Subject: Using Babel with I-Installer tex installation
From: "Frederick Hoyt"
Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 22:04:28 -0500

Hello,

I am having trouble using babel with an xelatex document. The document
contains the following in the preamble:

\usepackage[english]{babel}

This generates the following error message:

!LaTeX Error: Unknown option 'english' package for 'babel'. However,
the english language definition file does exist, so I am puzzled as to
why this won't work.

This is what I know:

(i)	I have english.ldf in my tetex tree, under /tex/generic/babel;

(ii)	I have a full babel directory in my ~/Library/texmf tree;

This is what I do not know:

(iii)	Whether babel installed with the i-Installer tex installation? I
looked into the appropriate file tree (/usr/local/share/texmf...) and
did not find any babel directory;

(iv)	Whether I have babel in my ~/Library/texmf tree correctly
installed;

(v)	Whether there additional format files that I need to create for
this to work.

Thanks to whomever can tell me what I am doing wrong.

Fred Hoyt

The sparse documentation is here:

wrapfig too is supported by tex4ht.

One thing would be useful with eMail related applications: please don't

Why have two babel directories? One is enough, and certainly better.

You mean you don't have /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/=20
generic/babel/? Where is the directory referenced in (i), then?

No need for any babel installation there.

Not for the English language.

1) Install Xcode, in case you don't have it. If you don't have it on =20
CD or DVD, go to the Apple Developer's site and click on "Not a Member?" to join in. It's =20
free (the Online membership, that is, not the select or Premier ones =20
for which you have to pay). Afterwards you'll be able to log in, and =20
go to a downloads page to download Xcode .

2) For safety, make a copy of the TeXShop application on your Desktop.

3) Back to /Applications, Ctrl-Click on TeXShop and select "Show =20
Package Content" in the pop-up that appears.

4) Inside the new TeXShop window, navigate to Contents/Resources/=20
German.lproj/ (depending on your selected language in System Prefs/=20
International).

5) Double-click MainMenu.nib, and in the menu bar window that appears =20=

select Format then the line whose shortcut you're willing to change. =20
After that it's all straightforward (replacing Cmd-> and Cmd-< by Cmd-=20=

[ and Cmd-], for example).

6) Use this modified TeXShop and after a few days, if all goes well, =20
delete the unmodified copy.

7) When Dick Koch releases the next version of TeXShop, containing =20
already a fix for this issue, delete your customized copy and install =20=

the new version.

Hope this helps,

(i) in my original message referred to
~/Library/texmf/tex/generic/babel.

However, the proper installation is present under
/usr/local/teTeX/share/...: I had failed to look under the /generic
directory.

Based on the rest of Bruno's response, I have babel correctly
installed, including the english.ldf.

However, I still get the same error message when I run my document with
the babel package declaration - \usepackage[english]{babel}, namely:

 > !LaTeX Error: Unknown option 'english' package for 'babel'.

I have googled this particular error message, as well as searched the
archives for this list and have not found any relevant information.

So once again, are there any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

For what it's worth, I am using the most recent version of the tex
installation provided by i-installer.

Thank you again,

Fred Hoyt

Every time I resume working on "the" book with TeXShop 1.40, I have to
reopen the LaTeX panel. I am not sure but it seems to me that TeXShop
1.35e used to remember when the LaTeX panel had been left open upon
closing the file. If so, any reason why this behaviour could not be set
as a preference?

That's odd! Only thing I can think of: you introduced invisible =20
characters in the name "english" while typing it. What you can try:

- Remove the [english] option alltogether (it's the default anyway).

- Retype the line

     \usepackage[english]{babel}

completely.

- Try using [american] or [USenglish] instead.

In case none works, then there must be something broken in your babel =20=

and/or LaTeX installation. Possible remedies:

- =46rom the command line, "sudo texhash".

- Reinstall the TeX i-package completely. In case you customized the =20
choice of hyphenation patterns (or languages, I don't remember how i-=20
Installer calls them), make sure this is done consistently with your =20
planned used of babel.

- Verify /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/generic/config/=20
language.dat looks allright. For example, regarding English, and =20
given I have added British to the list of hyphenation patterns, mine =20
contains:

Hello Frederick!

