Hi,

What is the recommended way to install latex2html these days? Has any
progress been made since
? I
understand there are a large number of dependencies, but I'd like to
avoid using Fink, if possible.

Thanks in advance,

Subject: [ANN] TCOBrowser 0.81
From: "Adam R. Maxwell"
Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2005 20:15:53 -0700

I've just uploaded a new beta release of TCOBrowser, with some fairly
significant changes. TCOBrowser now supports Spotlight, so you can
essentially search (part of) CTAN from Spotlight on 10.4. Numerous
display and performance issues have also been addressed, but there's
still more to be done if any Cocoa programmers out there want a
challenge...

It's available from , and a
complete list of changes follows. Thanks to those of you who
reported problems with the last version!

--
Adam

Version 0.81
- Now uses Spotlight to find local documentation (if available)
- New metadata importer, so you can search the catalogue from
Spotlight and jump directly to an entry
- Cache icons in table for faster scrolling
- Sorting by Author now works correctly
- Abstract text is now wrapped properly, and whitespace is collapsed
- Authors without a first name no longer have a trailing comma
- Outdated text referring to caching in preferences was removed
- Added preferences for Abstract font size
- Can now set entries to open in the web drawer, or in your browser
(preferences)
- Sorting by local doc is now fast
- UI updates properly after updating the MikTeX listing

Subject: [ANN] BibDesk 1.1.2
From: "Adam R. Maxwell"
Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2005 20:35:28 -0700

The BibDesk development team is pleased to announce the arrival of
BibDesk 1.1.2, which has numerous new features and bugfixes. Thanks
to those of you who file RFE and bug reports on SourceForge at
; we've
addressed a number of those issues for this release.

After writing release notes for two apps tonight, I can't think of
anything clever to add here. Oh, the URL: .

IMPORTANT: note that changes made with the new find-and-replace
features are undoable, but you may want to have a backup copy of your
file just in case. Our rigorous QA process is designed to ferret out
the most insidious bugs, and we're relying on all of you to let us
know as soon as you find them.

Complete release notes follow:

New Features
   * Global macros can be defined for all bibliographies (RFE
#1217106); this should be helpful for people who keep @strings in a
separate file. The contents of BibTeX style files (.bst) can be
pasted in for this purpose. See online help for details.
   * Errors and warnings should be more informative now, rather than
displaying "Paste/Drag" at line 0 for author splitting errors (RFE
#1221667)
   * Can now copy-and-paste from error window (bug #1223110)
   * Edit menu now has a "Duplicate" option (RFE #1221961)
   * Find and Replace panel added: allows searching and replacing
in fields, using substring or regular expression-based searches.
Please see the online help for usage examples, and file bug reports
if it doesn't make sense.

Bugs Fixed
   * Fixed incorrect tooltip in autocompletion preferences
   * Major changes for performance in sorting and displaying large
files
   * Editing abstract/annote text should be fast now, independently
of file size
   * Should no longer see two "Update available" windows
   * Preview window menu item is no longer disabled; we show a
dialog saying you need to enable TeX previewing (bug #1223392)
   * New item from pasteboard menu item no longer crashes if you
have PDF on the pasteboard (bug #1223402)
   * Window title for "inbook" no longer uses the "Title" field (bug
#1223405)
   * BTParse is now a framework, and can be compiled as a Universal
binary
   * Double-clicking a table column header no longer opens an editor
for the selected row
   * Memory usage should be improved, particularly with large files
   * Macros are now de-TeXified when reading a file (bug #1224891)
   * Fixed some font and alignment issues in the GUI
   * Searching by "All Fields" no longer raises an exception with
crossrefs under certain conditions (bug #1229796)
   * Undo past save no longer causes the main window to be
disconnected from cmd-w
   * Documents are no longer marked dirty after autosorting for
crossrefs (bug #1229791)

If you install via the i-installer, you can add all the dependencies
that way. Then just do

./configure
make
make install (as root)

(after downloading and uncompressing the source of course).

Not too hard. This worked for me, but since I use tex4ht I cannot say
if the install works as expected. I can only say the install was
trivial. Why don't you use tex4ht? It is installed by default when
you use the i-installer.

