Hi everyone,

I've put together a significantly updated version of AquaTkbibtex, which
was my modest effort (released a year ago) to package tkbibtex in a more
Mac-friendly way. My Tcl/Tk skills are much greater than they were a
year ago, so I've made a lot of changes to the package:

1. The Applescript launcher is gone.
2. AquaTkbibtex is now a standalone application that supports
drag-and-drop launches of .bib files by itself.
3. I've reworked the GUI code extensively to make the general appearance
of tkbibtex more in line with Aqua interface conventions.
4. I've added a more intuitive print dialog.

The core functionality of the application is unchanged in terms of
parsing .bib files.

I have a beta version available for download at
http://www.wordtech-software.com/AquaTkbibtex.dmg

It's been developed and tested on 10.4; should run on 10.3 as well.

There isn't another link to it, as I'm not ready to update the tkbibtex
page at my site with the updated version. I'd appreciate bug reports,
feedback, etc.; I can then incorporate this feedback into the final =
version.

By the way, tkbibtex itself hasn't been updated for about three years.
If the program's main developer makes changes, I will try to track those
changes in my version or discuss merging my changes into his code.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to see if anyone uses LaTeX for writing documentation, and
then wanted to convert that documentation to Apple Help (with
appropriate tags). I'm doing this in some of my programs, including
Aquamacs, with a modified version of latex2html, and I'm thinking about
taking this a bit further and putting together something for other
people to use. If anyone has any interest something like this, please
let me know.

I use latex2html because I prefer its output (with navigation icons)
over tex4ht. If you look at Aquamacs's user help, you'll see that I've
replaced latex2html's rather clunky icons with something that's a little
cleaner.

Anyway, I appreciate any feedback.

For a moment, I thought that I had missed something really obvious,
but I already had that preference option checked. So I am back to
what I wrote earlier: BibDesk leaves Booktitle blank on the child
record when the Booktitle field does not exist on the parent. The
check box affects the creation of new parent records, and it is older
records that are causing the trouble. I guess what I need to do is
fix all my older records.

I understand that this auto-creation of the Booktitle field procedure
is due to a problem with BibTex itself. Have people always entered a
"Booktitle" field for any edited volumes?

It still seems, though, that the child record should not inherit
anything in the Title field for the book/incollection combination.

Does work here. A very minor thing I forgot yesterday: the window of =20
the potrace experimental i-Package in i-Installer has retained the =20
title "autotrace tracing program".

An example of the outputs of autotrace and potrace on exactly the =20
same input, with default settings in both cases, can be seen at =20
. autotrace is =20
better at tracing curves (like rounded corners), but introduces =20
curved artifacts otherwise (transforming lines of constant thickness =20
into lines of varying thickness, for example). potrace is better at =20
tracing straight lines, but has a tendency to miss curved lines =20
(missing, in particular, rounded corners). Thus it seems autotrace =20
would be better at calligraphy, and potrace at technical drawing. =20
Eventually I chose potrace, given the output had to be polished =20
afterwards anyway in Adobe Illustrator (by manipulating each control =20
point manually, so that straight lines are indeed straight lines, =20
rounded corners are indeed circular, etc.).

There were a few more glitches still. The default repository mentioned
was an autotrace i-Package (but that is no problem when you open via an
i-Directory) and the dependencies of autotrace were also still there as
well as one time in teh Readme.

How the potrace i-Package came about is not so difficult to guess.

Should I still trace and report yesterday's pdfTeX bug?

Yesterday in formats selection xetex was offered -- it only can't be=20
made because XeTeX seems still to be an add-on, so its choice is=20
offered a bit too early.

Exactly. And I thought the "Always Overwrite" option did exactly that.
Have you tried saving and re-opening the file? I am not sure when the
Booktitle information is set.

You should describe this in your bug report if it does not work for
you -- if it really does not work, it is a bug.

> I understand that this auto-creation of the Booktitle field
> procedure is due to a problem with BibTex itself. Have people
> always entered a "Booktitle" field for any edited volumes?

Yes.
Unfortunately an "incollection" item needs two titles, "Title" for
the article and "Booktitle" for the volume.
BibTeX's crossref mechanism works in a rather simple way: It takes
all information that is not present in the child item from the parent
item. An "incollection" already has a "Title" field, so the parent's
"Title" is ignored. But you can work around this by copying the
parent's "Title" to "Booktitle", so the child will inherit this
information correctly.

