For someone relatively new to TeX and friends I find iTeXMac to be a
little overwhelming to understand. TeXShop is small and pretty simple
to use. It has made learning TeX, LaTeX and ConTeXt somewhat do-able.
Maybe I'm just lazy.

I had these recently on another font. The warnings seem to be harmless, =
=3D20=3D

and all it does is slow up processing slightly. It just means that the =
=3D20=3D

.map files are loaded in your texmf trees twice rather than once. The =
=3D20=3D

one that is listed below is being ignored, so strictly you should be =3D20
able to take it out and the error messages will disappear. However, =3D20
these two .map files may not be identical and so you should save what =
=3D20=3D

you remove and try to find the other, in case the one that remains is =
=3D20=3D

defective in any way.

(And when you remove or put back remember to do updmap in Terminal.)

I think this cfg has its own cm-super.map addition. That was the old =20
way to do it. If you have installed the cm-super package, the generic =20=

pdftex.map has the cm-super fonts directly. So you are working with a =20=

combination of old and new style updmap solution.

Just remove the map entry from =20
/Users/jcame/Library/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg

I think this cfg has its own cm-super.map addition. That was the old
way to do it. If you have installed the cm-super package, the generic
pdftex.map has the cm-super fonts directly. So you are working with a
combination of old and new style updmap solution.

Just remove the map entry from
/Users/jcame/Library/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg

Subject: Making an Image Stay In Place
From: "Bob Kerstetter"
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 06:25:46 -0600

Have read how to do this in someplace, but cannot find it now.

When placing an image in Latex it "floats" to the next page, centering
itself on the page vertically with page breaks before and after.

It really needs to just stay in line like any other paragraph. What do
I need to do to keep it place when between paragraphs.

Here is more or less what the source looks like:

%start example source

This is the paragraph before the image.

\begin{figure}
\begin{center}
\centerline {
\includegraphics[width=3D144pt]{FileName}
}
\end{center}
\end{figure}

This is the paragraph after the image.

%end example source

Here is how I would like it to print.

This is the paragraph before the image.

IMAGE GOES HERE

This is the paragraph before after image.

Thanks

In fact if (like in your example) you *don't* need \caption and
\listoffigures, the best way to get your piscture to stay in place is to no=
t
use the figure environment at all.

Just

\begin{center}
\includegraphics[width=3D144pt]{FileName}
\end{center}

If you need captions, you should use the ccaption package, which privides a
way to obtain a caption outside of the figure environment.

\usepackage{ccaption}
\newfixedcaption{\figcaption}{figure}%%% \figcaption or anything else

...

\begin{document}
\begin{center}
\includegraphics[width=3D144pt]{FileName}
\figcaption{blah, blah, blah}
\end{center}

The [h] asks latex to place the figure "h"ere, if it can (you can also
use t or/and b for top or bottom placement). However, latex has its own
mind and doesn't always oblige. A figure is not just like any other
paragraph because it cannot be split between pages. Depending on how
you document evolves and where the figure is with respect to the page,
the placement could change.

Better is to read the arguments to the figure environment as _permissions_
rather than _instructions_. Thus [h] _permits_ LaTeX to put the figure
`here'. It also implies that if you don't want the figure here you're
not giving permission for it to be anywhere else, but that's so unlikely
to be what you want that LaTeX generally adds a `p' for you.

If what you want is a graphic in one place then (as the earlier
response mentioned) don't use the figure environment at all. If you
do need the figure to be in the same sequence as other figures, then
see  and the
advice there.

All the best,

Norman

Thank all of you for your help.

I am taking the simple way out and doing something like this:

\begin{center}
\includegraphics[options]{GraphicName}
\end{center}

Everything stays inline, or so it appears.

It works for what I need today. "Figure" was definitely moving things
around. Will have to learn how to use that tomorrow. :)

Is there someway to wrap text around a graphic in LaTeX? ConTeXt does
that, but ConTeXt is more than I can handle on the daily basis right
now.

