From: "Stephen Anderson"

As the one who initiated this discussion, I should have taken a more
active part in it, but since I read this list as a digest, I tend to
be a bit behind the curve.

To repeat, I for one would certainly use the crossref feature if it
were available. My bibliography file typically has many, many
entries that use it, since a single edited collection or proceedings
volume will show up as the source of several referenced articles.
Crossrefs not only make it easier to enter this data, but also to
correct mistakes just once for the whole volume. Related to this is
the fact that I often know about a volume and its contents, and want
to refer to the articles in it, well before it actually appears and
publication data are available. With crossrefs, I can put the papers
in the bibliography, stub in the book details, and fledge them out
when the work actually appears.

I do appreciate the macro capacity in BibDesk, and I make use of that
too. As others have noted, it "just works" as far as I can tell, so
I never mentioned it explicitly -- though of course, I haven't tested
it very much, since the bibliographies I mostly use aren't much good
in BibDesk without crossrefs.

As far as the way an implementation ought to work: an entry A with a
crossref to another entry B should show up (and be sorted) as if any
field for which A does not have content had the content entry B
assigns to it. Circularity is prevented by definition, though
perhaps it needs to be flagged if it occurs in an ill-formed .bib
file. The indirectly addressed fields shouldn't be directly editable
(under entry A), but should have an icon or something indicating
their status. That implements the semantics of bibtex crossrefs, and
anything more (like dragging entries onto each other to create
crossrefs) is candy. I hope I will be excused (and not considered
too much of an ingrate) if I say that a GUI interface to bibtex
databases that doesn't implement this property of the language is
lacking in a more fundamental way than simple failure to provide some
convenience feature.

Thanks very much to the developers of BibDesk for their work, which I
hope very much to be able to take advantage of.

I didn't know about adding the "html" after htlatex latexdoc

I tired it and saw the html output had slightly=20
different (better) formatting. Could you please=20
tell me a bit more about what it does?

Also, I didn't know about the info option.

What other kind of things like this exist?

Hi Ury,

1. You posted to the wrong address (TeX Live) which is why I only saw
this message today. Please go to http://www.rna.nl/ and find a pointer
there to become a member of the Mac OS X TeX mailing list.
2. By default, TeXShop is configured to use pdfTeX which does not
understand EPS. In TeXShop settings you can for backward compatibility
switch to TeX+dvips

In addition it would be better to replace the option [emtex] by =20
[dvips], or simply omit it, since in TeX + Ghostcript mode in TeXShop =20=

(actually TeX + dvips + Ghostscript) LaTeX will detect automatically =20
the use of dvips and then select the appropriate option. As for =20
emtex, it's a distribution of TeX for MS-DOS.

ok, two things.
(I) I forgot to read the IMPORTANT_README.
(II) After writing defaults write TeXShop UseOldHeadingCommands NO
      everything worked

I guess supporting both would be incompatible, right?

apparently you did not, the last time :-)

Do you really mean

     defaults write TeXShop UseOldHeadingCommands NO

and not

     defaults write TeXShop UseOldHeadingCommands YES

I thought that NO was the default setting, which had the consequence =20
of breaking backwards-comptability, and that changing the value to =20
YES ensured this compatibility, hence making the current XeTeX =20
examples displayed and typeset correctly by TeXShop.

> > This also means that the XeTeX samples should be changed at some

Personally I think backwards-compatibility is always desirable, and =20
that it would be better for TeXShop, while still describing the new =20
syntax in the doc, to provide compatibility with the old syntax by =20
setting the default value of UseOldHeadingCommands to YES.

Another solution would be to provide, in the distro, an AppleScript =20
(or any other type of script, provided it's straightforward to =20
operate -- by double-click or drag-and-drop) to (1) convert files =20
using the old syntax to files using the new syntax while (2) taking =20
all necessary steps to ensure that, in the process, the encoding is =20
properly interpreted upon opening and saving.

But, again, I think something transparent for the user would be =20
better, and hence that default recognition of the old syntax would =20
spare some headaches to come.

