Subject: Gimp-Print and Ghostscript 7?
From: "Gary L. Gray"
Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 20:31:38 -0500

In order to regain some functionality with my HP printers, I have
installed the Gimp-Print drivers for Mac OS X. On the Gimp-Print web
site:

,

it states that the package requires "ESP Ghostscript 7.05.5 for Mac OS
X".

My question is this: If I have Gerben's GS 7.05 distribution installed,
do I need to install the ESP Ghostscript mentioned on the Gimp-Print
web site? Will installing the ESP Ghostscript mess up Ghostscript for
my TeX installation? The reason I ask is because I am not entirely sure
that my Gimp-Print installation is correctly working with .ps files.

Inquiring minds would like to know.

Thank you,

Michael,

I tried the function menu, and it appears that it recognizes
\section{*}, \subsection{*}, etc., but none of the commands such as
\begin{theorem} and \begin{lemma}. :-(

Gary,

You don't need to install the ESP Ghostscript 7.05.5.
I use Gimp-Print with Gerben Wierda's Ghostscript since September and=20
all works well with my HP 970 or my Brother HL-1450.

I don=B4t know what package I need to use '\arcsec\' but without it
your snippet typesets fine here with the {scrartcl}-class.

I imagine the difference between TeXShop and the command line arises=20
because TeXShop uses by default pdfTeX as its typesetting engine (see=20
whether it is checked in the Typeset menu), and in the command line you=20=

may have used latex. If you use pdflatex in the command line, does the=20=

difference persist?

It's impossible to be more specific without knowing the packages you=20
use. What is \arcsec? Is it defined using \ensuremath? If not, does=20
your output change if you write $\arcsec$ instead?

Please suggest to support@barebones.com that they include this, I've
tried (successfully) to get them to add support for other tags ... but
since I don't write any math at all (I do actually think that I have a
f(x) =3D k + xm somewhere 8-) I haven't noticed this.

Hi Richard

If you select Show Function Prototypes in the Function Popup preference
it will show you that there is an equation, definition etc. Is that
what you wanted or did you want the statement of the definition
etc to appear ?

I hope Barebones also forwarded you the emails they have received=20
themselves regarding this topic. I sent them some wishes I had for=20
BBEdit as a LaTeX editor about half a year ago. I have never heard back=20=

from them, though (I actually did not expect to). I would like to=20
present what I think would make BBEdit a good LaTeX editor to this=20
list, because I hope other people will like some of it. I really think=20=

it would be good if as many people as possible would write to=20
Barebones. And may be somebody else has a better way of explaining the=20=

things to the folks at Barebones than I do, so that they will better=20
understand why a certain feature is necessary and how it should be=20
implemented.

I guess that many of the following features will remind people of=20
Alpha. This is, of course, not a conincidence, because I have used=20
Alpha under MacOS 9 for a long time. I must admit that I just cannot=20
get used to AlphaTk, but I do hope that AlphaX will finally come out=20
with a compelling interface and features.

So how about BBEdit? I have been using BBEdit as a HTML editor, and I=20
am very happy with it. Basically, all that a good "LaTeX mode" would=20
have to do is copy some of the features implemented for HTML editing:

- Better syntax coloring. First of all, I think, a unique place for=20
setting syntax coloring (right now, it is under the preferences and=20
under the TeX mode menu). I think this would be good for all other=20
modes, too, for that matter. As for the coloring itself: coloring of=20
strings in inline math modes (between $ and others). I guess that some=20=

people would also like to have other mathematical environments in=20
general completely colored, I think. Coloring of brackets. Different=20
coloring of all sectioning commands.

- A menu and a palette to insert TeX Commands similar to their HTML=20
menu and HTML palette. It would be nice to have some sort of=20
intelligent insertion (like placing the cursor in the brackets of a=20
\command{} etc.), and configurable keyboard shortcuts.

- A mechanism similar to "close current tag" that would for example=20
insert \end{current_environment} to the current environment.

- Syntax checking would be cool.

- Collapsable/expandable sections. This would definitely be a really=20
cool one. Not only would you have something like tags that you can move=20=

to in a document, but it would also allow you to display only those=20
sections you are actually working on.

Any more ideas?
Holger

Howdy,

There is a TeX Tool that came with BBEdit 6.5 and later that will turn on
syntax coloring for in-line math. Certainly not everything and not very
sophisticated.

Try the LaTeX Glossary by Gianluca Gorni found on the BareBones site. It =
has
almost all the LaTeX commands as glossary entries (which can be edited,
since they are simple text files, and assigned to keys - I use control key
combinations). Glossary entries can have embedded commands for placing the
selection, placing the cursor, etc.

The only thing I really wish BBEdit had was command completion so I could
make extensible commands rather than special keystrokes for each command I
use often.

Good Luck,

I think this only works for $$ though ... but I may be wrong. I cannot
check it right now.

Thanks for the pointer to the LaTex glossary.

Subject: TeXShop bug related to selecting an unmatched brace
From: "Bruno Voisin"
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 21:10:57 +0100

Hi there,

Three times today, and sometimes in the past, I have experienced
TeXShop crashes which I think are bugs. This happened in TeXShop editor
as I had just selected an unmatched brace (, and was about to paste
some text (Cmd-V) on it. I'm not sure it's fully reproducible.

By the way, in the list of suggestions for possible TeXShop
improvement: please, please, please, give the user the possibility to
disactivate the automatic selection of the matching brace and of all
the text in between when one brace (parenthesis, square bracket, curly
brace) is selected.

Very often, when editing a mathematical formula, I select a brace of
one type to transform it into a brace of another type; doing this I
realize after a few seconds (or more) that I have replaced not only the
former brace, but also the matching brace and all the text in between,
by the new brace I have just typed. Most of the type I realize the
error in time for going back to the previous situation with a
reasonable number of Cmd-Shift-Z, sometimes it's too late and the
modifications were saved in the meantime.

Please... (If I had a picture of Calvin's eyes when he's telling this,
I would add it here.)

Subject: TeX Programs and TeX Programs (Experimental) i-Packages + ALERT
From: "Gerben Wierda"
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 21:37:45 +0100

There has been a change in setup for TeX Programs as distributed by me.

From now on, there are *two* i-Packages for TeX Programs
- TeX Programs
- TeX Programs (Experimental)

TeX Programs is the package to use if you require stability. It is
drawn from the stable 'source' repository of TeX Live. The TeX Programs
i-package used to be drawn from source.development when it looked like
that repository was fairly stable. I have returned to the source
repository for this. Version:
	pdfTeX (Web2C 7.3.7x) 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020211

TeX Programs (Experimental) is drawn from TeX Live's source.development
repository and as such it is a snapshot of work in progress, rightly
called 'bleeding edge'. Current version:
	pdfTeX (Web2C 7.3.11) 3.14159-1.10a-beta-20021118

Both are available through i-Installer's Known Packages menu. Both will
contain up-to-date versions of my own stuff (like altpdftex). One can
easily switch between both by just installing one on top of the other.

ALERT************

I just noticed that the texbinaries package configuration does not
work! Probably a mismatch between older TeX and newer texconfig/fmtutil.

I will look into this. In the mean time, the experimental package
*should* work