Get a copy of teh LaTeX Companion. The teTeX distribution by Gerben has =
all the
packages you need, the companion lists them. Another worthy source is

It varies. For really complex documents where I want interaction between
figures and text, I set ``x x x...'' to fill text boxes set to
run-around the graphics in Altsys Virtuoso 2 (essentially FreeHand v4
for NeXTstep), then I dump to a PostScript file, convert that to a
line-by-line .rtf, convert that to line-by-line ASCII, then count the
``x''s to get the measurements for a series of \parshape commands.

If memory serves, Donald Arseneau has published more general macro
solutions to comp.text.tex...

Well since this topic came up I would like to address a question too. A
week ago I tried to place a figure in the text and I wanted that figure
to be placed in a specific page number. What I finally did was to put
the figure command in the .tex file at the place I wanted the figure to
appear in the text. But is there any other "nicer" way to tel TeX to
place a figure in a specified page?

Thanks

I'm not sure that I understand what you wish. If that's making a figure=20=

appear in the typeset output exactly at the same place that it was=20
included in the tex input file, there's the package "float" which adds=20=

to the normal location parameters [h], [b] and [t] of the figure=20
environment a new placement parameter [H], doing exactly that.

It's included in teTeX at=20
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/tex/latex/misc/float.sty, but the=20
documentation is missing. You can get it on CTAN in=20
tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/supported/float/, by LaTeXing=20
float.dtx.

It's indeed mentioned in chapter 6 of the LaTeX Companion. The problem=20=

with the Companion is that it's largely outdated (at least the 1994=20
printing that I own). For example ...

> Is there someway to wrap text around a graphic in LaTeX? ConTeXt does=20=

the Companion mentions two packages "floatfig" and "wrapfig" for doing=20=

this, but they do not seem to exist anymore. In teTeX there is another=20=

package /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/tex/latex/misc/floatflt.sty,=20
documented in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/doc/latex/floatflt/, which=20
apparently has taken over the "floatfig" functionality.

Godd luck!

Subject: Re: [OS X TeX] TeXShop suggestions/questions
From: "Nicola Cabibbo"
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 23:28:12 +0100

I would like to enter, even if lately, the $ coloring discussion.

Coloring of inter-$ material can be very valuable
when errors happen. Missing $ are for me the most frequent and
annoying sources of errors. They are annoying because I frequently
write paragraphs where math and normal text are frequently
alternated, and a missing $ may cause an error
at a location which can be quite a few lines removed from the
location of the missing $ itself.

On the other hand I really like the appearence of the TexShop
page as it is now, as it is very clean, and favours an undivided
attention to the content of the text.

I would thus like to be able to activate inter-$ coloring with a
switch-like device, perhaps a button, perhaps a keyboard action which
I would only use when an error arises. I other words one would have
two modes and the ability to alternate between them. This would be
more convenient than a preference setting.

An elegant solution would be to enable this colouring authomatically
with the "Go To Error" button of the console.

As a final suggestion, would it be possible to apply a special color
to inter-$ material, but still give the standard color to math commands
like \frac, etc?

    with many thanks for this beautiful and clean application!

Subject: i-Installer v2 Release candidate 3e released
From: "Gerben Wierda"
Date: Fri, 22 Nov 2002 00:03:47 +0100

I have just released an update to i-Installer. There was one item I
wanted to implement, before I finish up on the Help and documentation
(and code clean up) and move to version 2.0.

This version has a special trick on board if you want to be alerted
automatically if packages have been updated, without having to start
i-Installer itself. You can set a day/time in preferences for an
automatic check to run on your default i-Package directory. If your
system is turned on at that time, all i-packages in that directory will
be checked and if any of those have been updated, you will get a mail
message *)

Note: this uses local mail on your system, if that is not configured to
work (and I do not know if it works out of the box, my system is
heavily adapted at this point) it will proably not work.

NOTE: this version will reset your preferences to defaults the first
time you run it. Reset your directories, etc.

Downloads through: http://www.rna.nl/ii.html

*) For unix-geeks among us: It uses crontab. Run crontab -l in a
Terminal window after you have set a date/time to see what it does. If
you know what you are doing, you might copy that info to check on
different locations/packages