Could we see a bit more of your log and of your TeX file?

The log file should have something like these lines:

(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/latex/base/article.cls
Document Class: article 2004/02/16 v1.4f Standard LaTeX document class
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/latex/base/size11.clo))
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/babel/babel.sty
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/babel/english.ldf
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/babel/babel.def)))

And the TeX file should be for a reasonable test as simple as possible,=20=

i.e., most lines should start with % or be empty. When this works then=20=

you can remove more and more ``%=B4=B4 from the other \usepackage lines =
too=20
find when it breaks. When this first simple document already fails,=20
then it's rather sure that something in you installation is defective=20
... To determine what such change english to some other language you=20
have made active at installation time!

When did you last run sudo texhash?

It works when I do this. However, this is not a solution because there

This didn't make any difference.

This didn't either.

The language.dat file seems to be in order.

Last night, and again this morning for good measure. It does not make a
difference.

I will try re-installing tex and making sure that the hyphenation

Remove babel.sty from your personal texmf. Babel.sty already resides in
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/babel/babel.sty

You might still have
/Users/fmhoyt/Library/texmf/tex/latex/misc/english.ldf and particularly
/Users/fmhoyt/Library/texmf/tex/latex/misc/babel.def ...

What is openany in \documentclass[10pt,openany]{article}? Does your
example work without it? And \TeXXeTstate=3D1: it has to do with RL
instead of LR, I presume. How are the results without in a step-by-step
procedure?

I don't know what to say. A few months ago I compiled in XeLaTeX a =20
multilingual document containing:

\usepackage[german,french,british]{babel}

and all went fine. I just verified it still compiles today, after =20
changing

     %&program=3Dxelatex
     %&encoding=3DUTF-8 Unicode

to

     %!TEX TS-program =3D xelatex
     %!TEX encoding =3D UTF-8 Unicode

If I were you, I would remove all trace of babel from ~/Library/=20
texmf/ (babel.sty, english.ldf, language.dat, etc.), then re-run the =20
Configure stage of the TeX i-Package completely, then reinstall XeTeX.

I tried with your input file. Where you get:

Thus it really seems to be connected with your setup.

You may also try, in Terminal:

     kpsewhich english.ldf
     kpsewhich -format xelatex english.ldf

Both should return:

     /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/babel/english.ldf

If they don't, reinstall seems the only way forward.

The most important difference on the Mac side in "syncing" is
pdfsync which allows this to happen between pdf and source. This
works with a large number of editors and viewers. However, I don't
think it's been done with pico yet. If you like pico, you might try
nedit instead (it's x-windows). Alternatively, plain emacs from the
command line is more powerful then pico (it has a built in
understanding of LaTeX). It's not an easy learning curve, but given
you like the command line...

I'd still install TeXShop and iTeXMac to play with. I rotate amongst
multiple tools depending on the size of the task and my mood. There's
a long list of software on the mac-tex web site (URL below). I'd look
at all the short descriptions. I'll be something sounds good.

Summary: Terminal is sufficient.

Yes, but weren't Formula 1 car going to have automatic transmissions?

But I agree with you with even a run of the mill clutch=97currently that=20
of a 1990 Nissan Sentra.

Still, I am totally happy with straight TeXShop. No terminal for me.

That's not true. Look at the logfile. It has:

So babel.sty *IS* in your personal directory.

Ah, but one of the nice things about TeXShop 2.03 under Tigerrrrr is
that there is (approximate but pretty good) ``syncing'' between the
displayed .pdf and the source .tex without using pdfsync. That is
because TeXShop 2.03 uses the internal PDF framework of Tigerrrr
which allows .pdf searching.

In the end... to each his own!

Does it work with multiple source files in various directories?

Howdy,

I just played around with it bit and it seemed to work. Using \include
{} with absolute paths didn't seem to compile; at least with \include
{/Users/myname/Desktop/testf1/test1}. As long as I stayed with
relative paths I was able to go two deep in two different directories
off of the Desktop where the test.tex root file was located. I made
sure that each of the included files had a line like

%!TEX root =3D (relative path back to root)

and was able to go sync in either direction between the .pdf and
proper .tex file.

Certainly a simple test and not exhaustive.

Good Luck,
