I installed autotrace using i-installer, but I get this error message
when I use it:

21:26 ~: autotrace --help
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libfreetype6.dylib

Any insights?

Thanks

I think I figured out the source of my difficulties. If you take a
book entry in which "Title" is entered but "Booktitle" is nonexistent/
empty and then use that entry to create a child record in BibDesk
(type: incollection), Title gets copied to Title but Booktitle in the
child record remains empty. I think it is not the desired behavior
although I understand why it is happening.

This does not happen when I start by creating a brand new book parent
record in BibDesk because BibDesk automatically copies whatever is in
Title down to Booktitle (adding the Booktitle field automatically in
the process). Then, the child record is created, both Title and
Booktitle get copied to the child fields of the same name. This is
better, but I think it would be better still if the Title field in
the child record were left blank, since it will nearly always (if not
always) be different from Booktitle in this book/incollection
scenario. The child's Title field can be still edited, of course,
but to change it one must click through a warning dialog saying that
a cross-referenced field is about to be changed.

I think (may be wrong about this) that older versions of BibDesk did
not automatically create a Booktitle field for book entries. It is
those older entries in my database that caused me the described
trouble when I tried to set up cross-referencing.

Those with more experience using cross-references please let me know
if I am off base, for I filed a bug report on the BibDesk page.
What I think should happen is that the Title field on the child
record should not be linked by default to the parent record and that
Booktitle on the child record should get filled from Booktitle on the
parent record if that field exists there but from Title if it does not.

Now, it be really cool if BibDesk automatically started in type
"incollection" when you option-click on a book entry and choose the
"New Publication with Crossref" option!

In any event, I absolutely love BibDesk. Cross-referencing is very
slick once I corrected the fields.

I like the digest option for the ability to rapidly browse through
the messages of the day. Being able to review the table of contents
to check for items of special interest is nice when time is short. I
would not revolt, however, were the option to disappear.

Excellent.

Maybe you could just leave them centered. It would be nice to be able
to resize it since my source for Keynote slides is often more than
can fit in the source part of the window. This will be even more of a
problem when I change my default source font to Monaco (12 or 13 pt).

Thank you again,

I have already seen enough arguments to keep it (in public and in
private). Don't worry digest users, nothing will change. :-)

Well, I for one, would not appreciate it. I often have to access my
email in various ways from various devices, from sophisticated mail
programs that, yes, I can program to vector the individual list
emails appropriately, to completely-stunned web-mail apps that either
don't allow it, or are on a machine or account that I am using for
the first time (been at a web cafe recently?). In the last two
cases, I really do not want to sort through the now thousands of
emails associated with the lists I belong to; in digest mode, the
thousands reduce to tens; tens I can handle.

Dear all,

thanks for all your suggestions; they were very helpful. I think
learning xml to handle such a relatively small database would be
overkill, but I was very impressed by the IMSBib project. I guess
I'll have to look into it more carefully than before: I want to use
my entries for TeXing, so something like Refbase might not be ideal,
but in the end, making a custom bibliography including only certain
items from a complete bibtex file may not be a simplification of my
workflow. So thanks for all your philosophical and technical thoughts
about the topic!

But you can configure this behavior! (Prefs -> Crossref -> Check the
"Duplicate Title to Booktitle" checkboxes)
After that it always should behave as desired.

Did you not get a warning on freetype not being available when
installing autotrace?

Anyway, installing freetype should fix this.

Hi all,

I am a digest subscriber, hence the late reply to this thread -- sorry for =
that.

Digest subscriptions are good for the reason Bruno mentions: they are
a ton less intrusive. This is a very important reason. This is why
all my subscriptions are digests. I used to think, naively, that this
is precisely the reason why digest subscriptions are offered at all.

> From: "Gerben Wierda"
> I am all in favour of forbidding digests. Most digest users forget to
> change the subject line and the in-reply-to headers are also incorrect.