The remark still stands: the current gs has no problems with the
NOCACHE option, your version ahsn't either (IIRC), but some versions
in between had. You're right though: Preview doesn't show anything in
that case either.

Hi Adam,

I was willing to check the UTIs claimed by the included SpotLight =20
importer

     "/Applications/TCOBrowser.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/=20
TCOImporter.mdimporter",

to make sure they didn't conflict with the other importers for =20
the .ps, .pdf and .dvi files:

     "/System/Library/Spotlight/PS.mdimporter", (from Apple)
     "/Library/Spotlight/DVIImporter.mdimporter", (from you)
     "/System/Library/Spotlight/PDF.mdimporter", (from Apple)

But I couldn't remember the command, if any, for returning the UTIs =20
claimed by a given importer. I looked through the Xcode Reference =20
Library with no luck.

The world seems in order, though, as TCOBrowser doesn't seem to =20
interfere with these other importers:

legimc11:~ brunovoisin$ mdimport -d1 -f /usr/local/teTeX/share/=20
texmf.tetex/doc/latex/base/fntguide.dvi
2005-07-01 09:39:09.953 mdimport[636] Import '/usr/local/teTeX/share/=20
texmf.tetex/doc/latex/base/fntguide.dvi' type 'com.mac.amaxwell.dvi' =20
using 'file://localhost/Library/Spotlight/DVIImporter.mdimporter/'
2005-07-01 09:39:09.959 mdimport[636] At 2005-07-01 09:39:09 +0200 =20
dviFilePath is /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/doc/latex/base/=20
fntguide.dvi

Does this mean TCOImporter references only the local TCOBrowser =20
cache, not the original .ps, .pdf and .dvi files.

Only minor frown at the program: its name, as TCO has annoying Evil =20
Empire resonances (ie the Total Cost of Ownership debate). Seems =20
immensely useful otherwise.

I've defined my very own UTI and file extension, so there shouldn't
be any conflict. You can use mdls and mdimport commands to do what
you're asking (I always have to check the man pages for options).

Correct. I create a cache in ~/Library/Caches/Metadata, and
Spotlight searches those files using the bundled importer. Hence,
each catalogue entry can show up in Spotlight as its own file, and
TCOBrowser can jump to it immediately. At least, it works for me ;).

Never even thought of that :). Oh well.

Subject: breaking word/word/word

I have the sentence

In this course we will be dealing with objects sitting on a
counter/desk/table and we will represent these objects on a
    board/notebook.

and LaTeX will not break counter/desk/table which thus extends into the
margin. Is there a way to force it to break it?

Alternatively, there is the possibility that LaTeX is hinting that the
above is not a sentence and that I shouldn't really ask it to typeset
it. If so, what should I write?

Can't you insert the suggested breaks using \-? That is:

In this course we will be dealing with objects sitting on a coun\-ter/
desk/ta\-ble and we will represent these objects on a board/note\-book.

I think this will work.

I hope this helps.

What about using old-fashioned commas and conjunctions instead of slash
signs? That might be what Latex is hinting you to do!

Otherwise, when Latex will refuse to hyphen a word, you can force it by
inserting it manually where you see fit. There must be a more elegant
way, but it works for me.

Use \slash instead of /. Alternatively, the babel system has some methods=

As an aside, it seems to me that devices like SpotLight (but I am still=20
with Panther) and Google mail presuppose that you know specifically what=20
you are looking for so they will find it for you =85 once you have=20

I am because Intaglio remembers the way Save A Copy As =85 saved and, if=20
you set it that way, will save the file as cropped pdf.

By the way, Dave "Novalis" Turner, GPL Compliance Engineer, wrote to me=20
that "PDF is NOT considered to be suitable for revising the document=20

Transparent copies".

Excellent; no money for Illustrator though, and most of the figures =20
are graphs anyway, so Illustrator is overkill for those.

Felt obvious when I wrote it but, just now, it took me a couple of=20
minutes to remember. Sorry about that.

Instead of

    By the way, =85

I should have written:

Also, if another pro for having figures "within" would be that the
