Everything compiles properly and works properly unless I have in my
preamble \usepackage{hyperref}. In this case when I post-process the
resulting pdf file I get the java exceptions:

This is PPower4 version 0.8.4.

Subject: Headers with pdfscreen?
From: "Ralph Poellath"

Hi,

does anyone know wether or not it's possible to use headers with
pdfscreen? I need headers at the same position in every slide, and I
just can't get it to work. Is this a limitation of pdfscreen or my
stupidity?

Also, if someone has any idea on how to implement my own color scheme
for pdfscreen, I'd appreciate a hint.

Thanks,
-Ralph.

Any help for the following question would be greatly appreciated- thanks,
John MacGillivray

I'm running TeXShop 1.19 on my PowerBook (running OS 10.1.5) which I
bought earlier this year and i'm using the TeX and Ghostscript option in
TeXShop so that
I can import .eps figures. I'm also using the epsfig package for
including the .eps files.
For the most part i'm doing fine with this system - except with some
mathematica generated .eps files.

Below is the error message when I compiled a Latex file called Sri.tex
in TexShop using the
Tex and Ghostscript compiling method option (under "Typeset" in the main
menu):

### /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/dvips -R -u

I looked at the http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/ site and found some info
in the digests.
The MacOSX-TeX Digest #64 says that if fink was installed and that the
installation included
fink's tetex, that this would possibly cause problems with TeXShop and
mathematical fonts.
A friend who installed fink for me, says fink did not install tetex
---he checked it out.
So I don't think that the problem i'm experiencing is a fink/TeXShop
conflict.

On Wolfram website my advisor found a document that addresses issues with
mathematica generated latex files having problem when tetex operates on
them
...i went through the procedure but it didn't help. The web page for
this document
is
http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/interface/export/tetexconfig.html
This document was from 1999, but since it seemed to directly address the
problems
I am having I tried it out.
Note that the directories for files in the web page didn't correspond to
the directories
where my files were, so i needed to be careful to change some things to
fit the configuration
of files on my system:
On my system tetex is in /usr/local, NOT /usr/share/texmf as in the web
document.
On my system the mathematica path is /Applications/Mathematica 4.1.app
NOT /usr/local/mathematica
as in the web document, etc.

The list of steps i took, given in the web page were (note that the
items in double parenthesis
were things we did after we ran through all the steps-- but these didn't
resolve the problem):

1 copy the mathematica virtual fonts package that accompanies
mathematica 4 into the TeX directory tree.

cd /usr/local
cp -r /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/* ./
((which might have been wrong, so i also copied these to
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf using
sudo cp -r /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Includefiles/TeX/texmf/* ./))

2. Open the master TeX configuration file
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf in a text editor and change
the
kpathsea variable TEXPSHEADERS so that it includes the path to the Type
1 Math fonts in the
Mathematica directory tree. I changed the texmf.cnf file to have the
line

TEXPSHEADERS      =3D
.;$TEXMF/{dvips,pdftex,tex,fonts/type1}//;/Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/Type1

3. Merge the contents of
/Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/dvips/init/wolfram.map
into the dvips file psfonts.map. This is done by creating a symbolic
link in
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/config.

cd /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/config
sudo ln -s /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/dvips/init/wolfram.map
./wolfram.map

((we also tried another link to wolfram.map. we removed the link above
and created the one below...
cd /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/config
sudo ln -s ../init/wolfram.map ./wolfram.map))

Afterwards I opened the file
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/config/updmap in vi and altered it so
a line read

extra_modules=3D"
wolfram.map
"

Then i ran updmap by doing
cd /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/config
./updmap

This was supposed to make the Mathematica Type 1 fonts available to
dvips and other applications that use
these configuration files.

4. Finally, I Updated the kpathsea filename database ls-R (whatever
that is!) by running the shell script
named "texhash". The web page says that this configuration uses TeX's
virtual font mechanism to access
the Type 1 Math fonts that ship with Mathematica.

The above steps didn't help. I latexed my document afterwards with the
same problem...

There is a link to wolfram.map in the directory
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/config

I also see the file wolfram.map when i list the files in the directory
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.macosx/dvips/config

A third directory with dvips/config is
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/dvips/config
but this directory only has a file config.ps in it. I don't have
wolfram.map or a link
to wolfram.map in that directory...

At this point I am befuddled!

This is not an answer to your problem, but I do suggest upgrading your
TeX (not TeXShop as the newer versions are for Mac OS X 10.2 only).
Dvips 5.86f still has some bugs and problems.

Then, when you have updated your TeX, you need to run

	sudo updmap --enable Map worlfram.map

on the command line.