Why doesn't the list server reject all email with the subject line
matching the pattern "Mac OS X TeX Digest" and sending a "Please
insert a specific subject" message to the poster? This will not help
with the more technical headers that are automatically generated, but
still will solve half of the problem Gerben mentions.

How many posts with non-informative subjects do we have on this list
by the way? Interestingly, the digest subscribers seem to not feel
precisely the problems they are causing to others.

Please excuse me if this email is a bit offensive but this list is so
valuable a resourse that I am really concerned about the possible
effect on its usability for digest readers like me.

Although the idea of changing the working habit and subscribing
real-time has some interest as well...

Best,
Andrei

Subject: [OS X TeX] LaTeXiT 1.2 beta
From: "Pierre Chatelier"

Hello,

Once again, LaTeXiT beta has been updated : http://ktd.club.fr/
programmation/fichiers/LaTeXiT-beta.dmg

Now the margins can be set in the preferences
The document window is resizable to increase text areas size (and the
preference pane about default preamble is resizable, too)
You can use the font panel inspector in text areas, as in any other
MacOS X text-aware application (So, Command-T triggers the font
panel, and you can latexise with Command-Shift-T)
Due to internal changes to handle this new feature, you may encounter
incompatibilities with previous versions of LaTeXiT. If it is the
case, do warn me and delete your latexit preferences, history and/or
library. (see ~/Library/LaTeXiT and ~/Preferences/fr.club.ktd.latexit)

Regards,

Pierre

Yes, freetype2 was installed, and, no, i-Installer had no complaints
when I installed autotrace. I looked in /usr/local/lib and
libfreetype6.dylib is indeed not there but there are these files:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1821780 Dec 31 2004 /usr/local/lib/
libfreetype.6.3.7.dylib
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root admin 23 Jul 4 05:58 /usr/local/lib/
libfreetype.6.dylib -> libfreetype.6.3.7.dylib

The closeness of the names prompts me to ask if there is a problem here.

Thanks for your help.

From: "Stephen Moye"

I was checking the PATH variable in connection with another problem
and came across what looks like an anomaly. If I use Terminal and
type 'echo $PATH' I get this:

/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/
powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/local/bin

but in xterm I get this:

/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin

Why are these different?

Always amazed by how much is left to learn about unix.

Please count my vote against suppressing the digest service.

Frankly I would prefer to keep the digest. I have posted (carefully)
only a couple of times
over the years. If you have problems with "reply" postings from
digest readers, you could
arrange for these "replies" to go to a different maibox, e.g

             MacOSX-TeX-Digest@email.esm.psu.edu

The mailbox could send back an automatic e-mail which essentially says:

This is an authomatic message, do not reply.

You should not directly reply to digest messages.
To intervene in a thread, send a mail to "MacOSX-
TeX@email.esm.psu.edu".

If you are starting a new thread the subject is simply he title
of the new thread,
     e.g. "My question on XXX".

If you are intervening on an existing thread, e.g.
"Existing_Thread"
the subject should be "Re: [OS X TeX] Existing_Thread".

The gist of this message could be included in the footer of the
digest e-mails
sent to subscribers. People would learn fast!

Thanks,

     Nicola Cabibbo

I would suggest running a repair privileges on your system and reboot.
From this info, the installation seems correct but this is typically
the kind of behaviour you get when the privileges are not OK.

Because I have not found a way to patch the X11 path settings for all
users. The X11 path is not changed by the i-package setup. Maybe I have
received from someone info on how to do this and I have lost it.

Apart from typos, this probably will not work now that subject is

But forget about it. I just had an unnecessary urge to say something

Subject: Request for testing on a short notice
From: "Gerben Wierda"

Dear All,

I need a favour: I need some testing to be done on short notice.

1. The TeX-fat.dmg volume has been updated from the January TeX
i-Package to the May TeX i-Package. I need for people to test this on
as many versions of Mac OS X >=3D 10.2 as possible. The reason is that I
will be away in a week and this volume will be used by a Swedish
University for a loan-CD for Mac users. They need the go before August,
which for me means, this week.

