column width.

Test: enlarge the TCOBrowser window significantly, the MikTeX column =20
will take all the added width and the MikTeX icons be centered =20
accordingly; then change the column widths, and resize the window, =20
the MikTeX icons won't move, even if they fall outside the window.

This is just a peculiarity of resizing the tableview, AFAICT, since =20
I've set it up for resizing in "Last Column Only" mode. If you =20
resize the window so that the last column falls inside the window =20
again, the MikTeX column will resize with the window again. You can =20
play with the popup menu in Interface Builder to see what the other =20
effects are like; I haven't tried that.

I saw this...

But not that. After resizing the window, the MikTeX column stayed the =20=

same length and was partially hidden. (Screenshots sent off-list.)

Getting OT here, but what about JPEG2000 support? I tried to google =20
this but found nothing. Is there any development going on regarding =20
this?

If you want to use fonts that are defined in some MAP file for pdftex,
dvips, or dvipdfm you need to tell this to ConTeXt:

	\loadmapfile [sls,PS3fonts]

If you're in a hurry just put

	\loadmapfile [psfonts]

or even shorter

	\loadmapfile [pdftex]

ConTeXt, if working in PDF or pdftex mode, can accept that a font is
described in the map files more than once (I checked with [psfonts,]).

Since it's so simple and without danger: why can't ConTeXt in TeXLive
2005 simply start with that setting? You spend days with updmap and
then ConTeXt does not notice anything of one's efforts!

tex4ht appears not to generate pictures for equations on my system. But
that was already the case in the previous TeX i-installer (expert, 2005).
The pictures are referenced in the HTML file, however, they are just not
there. There are no obvious error messages.

example:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\[ E=3Dmc^2 \]
\end{document}

Subject: Re: [OS X TeX] several \marginpar per page
From: "Sergei Mariev"
Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 20:30:02 +0200

Thanks everybody for suggestions! I think for my purposes the sidebar
environment is what I am going to use (I have not used the memoir
class before, but I think I will manage my marginal notes this way.)
Ideally, I would wish a way to put information on the margin as a
continuation (i.e. at the same hight) of the line where this commmand
is evoked, adding more lines (i.e. going down) like a parbox
expanding down. I would retain all the functionality of the
\marginpar, but prevent it (from being a float) i.e. from moving
freely up and down the page, by fixing the point at the same level on
the page where the line ends where the command is evoked...

My guess the problem is due to a lack of space before the tags
 and in the bitmap generation script within the

Peter, I saw the bug report regarding beamer, and hope to get working
on the problem no later than the weekend. It looks like beamer took a
major revision at the end of 2004, and tex4ht doesn't yet deal with
those changes. -eitan

Subject: font install July 6
From: "Charles Chapman Pugh"
Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 15:44:52 -0700

Hello.

I'm trying to install a type 1 postscript font for use with TexShop,
2.03, running on Tiger 10.4.1 The font is a lwfn file and there is
an afm file. The font was named Csc and worked fine in Textures.

Following Bruno Voisin's guide, I renamed the font Cscr8a, and using
the terminal window, succeeded in generating the file Cscr8a.pfb.

The three files, lwfn, afm, and pfb all are in the same folder. As
instructed, in the same folder I created a file named Csc-drv.tex
which contained the lines

input fontinst.sty
\latinfamily{Csc}{}
\bye

Bruno's next step is "Run TeX" on the file Csc-drv.tex to produce PL,
VPL, and FD files.

My question -- how? I tried various combinations in the typeset
menu of TeXShop. All gave tex errors as noted in the console, except
for plain tex with personal script. In this case I got a message
that the tool could not be found. I guess the tool is fontinst.sty.
But that file was indeed installed by the i-installer. It's in the
system library at location

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/fontinst/base/fontinst.sty

(Actually that is the address given by the getinfo service. I
imagine this is the same address as the path

iBook/Library/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/fontinst/base/fontinst.sty,

which is how it appears when opening iBook manually.)

Just for good measure, I put a copy of the "base" folder in a mirror
location

charlespugh/Library/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/fontinst/base

but still tex did not find the tool.

Suggestions?

Best,  Charles Pugh

BTW There is an apparent misspelling in Bruno's guide. It says that
the -drv.tex file should have the first line

input fontint.sty

as contrasted to fontinst.sty I did try it this way also, just to be
sure, but had no better luck.

Shouldn't that be '\input fontinst.sty' with a '\'? Then your file
should compile with Plain TeX. Without the '\' tex will typeset
'input fontinst.sty' and then complain that \latinfamily is an
undefined control sequence.

All control sequences need a '\'!

I just tried twice fontinst, once with with 'plain TeX' and second time=20=

with a simple fontinst.engine -- and it worked both times!

I think you should just ``\input fontinst.sty=B4=B4 with no need to copy=20=

anything ... but you should remove the the folder=20
charlespugh/Library/teTeX though!

A better setup is this, that too creates a MAP file for updmap (you=20
should copy Csc.map afterwards into=20
charlespugh/Library/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/updmap, a folder or tree of=20
folders you'd have to create first, on the command line in Terminal as=20=

``mkdir -p ~/Library/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/updmap=B4=B4, where you have =
to=20
run ``sudo updmap --nohash --enable Map=3DCsc.map=B4=B4 too to make =
teTeX=20
system notice the new MAP file)

\input fontinst.sty
\recordtransforms{Csc.recs}
\latinfamily{Csc}{}
\endrecordtransforms
% And now to the MAP file!
\input finstmsc.sty
\resetstr{PSfontsuffix}{.pfb} % otherwise it uses .pfa
\input Csc.recs
\donedrivers
\bye