The answer to your problem probably is that you need to install
Mathematica fonts in some proper place (probably in

	~/Library/texmf/fonts

But since nobody has convinced Wolfram yet that it is a good idea to
give me a free Mathematica copy so that i can support the
Mathematica/TeX combo, I cannot tell you what and how.

G

PS. If Mathematica font stuff is always installed in some default
location and someone can tell me what that is, i might be able to
handle Mathematica font support completely in TeX's configuration. Or,
of course, if Wolfram sends me a free copy ;-)

I'm trying to get minitoc to work on OzTex 5.0.1 under Mac OS 10.2.1 in
a documentclass{book}

I don't think the \usepackage{minitoc} is recognized, but the error is
reported in the body on \dominitoc and \minitoc. Maybe I'm not
correctly declaring the \usepackage argument - the related file seems
to be minitoc-hyper.sty in Tex/Inputs/LaTex/hyperref?

The message below seems to indicate that the problem is not with the =20
Mathematica figures you are including, but with your .tex file itself: =20=

aren't you using a package which calls Mathematica fonts?

One thing re the figures: I think the epsfig package is deprecated, to =20=

be sure it isn't the cause of your problem (creating incorrect PS code) =20=

you might try switching to the standard LaTeX packages graphics or =20
graphicx, and see whether the problem persists.

Another thing: I often include Mathematica figures in papers, doing =20
this: (i) save them as .eps files from Mathematica, (ii) drag them onto =20=

TeXShop to convert them to .pdf files, (iii) include them in my LaTeX =20=

papers with the graphics package and TeXShop in pdfTeX mode. Generally =20=

this works.

Do you have somewhere a simple test file exhibiting your problem?

I think the Mathematica fonts are free (they were created as part of =20
Wolfram Research's initiative for promoting the MathML standard, if I'm =20=

not mistaken), and are available at:

http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/systems/unix/general/=20
manualfontdownload.html

See also:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts

Some instructions for installing them in teTeX (though largely =20
outdated) are at:

http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/interface/export/tetexconfig.html

In my case (but it's Mathematica 4.1.app for now, barring the unlikely =20=

possibility that Santa brings a 4.2 update in his basket), the =20
different elements are:

- AFM files in /Applications/Mathematica\ 4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/AFM/

- DFONT file /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/Macintosh/MathFonts.dfont

- PS files in /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/Type1/

- MAP file /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/dvips/init/wolfram.map

- TFM files in /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/fonts/tfm/wolfram/

- VF files in /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/fonts/vf/wolfram/

- LaTeX 2.09 style /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/notebook.sty

- LaTeX 2e package (STY and FD files) in /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/tex/latex/wolfram/

- documentation file /Applications/Mathematica\ =20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/doc/wolfram/msymdoc.tex

That said I've never tried installing or using them with TeX.

Hope this helps,

Bruno Voisin=

OK I've just tried this and it works reasonably well:

- Copy the PFA files from /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/AFM/ in ~/Library/texmf/fonts/type1/wolfram/

- Copy the TFM files from /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/fonts/tfm/wolfram/ in
~/Library/texmf/fonts/tfm/wolfram/

- Copy the VF files from /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/fonts/vf/wolfram/ in
~/Library/texmf/fonts/vf/wolfram/

- Copy the LaTeX 2e package from /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/tex/latex/wolfram/ in
~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/wolfram/

- Run from Terminal.app the command (without the quotes) "sudo updmap
--enable Map wolfram.map" (this MAP file is already including in teTeX,
as /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/misc/wolfram.map). That's for a
recent teTeX, I'm not sure this command works with older versions, the
script updmap has changed recently.

Then I've been able to typeset the documentation file
/Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/doc/wolfram/msymdoc.tex in
pdfTeX mode in TeXShop (ignoring the error message about redefining
\Vec), the Mathematica fonts show up well.

If I understood well, the package notebook allows typesetting
Mathematica notebooks in LaTeX. Never tried it though, I'm afraid LaTeX
wouldn't like it, some of my notebooks are up to 15 Mb in size each !

Thank you for your reply...

The message below seems to indicate that the problem is not
with the Mathematica figures you are including, but with your .tex
file itself: aren't you using a package which calls Mathematica fonts?

I'm not an expert at the behind the scenes functioning of LaTeX...so i
don't want to say too much. I believe that

at some point when i compile the LaTeX document the figure is
requiring a font (Math1Mono.pfa) which isn't

a standard font that tetex recognizes. The procedure I went though
tries to make available to tetex those=3D20

Mathematica fonts. The fonts are indeed on my machine, it's a matter
of getting tetex to recognize them.