2. I have produced a new TeX i-package on the *EXPERIMENTAL*
i-Directory. This package has any fixes from a newer TL repository. It
also has a TL2005 binaries produced from sources from July 3, 2005, so
very recent. It might be considered the first release candidate level
for TL2005.
More important for me, the 2005 binaries have been produced with gcc 4
on Mac OS X 10.4. My main interests are thus:
- Does the 2005-set work on 10.2 and 10.3? (tested slightly on 10.3.9
and it seems to work)
- Are the 2004 (and 2003 if needed) OK?

pdftex -version
pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5)
kpathsea version 3.5.5

I would like to see some serious testing with TeX4ht (I did see some

I've been repairing privileges a lot lately, but ran it again,
rebooted -- and got the same error. I uninstalled freetype2 and
autotrace and reinstalled -- got the same error.

Later --

I've been looking at a G4 powerbook on which autotrace does work. In /
usr/local/lib there *is* a file ibfreetype6.dylib which is missing in
the G5 desktop that is having the problem. Also missing is
ibfreetype6.3.4.dylib. Grasping at straws -- is there a problem with
i-installer and G5/Tiger?

There's something illogical here. Do you mean the first ls output, =20
reporting libfreetype.6.dylib is present (as a symlink to =20
libfreetype.6.3.7.dylib), was obtained on the G4, not on the G5 on =20
which you're having the problem? If so, the first suggestions, re. =20
installing the FreeType i-Package and repairing permissions, might as =20=

well solve the problem on the G5.

Let's get back on track. First, notice that the file that autotrace
is looking for is:

     libfreetype6.dylib

and notice that there is no dot before the '6'.

If I do 'ls -la libfree*' on the G5 (on which autotrace does not
work) I get this:

9:02 lib: ls -la libfree*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1821780 Dec 31 2004 libfreetype.6.3.7.dylib

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 834 Dec 31 2004 libfreetype.la
9:02 lib:

And on the G4 PowerBook (on which autotrace does work):

9:03 lib: ls -la libfree*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1821780 Dec 31 2004 libfreetype.6.3.7.dylib

Notice the presence of the file that autotrace is looking for. Why
are G4 and G5 (both Tiger) directories different? I have repaired
permissions to no avail.

The symlink was not created (or removed somehow) on your G5.

> Also missing is ibfreetype6.3.4.dylib. Grasping at straws -- is there

Maybe, though unlikely. But what you can do is this:
1. Install freetype on your G5/Tiger
2. At the end of the install, create a report and mail it to me (off
list). I'll see what that tells us.
3. After the install, look at /usr/local/lib

I have updated autotrace so it checks for libfreetype6.dylib instead of
  libfreetype.dylib. Just to be sure.

Howdy,

Using the font panel doesn't seem to change anything. I thought it
would change the text font used in the input text box.

I think that changing the input font and the window size should be
sticky, like a preference but set the way it's set now.

While simply moving the magnification slider no longer gives fuzzy
output, clicking on the output window makes the output display
fuzzier and then using the magnification slider magnifies the
pixelization. I believe this is the same thing that was pointed out
by Jerome.

Good Luck,

It seems autotrace is looking for an older version of FreeType =20
(judging by the file dates), in which the naming scheme =20
libfreetype6.dylib was used instead of the more recent libfreetype.=20
6.dylib (with a dot added). The G4 has the two versions, hence =20
autotrace is happy.

Why you have these two version on the G4 I don't know: an older =20
FreeType i-Package, or a FreeType of another origin (compiled from =20
source?)?

If this analysis is correct, the remedy would be -- I imagine -- an =20
update of the FreeType and autotrace i-Packages, so that they have =20
matching versions (autotrace being updated to a version looking for =20
the current version of FreeType, or FreeType being downgraded to the =20
version that autotrace is looking for). Or is the added dot in the =20
file name an error at compilation time?

That said, I prefer personally potrace to autotrace.

