In using

TeXShop 1.20; teTex; TeX+Ghoscript; boxedeps

to typeset documents with illustrations in eps format, I occasionally
get flawed pdfs in which symbols fail to appear in the eps
illustrations. These include superscript, equals signs, and upper case
symbols from the \cal font. Empty outline boxes sometimes appear in the
screen image in place of the missing symbol, but these boxes do not
appear in printed output. The epss were generated in Adobe Illustrator.
All symbols appear flawlessly in the pdfs generated from Illustrator
using the same eps source. So there is something amiss in the pdf
generation in the TeXShop/teTex system.

Diagnoses? Cures?

Thanks,

David Oliver

Hi. I need a TeX-savvy editor for OS 10.2, and emacs looks good. But the
carbon-emacs binaries I've tried (v21.3.50: from Enrico
Franconi and from Alex Rice) are unable to launch TeX, BibTeX, etc
(although otherwise they're great). For both binaries any TeX process
terminates with the message
that it "exited abnormally with code 1". According to the info pages this =
could
be caused by a problem with the 'env' program not being properly =
installed. env
is however inside the emacs binary (attested to run on OS 10.2) so I guess
is not the cause of my problem (?). I get the same result on two different
machines (the only peculiarity they have in common is that each has =
XFree86
installed). I'm
using Gerben Wierda's teTex and can compile and typeset from the terminal
(outside emacs). Can I make this work without resorting to building my own
(which I'm not yet set up to do)? Ideally I'd like to run emacs with
auctex, reftex, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Folks

This is slightly off-topic I know but is anyone else seeing a quite
different screen display under this new 10.2.2. My screen looks as
though the contrast has been heightened and sharpened. It is changing
the readability level of the TeXShop pdf display. My computer now looks
as I might feel after a Very good night's sleep.

Cocaspell seems to have gone west in the process however.

Since this Emacs doesn't start up in a shell you need to set the PATH
environment variable globally. The way I know to do this is by creating
a file:
~/.MacOSX/environment.plist
My file looks like this:

         HOME
         /Users/nillius
         PATH

.:/usr/bin:/usr/athena/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/local/
sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/arla/bin:/usr/arla/sbin:/usr/
local/bin:/usr/local/bin:/Applications/MATLAB6p5/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/
bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current

This is how I do it. There might be a better way that I am not aware of.

Hi:

I have create a shell script to use my private format file. It is
called pdfreactores and it simply contains the line:
pdftex \&pdfreactores $1
I can launch it from the command line with no problem:
./pdfreactores somefile.tex

However, when I try from TeXShop, the console opens but stays empty,
the beach ball rolls forever and I have to kill with cmd+esc.

Why? What's wrong?

I have the complete path to the script in the preferences.

Two further questions:

How do I specify the current file to this script? Or more options?

How do I know and control the current directory when the script is
launched?

Thanks,

Paulo

Look at "font smoothing style" in the General System Preferences pane.
New with 10.2, maybe, you can select it or let the software choose the
"best" display method.

It would make it a bit easier for me to keep track of what files I
have downloaded if the file names included the version number such as
texshop_1.24.dmg rather than just texshop.dmg, though I do understand the
desire to minimize the edits to the web pages. Without such a naming
scheme, in order to find out exactly what files you are getting, one needs
to download and unpack the files.

With that complaint aside, "great work!" to Richard for putting
this software together for us all.

If you can take a shot at it, see

Some pdf's don't work very well with Ghostscript. So, what I do is print=20=

the PDF to a postscript file FROM Preview NOT Acrobat. Then I use=20
"pstotext" to convert the postscript file to text. I'm not quite sure=20
how I got "pstotext" ... probably Fink. Command-line Postcript utilities=20=

are very useful to have around in any case ...

The problems with the above approach is that special characters are=20
omitted.

To get around this, you could copy&paste page-by-page from the free=20
Acrobat. Very time-consuming, but free. Character substitution to ASCII=20=

is better. The paid Acrobat, of course, has a text export ...

Which IME bites. It does one line at a time....

Far better (but commercial, well shareware) is Marcel Weiher's wonderful
TextLightning.app (www.metaobject.com)

(ob. discl. I was a beta-tester and got a free license for that, but no
other association besides considering Marcel a way cool guy and friend)

It parses the placement of the text on the page, and the style(s) to
(attempt, pretty successfully) to make sensible paragraphs of the text.

If you have the developer tools, you may try (from the command line)
  cvs -d:pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/emacs login
  cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/emacs co -D
2002-11-01 emacs
  cd emacs
  ./configure --with-carbon --without-x
  make bootstrap
  sudo make install

Let me know how it works. No luck here, but I mangled a few things. I
stole this from the carbon emacs page.

The current CVS code does not bootstrap correctly. It has already been
reported in gnu.emacs.help.

As soon as emacs will be compilable again, I'll pack a new
distribution, including few bug fixes.

cheers

Bootstraps fine. ;)

Following what I posted, and making sure fink isn't in your path, I got
it to build just a few minutes ago. For the anxious,
http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/carbonemacs.dmg

It should be finished uploading about 20 min after you receive this
message.

I hacked some of Enrico's stuff into this file, but who knows how well
I did, seems to work ok. Consider this a crutch (like all of my
software ;) ).

I have succeed to build the emacs (21.3.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin6.2) )
under MacOSX 10.2.2 (the newest one) following the instruction exactly.
Thank you.

is built and up. Don't get it unless you can't wait for Enrico. He will
do a nice job of it (like actually including bug fixes).