Are you subscribed the the BibDesk developer list? There was a lot of
discussion about this before the crossref feature was implemented
some weeks ago.

> It still seems, though, that the child record should not inherit
> anything in the Title field for the book/incollection combination.

Correct. And it won't inherit the Title, if it already has an own Title.

If your problem remains, we could move the discussion to the
Developer list.

Best,
Matthias

The offering of formats is based on what is in the fmtutil.cnf file. I do
not know if Thomas ever got around to having a sort of `available' check
on formats offered in that file. Cheking availability would be limited to
testing for an ini file and not all formats have that, so a real check
might be problematic.

Basically, choosing formats is editing the fmtutil.cnf file, there is no
certainty that everything for the format is available.

And if it fails to be produced, nothing serious happens, though people
might get confused if they try to study the output.

I'll see what I can do on this issue.

I'll see to it that I turn that into TL2004+ layout.

Subject: several \marginpar per page
From: "Sergei Mariev"

Dear all,

I am working on a text where I need to have several marginal notes on
each page. On top of that, the text does not suppose to have any
paragraphs for over 100 pages. Since the command \marginpar produces
a float and only a limited number of floats is allowed per page (? or
per paragraph?) I am getting the message "Floats lost...". I am
wondering, is there a way of having more floats on one page without
inserting a new paragraph? (I need on average 7 to 11 \marginpar per
page). Are there any packages that deal with that problem? Is it
possible to place some text on a margin without making it a float?
Any other approaches?

Thanks a lot in davance!

Dear all,

another question: if I use a \pagebreak command, the last line of the
page is not filled out to the margin and looks like it is is the last
line of a paragraph. Is there a way to make LaTex break the page

the page?

Thanks a lot for any suggestions!

This is exactly what \pagebreak is supposed to do: break _after_ the
current line where the command is.

Are you sure that you have not inserted a blank line after \pagebreak
or used \newpage; the latter behaves the way you describe.

Hello!

I want to type some text in the Lucida fonts from Java in ConTeXt.
pdfTeX has no problem to find their PostScript versions, dvips too,
because they're in the MAPs. But ConTeXt claims it's not finding
anything.

Is there a special ConTeXt map I have to updmap too?

I thought that was only cumbersome too, until I ran into this little
description (below) by Ken Shan, about a situation where you can use
differing title and booktitle (true, probably pretty rare, but still
made me feel less unhappy about it :)

If that doesn't work, you'll have to re-write the output routine or
wait for LaTeX3 belike, unless you can use Peter Wilson's Memoir
documentclass and his sidebar environment will work for you.

subject) by replying to a post from another thread. If you do this,
email clients, such as Apple's Mail, will then put all of these
messages together making it very difficult to find information.

(2) Please use *plain* text when posting to the list -- it makes the
archives much easier to read. This is done in Apple's Mail by going to:

Mail > Preferences > Composing

and then choosing plain text as the Message Format.

Thank you,

Subject: Tex on Tiger
From: "Hemant Bhargava"

I'm planning to upgrade to OS X Tiger - will this require any change to
my TeXshop/tetex configurations? Is a change required? If not,
desirable? And is the change straightforward or are there any potential
problems? (I will be doing this under a time crunch.)

Thanks

- Hemant

Also, make sure you don't call \marginpar from within a footnote. I
believe the same applies to other environments (e.g. picture) but am
not sure. -Ben

You'll probably have to run the i-Installer again, as the Tiger
installer may update some files that _may_ break the TeX install - at
least from the command-line, you may never notice this from TeXShop.

However, I don't think a normal update does any harm - but be sure to
update TeXShop and CocoASpell to the latest release. Only the latest
release of CocoASpell will run under Tiger, and TeXShop has seen so
many great improvements, that it'd be a shame not to enjoy those.

An 'Archive and Install'-update will require a re-run of i-Installer.

I find the prospect of 100 pages without the concept of a paragraph
rather hard to handle, and so does TeX.
It is the \par (implicitly called with a blank line) that allows the
internals of TeX to look for how to arrange things on the page.

Even with lots of paragraphs, in my experience it's hard to get lots
of \marginpar s to fall onto the correct pages. I have some documents
which use pop-up photographs that occur in the margins. Maybe 10+
per page. Invariably there are some which float to the next page ...

... this may help --- dunno, since I've not tried it.

A completely different way to do the margin/sidebar may indeed be what
is needed. The question then is how the information appearing there
is to relate to the main text in the body of the page.

Hope this helps,