A second alternative solution: have TeXShop, when opening a file =20
using the old syntax, (1) detect this syntax and interpret the file =20
content properly, (2) display a dialog telling an old syntax has been =20=

detected, that conversion is necessary and asking for permission to =20
do so, (3) in case the answer is yes change the required lines to the =20=

new syntax and finally (4) make sure that when the file will be saved =20=

the proper encoding will be used.

It rather was -- I don't think that there are still pure DOS users
without any Windows. emTeX was ported to MS-Windows as WinEmTeX, but
this diskettes based distribution too is dead since some years.

html makes tex4ht produce html 4 output with css mark up, i believe.
you can actually specify the level of html like this:

htlatex yourlatexdoc "html,3.2"

or

htlatex yourlatexdoc "html,4"

Yes, Eitan has been trying to get me to read that for years now. So I
have finally started doing it. :)

I don't know of anything else.

TeX4ht has output options for open office, xml, xhtml, docbook and
probably other things. The home page is here:

http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/

The documentation is very thorough, but a bit over my head.

Basically I use it with custom configuration files. Output of one
file is mostly html 3.2 with no CSS. The other as some CSS. You put
these config files in the local texmf and call them in place of
"html" for example, a config file named simplehtml.cfg is called like
this:

htlatex yourlatexdoc "simplehtml,3.2"

You can break up your output into separate files by adding numbers to
the command line:

htlatex yourlatexdoc "simplehtml,3.2,2"

creates new files for each \section and \subsection, i think.

htlatex yourlatexdoc "simplehtml,3.2,3"

creates new files for each \section, \subsection and \subsubsection.

Here is the souce for simplehtml.cfg and howto.cfg, the later uses
some CSS. Both of these config files are for specialized use and
probably of limited value other than being examples. I am not an
expert at this. But reading along with the "info" output may be of
some value. Eitan provides me with more support than he probably
should, for which i am very grateful.

Now i would like to compile only the files f1 and f5. \newcommand{\set}{1,5} I try to modify an example of the Guide to Latex (fourth Edition Kopka-Daly ) page 439 this example uses internal commands and : "Since they are still internal commands, they are not guaranteed for all future updates". \newcommand{\set}{start,middle,end} \@for \xx:=3D\set \do {This is the \xx.} but this example don't work :( problem with \@for I search an answer... Namely, =20= create a master file of the form \documentclass{report} \includeonly{f1,f2,f4,f5} %\includeonly{f1,f5} \begin{document} \include{f1} \include{f2} \include{f4} \include{f5} \end{document} In case you want to compile only f1 and f5, comment out the first =20 \includeonly and uncomment the second. TeX has changed its behaviour, especially because there now only is one main engine which is used for both pdfTeX and (almost) all other TeXs: pdfetex I am unable to give generic TeX support to all users out there. In short: replace \magnification=3D\magstep3 by \mag=3D\magstep3 \input pdftexconfig \hsize=3D210truemm \advance\hsize by-2truein \vsize=3D297truemm \advance\vsize by-2.1truein The \hsize and \vsize here are for A4 paper, assuming 1-inch wide =20 margins (with additional 0.1 inch for the footer) which is plain =20 TeX's default. The idea is that, after setting a magnification using TeX's primitive =20= \mag, you need to reset not only \hsize and \vsize in true units, as =20 does plain TeX's \magnification macro, but also the pdfTeX-specific =20 parameters \pdfpageheight and \pdfpagewidth which define the mediabox =20= (the size of the sheet of paper) and possibly also \pdfhorigin and =20 \pdfvorigin. The file pdftexconfig.tex (actually /Library/teTeX/share/=20= texmf.gwtex/tex/generic/config/pdftexconfig.tex) does this, and =20 contains values defined when installing gwTeX (when you chose the =20 paper size). As your PATH is erroneous, htlatex cannot start the programs. "which" can tell you if it is found. $ which tex4ht /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/tex4ht My guess: there is a second very old TeX on your system without TeX4ht and while the i-Package got installed correctly, the TeX you are actually using is another one. Try which tex on the command line to find out which one you are actually using. And check your environment because it is causing your problems. The command env tells you what is in there.
