This seems to depend upon the version of Ghostscript that is installed
on your machine, and called by the software that initiates the
conversion from .eps to .pdf for the images.

When I had similar problems with images for a proceedings volume,
I tried using epstopdf on different computing platforms.
Good results came from a (non-Mac) system which had Ghostscript 6.4
(or was it 6.54 ?) but bad results came from 6.0 and 7.0 .

My investigations led me to conclude that different versions
of Ghostscript have deficiencies, but perhaps of a different kind
depending upon the specific version.
So now I keep several versions of Ghostscript on the Mac,
and check the results of any conversions.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the tip! This is one of the things that I would have looked=20=

for myself, had I had (may be read as "taken") time enough to do so.=20
I've got a copy now!

Thank you very much. I'll try converting it on Windows and Unix platforms
tomorrow and see what happens.

How do you convert your eps figures to pdf? I found that if I do the=20
conversion using epstopdf I see problems similar to these you describe=20=

but if I save the figure as pdf *from inside illustrator* and then run=20=

pdflatex, the final pdf looks fine.

This is an older file that goes the route of latex->dvips->ps2pdf.
Therefore, the figures are in postscript. I should save them as pdf within
Illustrator and give that a try.

Thanks for the suggestion.