One thing re the figures: I think the epsfig package is
deprecated, to be sure it isn't the cause of your problem (creating
incorrect PS code) you might try switching to the standard LaTeX
packages graphics or graphicx, and see whether the problem persists.

Another thing: I often include Mathematica figures in papers, doing=3D20
this: (i) save them as .eps files from Mathematica, (ii) drag them
onto TeXShop to convert them to .pdf files, (iii) include them in my
LaTeX papers with the graphics package and TeXShop in pdfTeX mode.
Generally this works.

Below is the error message when I compiled a Latex file
called Sri.tex in TexShop using the

Tex and Ghostscript compiling method option (under "Typeset" in the=3D20
main menu):

### /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/dvips -R -u=3D20

Do you have somewhere a simple test file exhibiting your problem?

PS. If Mathematica font stuff is always installed in some default=3D20
location and someone can tell me what that is, i might be able to=3D20
handle Mathematica font support completely in TeX's configuration. =
Or,=3D20=3D

of course, if Wolfram sends me a free copy ;-)

I think the Mathematica fonts are free (they were created as part of=3D20
Wolfram Research's initiative for promoting the MathML standard, if
I'm not mistaken), and are available at:

http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/systems/unix/general/
manualfontdownload.html

See also:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts

Some instructions for installing them in teTeX (though largely=3D20
outdated) are at:

http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/interface/export/tetexconfig.html

In my case (but it's Mathematica 4.1.app for now, barring the =
unlikely=3D20=3D

possibility that Santa brings a 4.2 update in his basket), the=3D20
different elements are:

- AFM files in /Applications/Mathematica\
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/AFM/

- DFONT file /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/Macintosh/MathFonts.dfont

- PS files in /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/Fonts/Type1/

- MAP file /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/dvips/init/wolfram.map

- TFM files in /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/fonts/tfm/wolfram/

- VF files in /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/fonts/vf/wolfram/

- LaTeX 2.09 style /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/notebook.sty

- LaTeX 2e package (STY and FD files) in /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/tex/latex/wolfram/

- documentation file /Applications/Mathematica\=3D20
4.1.app/SystemFiles/IncludeFiles/TeX/texmf/doc/wolfram/msymdoc.tex

That said I've never tried installing or using them with TeX.

Hope this helps,

Bruno Voisin

Sorry, more addenda.

(1) It seems the following step is unnecessary:

> - Run from Terminal.app the command (without the quotes) "sudo updmap
> --enable Map wolfram.map" (this MAP file is already including in
> teTeX, as /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/misc/wolfram.map). That's
> for a recent teTeX, I'm not sure this command works with older
> versions, the script updmap has changed recently.

Doing this I get afterwards, when I typeset msymdoc.tex, several
messages like:

Warning: pdftex (file
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/misc/wolfram.map): entry for `Math1'
already exists, duplicates ignored

It seems there no need to "sudo updmap --enable Map wolfram.map", as
the file /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg
contains the line "map +wolfram.map" making sure that wolfram.map is
read everytime pdfTeX is invoked.

(2) Typesetting msymdoc.tex works in TeXShop in pdfTeX mode but not in
TeX + GhostScript mode, where I get the following console output:

Output written on msymdoc.dvi (24 pages, 103336 bytes).
Transcript written on msymdoc.log.

The map entry in pdftex.cfg is possibly a leftover from the former
updmap structure. It is better to remove this and use only the new
updmap structure for maps.

If time permits, I might put this as a repair action in my TeX
configuration.

Is /Applications a fixed location for Mathematica (i.e. is there an

Gerben,

I'm affraid not. I was able to install mine in ~/Applications. Unless
they have changed this with 4.2, I imagine that you have an option of
where to install.

I guess that the original Math2-Bold.pfa is broken. First of all,
convert Math2-Bold.pfa to a human readable format with t1disasm. Then
check the line of
/CharStings 225 dict dup begin

Math2-Bold.pfa has 223 glyph but the above line says that
Math2-Bold.pfa has 225 glyph.
Next, open the disasmed Math2-Bold.pfa with a text editor and change
as following:
/CharStrings 223 dict dup begin

Finally, convert the human readable format to PFA with t1asm.

Caution should be taken when you find /.notdef. "/.notdef" is
involved.

The current version of dvipsk can handle the broken PFA fonts but the
previous version could not. We got error messages of dvips.

I know that Fontographer sometimes generate such wrong type 1 fonts.
When I use TeXtrace to generate type 1 fonts from METAFONT file and
read them with Fontographer to correct path and to add hinting, I got
Type 1 fonts which had the wrong /CharStrings line.