Yep, this is a bug. autotrace is still looking for a previous version=20
of freetype and the freetype package did not remove it. So autotrace=20
needs updating and freetype needs to clean up older versions on=20
install.

The latter is done. The former has some problems. I'll get back o you=20
on this soon.

But my answer would be "yes it does !"
If I use the font panel, the text font in input text box does change.
I can't figure out why it would not work on your computer...

Ok for the size, it's now automatically saved (no need the make a
pref pane for that)
For the font, ok, I will add that.

I found out a bug (did you notice some "selector not recognized" in
your console log ?) about that. Fixed.

Howdy,

One additional item. Setting default margins in the Preferences-

when I try to set 0.5pt (or 0,5pt) I get 0.01pt and pressing any

I too prefer potrace, but autotrace works on a wider variety of file =20
types such as tiff.

Howdy,

Hmmm... I'm running 10.4.1 If I change the font to something really
silly (Lucida Bright at 14pt) I don't get any change from the default
Helvetica at 12pt in the display although the font does appear to be
changed in the font panel.

Ahhh... now I see! If I select some text before changing the font it
the new font gets selected but if I don't the font remains the same.
Maybe that will change when the selection becomes a default.

Subject: Questions about makeindex and TeXShop
From: "Luis Sequeira"
Date: Mon, 4 Jul 2005 15:10:15 +0100

Hi, I tried to use makeindex straight from TeXShop, but it doesn't
seem to work.
If I open, say, file.idx in TeXShop the typesetting command changes
to "MakeIndex", but the typeset button is greyed out and Cmd-T does
nothing.

I have no problem running "makeindex file" from the Terminal but I
wonder why it doesn't work from TeXShop and if there is something I
can do to make it work. Particularly, I have a friend that is
Terminal-shy and I told her she could do it within TeXShop.

As an alternative, I created a little applescript and placed in a
TeXShop macro, which is not that bad, with a key equivalent and all,
but this ought to be unnecessary, right?

Any pointers will be most welcome.

TIA

Howdy,

I'd try simply opening the original .tex file and running makeindex
from the typeset menu or Shft-Cmd-I. I have a feeling that TeXShop is
removing the .tex and putting in the .idx in the background.

Hope that works.

Earlier this year I traced a JPEG logo to convert it to EPS. After =20
much failed attempts, I used the following route:

- Use either GraphicConverter (came free on my Mac), or convert from =20
ImageMagick, to convert the JPEG to black-and-white BMP. I'm not sure =20=

which of the two I used eventually. Possibly GraphicConverter, as it =20
provides a GUI for setting the value of the threshold used when =20
converting to B&W -- and seeing live the influence of this value. The =20=

choice of the threshold has a crucial effect on the quality of the =20
final EPS file.

- Applied both potrace and autotrace to the BMP file independently. =20
Found out the output of potrace is cleaner (less tracing artifacts).

I also tried letting potrace and/or autotrace use their own =20
algorithms for converting the original color file to black-and-white =20
before tracing it: the output was much worse than with the manual =20
conversion.

That said, it was all before hearing Illustrator CS2 includes a =20
tracing algorithm. Now I probably wouldn't go that route.

Ok, I understand. So you were expecting the whole text to be
changed ? Mmmmhhh... Yes, that makes sense in this context. It is not
a text editor, so the text should be homogeneous.
However, a user may want to highlight some words, so I think I will
keep the actual behaviour.

Hmmm... this thread is in danger of becoming seriously OT -- but I =20
cannot help but reflect that the Adobe tools for autotrace have =20
heretofore been odd in one way or another. Even Streamline was hard =20
to control so that you could predict what sort of output you'd get =20
without wasting hours fiddling with the settings. I tried Silhouette =20
(www.silhouetteonline.com) and found it remarkably capable, though I =20
don't do enough of that sort of thing to justify the cost of US$360.

This digest user would regret that decision.

One or two digests a day are much easier for me to handle than one or
two douzains of individual messages. Suppose you're on several lists
(most people are; I'm currently on three mac-related lists). Rather
than having hundreds of messages piling up in my mailbox - or do
nothing but read e-mail as it arrives - I simply take a bit of time
every morning to catch up on things.

