Folks,
I apologize if this is a bit off topic. I've recently tried to open a
postscript file using gs at the command line. I'm running X with Orobor on
top and OS10.1.5. I can open the file by dropping it into TeXShop. The =

That 's true...
I tried to do the same in my system (the same as yours) and and i got
the same exact message. Well... in any case just remember the command
line
ps2pdf
to make postscripts to pdfs....

	Hello Cyril, all this info is very enlightening. Today I was=20
debating myself with a friend on the pros and cons of using Unicode and=20=

all this talk about it has left me wondering about it. Is there a way to=20=

get the Mac OS to automatically encode all text files in Unicode or is=20=

that a text editor related feature? Can it be done through TeXShop? What=20=

does exactly the line "%!iTeXMac(charset): UTF-8" do, is it exclusive to=20=

iMacTeX or does it force editors in general to encode in Unicode?

	On the other hand, what exactly is lambda and how do I use it? I=20=

know you told me you are not that much of a master on it but if you got=20=

it to work then you certainly know more about it than me! Can lambda=20
just typeset any LaTeX document without a hiccup as if it were a natural=20=

replacement? And finally, why would I use it instead of LaTeX?

	Thanks for the info again and please excuse the endless row of=20=

questions!

	Regards,...

I didn't see an "unsubscribe" option, so I hope this works. I'm just an
end-user (not a developer) and the digest is way more than I need. So
please remove me from the subscription list.

The encoding used when saving your files is editor-related. Last I=20
looked TeXShop could not save files using UTF-8, which is why I looked=20=

again at iMacTeX. J=E9r=F4me Laurens kindly explained how to do it in =
his=20
email dated Oct. 15 2002 on this list, ie to use the string=20
%!iTeXMac(charset): UTF-8.

Lambda is a replacement for LaTeX, and compiles all the LaTeX files=20
without hiccups. Just type lambda file.tex instead of latex file.tex.=20
You would need to use it in order to produce files in various scripts=20
(Arabic, Thai, Japanese etc.) using Unicode encodings. I use it to have=20=

readable Sanskrit transliteration in my files, and to be able to work=20
on my files both on my FreeBSD laptop and my OS X desktop.
If you're just thinking about getting accents in your text without=20
sharing the source, it is probably overkill. Use the encoding lines=20
others have given. These allow you to use the accents directly and not=20=

as TeX macros, which is way faster to type (I did a set of macros in=20
Nisus Writer to change from "normal accented" input to the full blown=20
TeX macros before I used Omega).=

Subject: Incorrect Tags menu in TeXShop
From: "Bruno Voisin"
Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 08:55:51 +0100

Has anyone else seen this bug in TeXShop: for a LaTeX document,
prepared in a publisher's article class (jfm.cls, based on
article.cls), some of the subsections don't show up in the Tags menu.

They are entered in the standard LaTeX way, with \section and inside a
section several \subsection. For example:

\section{Waves from an extended source} -> Show up in Tags
\subsection{The real-space way}				-> Show up
\subsection{The Fourier-space way}			-> Don't show up
\subsection{Structure of the wave field}		-> Don't show up
\subsection{The pulsating sphere}			-> Show up
\subsection{The Gaussian monopole}			-> Show up
\section{Waves from an unsteady source} -> Show up
\subsection{The temporal way}				-> Show up
\subsection{The Fourier-space way}			-> Don't show up
\subsection{Structure of the wave field}		-> Don't show up
\section{Waves in a viscous fluid}			-> Show up
\subsection{The Fourier-space way}			-> Show up
\subsection{Structure of the wave field} -> Show up

and so forth. I couldn't see any logical pattern in it.

Though the document started its life in Textures and is now worked over
in TeXShop, I used BBEdit to make sure that all line breaks are of the
same type (\n, UNIX-style now, as TeXShop expects).

Is this a reported bug?

Bruno

Have you checked that there are no spaces on the left of the '\'. I have
noticed that TeXShop doesn't pick up any section or subsections if there =
are
spaces left of them.

I have seen it once, when writing a report for a programming course. I
had several sections like contain sometimes a subsection with the same
name as in a previous section, so it looked basically like this:
\section{Problems}
\subsection{Bandwidth of a laser pulse}
blah
\section{Solutions}
\subsection{Bandwidth of a laser pulse}
blah

It turned out that subsections with the same name didn't turn up in the
Tags menu, which is, actually not really strange, since the same entry
than would refer to two different places in the document.
The problem you see is then just a logical problem, and the solution
would be to put %1, %2 etc after the (sub)section entry and add just an
extra empty line after the entry. I think this solves the problem,
since TeXShop puts the entire line into the tags menu.

I just tested this solution and it worked for me...

Kind Regards, Aart-Jan

Thanks Ben, but I haven't found any space there. In BBEdit I checked=20

Thanks. Your diagnostic, and solution, are perfectly correct. I would=20
never have thought of this. I was accustomed to Alpha's tags button,=20
which has no problem with duplicated section names.

Hi Bruno

If I open the following in TeXShop:

----------------------

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}

\section{Waves from an extended source}			%->  1.
\subsection{The real-space way}				%->  2.
\subsection{The Fourier-space way}			%->  3.
\subsection{Structure of the wave field}    		%->  4.
\subsection{The pulsating sphere}			%->  5.
\subsection{The Gaussian monopole}			%->  6.
\section{Waves from an unsteady source}			%->  7.
\subsection{The temporal way}				%->  8.
\subsection{The Fourier-space way}			%->  9.
\subsection{Structure of the wave field}		%-> 10.
\section{Waves in a viscous fluid}			%-> 11.
\subsection{The Fourier-space way}			%-> 12.
\subsection{Structure of the wave field}    		%-> 13.

\end{document}

----------------------
( I put the numbers in to make it easy to check what was missing.)

I can see all the tags. Can you see them ? I am wondering
if its the subsections causing the problem or because there
is other material in between.

Actually the first time I looked at this document it didn't
show all the subsections (but a different set missing to
what you had!) and then when I closed and re-opened they were all there.

Thanks Michael, actually the problem has just been solved by Aart-Jan=20
Verhoef who pointed out that it was caused by duplicated subsection=20
names. Adding, as you essentially did, different numbers %1, %2 at the=20=

end of the lines with the \subsection commands is precisely the=20
solution he suggested.

Still, I wonder what may be the technical difference between Alpha's=20
tag mechanism, which has no problem with duplicated section names, and=20=

TeXShop's mechanism.

I see that nobody here has suggested metapost.

It is designed for integration with the various TeX's. It is a very good
package that has had many enhancements added recently by Hans Hagen =
directed
for Context but the pictures can be used in Latex etc. The book on this is
at

http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/metafun-p.pdf

It only tells you half of what it can do.

Happy reading

Has anyone gotten the X-Symbol package working with Emacs (not
XEmacs)?

I have installed it, but I don't seem du be able to get any decoding
of LaTeX-files.

Any ideas? Maybe you need to run it in X-Windows for the fonts?

Because in the first case it is a clickable link. It would also be if you
used hyperrref in the second example (hyperref is loaded by pdfscreen).

Alpha adds whitespace to the tags to differentiate them.
