I need to contact Enrico Franconi about an
issue relevant to this list, but all mail to every variation I can
think of of his address seems to be returned on the basis of
configuration error at his Manchester address. I would appreciate it
if he could get in touch with me and give me a valid email address.

Thanks,

From: "Richard Seguin"

Nicola,

I could have written your comments myself! 90% of my errors have to do=20=

with missing $ characters. I just opened up a document with BBEdit,=20
which colors the entire $ ... $ string green, and I have many=20
paragraphs that are more green than black. It's almost as difficult to=20=

read as if there were no coloring at all. On the other hand, when there=20=

is a missing $, coloring the whole math mode string green is the best=20
diagnostic tool. Therefore, I very much like the idea of something like=20=

a toolbar button that toggles solid green on and off.

As for your last suggestion, JEdit does this. Specifically, I have it=20
set up so that the the $ ... $ string is colored green except for math=20=

commands, which are colored blue, and the ( ) { } ^ + - =3D characters=20=

which are colored red. It would be nice to have this kind of=20
flexibility in TeXShop.

One additional suggestion: the ability to apply a color like very light=20=

grey to the entire text background so that it's easier on my eyes. This=20=

is a feature that most text editors have.

I've also recently noticed a bug. When I click on the oval button in=20
the title bar, the toolbar disappears as it should, but then the bottom=20=

of the text window moves up, yielding no net increase in text area. I=20
believe the bottom of the window is supposed to remain stationary, thus=20=

increasing the text window size.

Hi,

In a recent posting to this list Enrico Franconi mentioned that he had=20=

just moved to a new university. His signature read:

Wrapfig certainly still exists, on CTAN as
tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/other/misc/wrapfig.sty, though since
the style-file is entirely standalone -- distributed without separate
documentation -- it does look as if it's only there as part of a
larger package.

Wrapfig works rather well, in my experience. It has a rather tricky
job to do, and it doesn't always get it exactly right, but if you
follow the advice on idiosyncracies in the documentation at the _end_
of the style file, you can get the effect you want more often than not.
Its author fairly regularly answers questions about it on comp.text.tex,
so it's still supported.

All the best,

Norman

Does anyone out there prefer Plain TeX to LaTeX?
I would like to use PostScript fonts such as Utopia,
but I don't know how. I imagine it's more difficult
to do than LaTeX's \usepackage{utopia}, but I'm
hoping not _too_ much more difficult.

Please send any response to me as well as to
the list since I receive the Digest.

ImageMagick has been updated to ImageMagick 5.5.1
TeX4ht has been updated (and repaired as it contained a broken file)

To convert latex files to HTML, install Freetype, ImageMagick and
TeX4ht support, next to TeX Programs, teX Foundation and ghostscript 7
(6 is untested). Then on the command line you can run

	htlatex foo.tex

and after it has finished you can open the foo.html file.

As always: http://www.rna.nl/tex.html for instructions.

Hi there,

I haven't tried to do this for some time. Right now I can think of two=20=

solutions:

OzTeX-based
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

OzTeX has support files for precisely what you ask. It's based on using=20=

the PSNFSS (i.e. LaTeX) metrics for PS fonts, in T1 encoding, in plain=20=

TeX. There are :

- a file psnames.tex defining convenient names for the PSNFSS fonts=20
(like \def\TimesR    {ptmr8t });

- a file pstext.tex doing all the redefinitions necessary for using=20
these fonts in plain TeX (essentially adapting plain TeX to T1=20
encoding, and allowing to switch back and forth between T1 and OT1);

- a file psfonts.tex showing how PS fonts can be used.

It includes support for Utopia. I don't know to what extent it's=20
dependent on OzTeX.

LY1-based
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

Y&Y at (I've no affiliation with them, other=20
than liking their products, especially Lucida and MathTime fonts)=20
provide freely metrics for most PostScript fonts, in their own encoding=20=

called LY1 or TeX n' ANSI. Explanation of LY1 is at=20
, metrics are at=20
and support files for both LaTeX and=20=

plain TeX are at . It's all free.=20=

I think most of the support files are already in teTeX, as part of the=20=

support for MathTime fonts. In my opinion the LY1 metrics are superior=20=

to the T1 metrics (in French, at least, the spacing between words, and=20=

hyphenations, look nicer to my eye).

But in both cases you'll have to group yourself the font in families,=20
create different sizes, etc. Part of the fun of plain TeX (no irony=20
here, I do like plain TeX, and use it when I have time; it's flexible,=20=

powerful, elegant and clean).

Good luck,

Bruno Voisin

I go back and forth on that---most of my personal work has been done in
Plain though.

>to do than LaTeX's \usepackage{utopia}, but I'm

Basically it's the same as for LaTeX, one just doesn't get the NFSS, so =
one:

 - get Karl Berry's FontName scheme from CTAN
 - name one's font files appropriately
 - get FontInst
 - run a three-line .tex file in the directory where one's .afm files are
 - (optional step, tweak the .pl and .vpl files to add ligatures, adjust
things like hyphen placement, extra kerns &c.)
 - run tftopl and vftovp on the resultant .pl and .vpl files
 - move the files to the right places
 - access the font normally

For Utopia most of that probably won't be necessary, just look up its
name in FontName and access it with that, it was donated to the X
Consortium and is usually available.

Does GW teTeX have a dropcap package?

drop.sty, dropcaps.sty, initials.sty do not seem be there.

Initials says:

%% (C) Copyright 1999-2000 Frank Mittelbach
%% All rights reserved.
%%
%% Not for general distribution. In its present form it is not allowed
%% to put this package onto CD or an archive without consulting the

drop.sty and dropcaps.sty are not part of TeX Live or teTeX. There is
droppings.sty but it's license is such that it won't make it to teTeX.

Subject: i-Installer v2 RC4 release.
From: "Gerben Wierda"
Date: Sat, 23 Nov 2002 01:41:29 +0100

I have added some functionality, hence RC4 and not RC3f. There is now
some support for package dependency, that is to say, when the package
author can test availability of stuff in the scripts and RC4 offers the
option to interactively open a package form the script. The ImageMagick
package has been changed that way, if Freetype is not available, it
will warn the user and (when using i-Installer RC4) ask for opening of
the freetype package. Pretty basic. One can test this by removing the
freetype package before installing the ImageMagick package. Other
packages must still be adapted to take advantage of this.

Help is more or less complete including instructions on how to
write/create i-Packages.

Note, the Freetype i-Package has been updated.

http://www.rna.nl/ii.html for a pointer to II2.dmg

As far as I am concerned, i-Installer v2 is now done (cross my fingers
that I did not introduce a bug when changing the interaction code just
now). The only thing planned before the release of version 2.0 is the
change of the version string form "v2.0 RC4" to "v2.0". No code,
behaviour or other changes are planned.

G

PS. TeX-fat.dmg will be updated roughly 1 hour from now.