And, yes, I have filters that put my mac-related mail in a separate
mailbox; still, I'd rather deal with them in digest form.

Howdy,

I guess I wasn't expecting the previous text to change but all the
following text after choosing the font to follow even if there was no
selected text when I made the change. If there was no text selected
when I made the font change anything I typed after that was still in
the original font.

However, this should not be a problem as you should never NEED to use
xterm. Apple's terminal app should do everything you need and works
better with other aqua apps (as far as copying and pasting...).

There was a thread "[OS X TeX] X11" on similar topics at the end of =20
May. More or less it seems there's no straightforward solution:

- Creating or patching a ~/.xinitrc for every user of a given Mac. =20
But it's not system-wide.

- Modifying the system-wide /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. The problem is =20
that, in case some users have a custom ~/.xinitrc, this system-wide =20
file isn't read for them.

- By creating or patching, again for every user of a Mac, a file =20
~/.MacOSX/environment.plist. This affects all GUI applications =20
launched by a given user and may (or rather will) break some. In =20
particular it has been known to break i-Installer.

Unfortunately, all the FAQs I've browsed through, starting from =20
Apple's own , refer =20=

to the dreaded environment.plist approach.

Other solutions, of course, are:

- Use full paths in xterm.

- Use open-x11 in Terminal.app, as in "open-x11 xdvi" or simply "open-=20=

x11 xterm".

If you launch xterm as a login shell, with

xterm -ls &

in your ~/.xinitrc or X11 Applications menu:

Applications --> Customize Menu...

Menu Name Command
Terminal xterm -ls &

you will get the same PATH as with Terminal.app.

It is looking good. One more request regarding fonts. I would really
like to be able to set the default font in the main LaTeXiT source
panel. Otherwise, it appears that I will need to change it in the
source panel every time I start LaTeXiT (the Default Preamble in the
Preferences seems to remember my font choice).

Thanks again,

Again, can you add the ability to set the default font so that we
don't have to change it every time?

One more thing. Now when I typeset (with 1.2rc7), I don't get
anything in the PDF preview. I tested with my entire preamble
consisting of:

\documentclass[12pt]{article}

and I get nothing. I am able to drag the preview to the desktop and
open it in Preview, but it is an empty rectangle.

Howdy,

It works very well indeed! Thank you very much. Your responsiveness =20
to requests is to be admired.

Now we need a word processor that uses LinkBack and takes into =20
account baseline information. Will the Keynote LinkBack Plugin take =20
that into account? that would give me a quick way to check it all out.

Installs OK on Tiger. I haven't attempted to use it yet.

On the other hand the experimental Autotrace (also of today) doesn't =20
install: it's looking for libfreetype6.dylib, whereas the most recent =20=

FreeType includes libfreetype.6.dylib (with a dot between libfreetype =20=

I switched to the digest format in order to reduce the volume coming=20

account. This list does have a relatively high volume, so using the=20
digest mode does make a difference.

Works fine here, though my setup is not necessarily the most =20
interesting for testing purposes: OS X 10.4.1, TL2005.

I tried to compile both a pdfLaTeX and a XeLaTeX document. Both went =20
OK. Probably subjective: I have the impression pdfLaTeX is faster =20
(and XeLaTeX possibly slower).

Probably subjective as well: it seems the line tracing algorithm =20
might have changed, in that horizontal and vertical lines seem =20
thinner (especially in XeLaTeX).

The current autotrace is broken. And it turns out the current autotrace
dies on configuration with a newer ImageMagick. Hence it is some work
to get this fixed.

autotrace seems not to be maintained anymore. The last version is from
January 2004 and its build (configure) is broken (does not recognize
ImageMagick 6.1.7 as being more recent than 5.2.0). I patched it and
compiled it and it has been uploaded. Autotrace is now dependent on
both Freetype2 and ImageMagick.

So, if all is well, it should work now.
