Thanks for all the help. I don't mind italic pound signs, so MB's=20
solution 1 works for me for now.

On the other hand, I'd like to understand what's going on. If you could=20=

tell me the right
document to read to find out

(a) how to specify an encoding
(b) what the encodings are and why
(At least, I think an encoding maps glyph shapes to order number in an=20=

array, but why are there
several encodings?)
(c) what a ui version of a font is
- I installed all the postscript bembo I had: roman, italic, semibold=20
and semibolditalic, bold and bolditalic.

I would be most grateful.

Thanks !

TeXShop typing has been agonizingly slow for me with syntax coloring=20
turned on ever since I upgraded to Jaguar. For the last couple of weeks=20=

I've been using the open source (programmer's) text editor called=20
JEdit, and I've been very happy with it. It does a beautiful job of=20
color syntaxing LaTeX. Even though JEdit is an application written in=20
Java, it's a double-clickable application, and is very responsive on my=20=

PowerBook G4 (550 MHz). I can hardly tell the difference between it and=20=

a native application. It has a configurable tool bar, split windows,=20
font smoothing, recordable macros, and other nice stuff. The default=20
colors used for syntaxing were lousy though, and I've changed most of=20
them, and the font was also set to bold for many of the colors, which=20
looked ugly, but changing everything to normal text cleared that up. I=20=

used the built in plug-in manager to download plugins, several of which=20=

give different styles of tabbed buffers. There's also a plugin called=20
XInsert that opens in a separate window and contains a large amount of=20=

LaTeX syntax listed in a tree stucture -- clicking on an item inserts=20
it into your text. If anyone is interested, there's more to say about=20
this editor.

The slowness may have to do with the new font anti-aliasing that
is done in Jaguar. I have noticed that the terminal program for
one becomes unusable if both ansi colouring and anti-aliasing is
turned on. Once the two are used the performance of that terminal
in particular is agonizingly slow. Try turning anti-aliasing off
and see what happens.

Subject: i-installer MD5 checksum errors
From: "Dr. Paul Fons"
Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 16:45:51 +0900

First off, let me thank you for all your efforts for the macintosh TeX
community. I wanted to ask if the MD5 checksum error I am receiving is
a result of a bad upload or a problem on my end. Using RC3b
i-installer, I upgraded my tex package to the latest version (this was
about a week ago). Just of our curiosity, I downloaded the new version
i-installer and found when I attempt to update, my texmf package using
the package:
            http://www.math.utah.edu/ftp/pub/i-packages/texmf.ii2

I received the error
The check of the remote package md5 checksum failed.

This happened for both the TeX Foundation package and TeX program
packages (http://www.math.utah.edu/ftp/pub/i-packages/texbinaries.ii2)
for both the yale and utah servers (I tried both). Any idea of what
might be happening? Thanks.

If you have installed Wierda's recent distribution and run his
configuration script, all I can think is

1) Do you have a mixture of Wierda's and fink distributions of TeX?

2) Where is the .dvi file you try to view located? I mean ---is it in a
write-protected directory? For example, a .dvi file inside
/usr/local/teTeX... If so, you have to copy it to your Desktop or any
other folder in your Home.

If neither is the case, I suggest you to inform Mr. Wierda about your
setup, so he can help you.

A possible reason is that there is a cache between you and where your
are downloading from and this cache is misbehaving. It is offering you
an old version of the checksum or the table of contents even if there
is a new version available *and* it is instructed by i-Installer to
ignore caching (check your preferene setting on this).

An other possible reason is that you have been trying to update while
the package was being updated. There is a protection against this in
i-Installer, but this depends on the packages being downloaded in a
certain way, and I haven't implemented that here yet. But if this is
reproducable (i.e. it happens when you hit update again say 5 minutes
later) this is not the cause.

It is as far as I know impossible for there to be another cause.
i-Installer downloads the new table of contents and saves this
(reporting download or writ errors along the way). Then it checks the
new table of contents (which has been downloaded) against the remote
md5 checksum.

I think the Fink project is really great, but Gerben Wierda's=20
distribution of TeX is by far the best for Mac OS X.

If you want to use Wierda's distribution, I suggest you uninstall=20
Fink's TeX packages. It is very easy if you use the Fink Commander,=20
which you can find at http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/=20
-->Engines-->Fink-->Fink Commander.

(If you have packages like Lyx or TeXmacs, you will have to uninstall=20
these before, because of the dependencies of these and other packages=20
to TeX. But it is better to start at the root, that is ---to try to=20
uninstall TeX first, then Fink will tell you which packages depend on=20
TeX.)

Another advantage of Wierda's distribution is that with Fink you have=20
to install by pieces ---for example, tetex-texmf, tetex-macosx, pdftex,=20=

pdfslide, pdfscreen, ghostscript, etc.; whereas with Wierda's=20
distribution you can download his TeX-fat.dmg and it will install=20
everything you need, and then with his i-installer you can install=20
other software as well as keep up-to-date the main TeX distribution.

If ---again, *if*--- you want to install Wierda's distribution, follow=20=

his instructions as to where you should install your personal files in=20=

your Home directory.

I've done a bit of digging and I think that `ui' means `unslanted
italic'. Which would make sense in the context.

IMHO I think that if you're going to use Bembo seriously you should
invest in the expert fonts. The double-f ligatures in Bembo are
distinctive and essential to the font.

TeX-fat.dmg (http://www.rna.nl/tex.html) no longer has Ghostscript. You
have to use i-Installer (http://www.rna.nl/ii.html) to install
Ghostscript 6 (OS X 10.1.x) or Ghostscript 7 (OS X 10.2).

Subject: i-Installer Release Candidate 3d (update protocol, command line tool)
From: "Gerben Wierda"
Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 12:39:49 +0100

There is a new i-Installer, release candidate 3d.

	- A small bug when opening a remote package that is at that exact
moment being updated has been fixed (the warning sheet came up without
a window being present). I have also implemented the update protocol
locally. so that removes a possible problem with opening and reading
remote information while it is changing.

	- This version contains a small utility for unix-geeks (the GUI
frontend will follow later), called checkii2status. It can be found in
the Resources subdirectory of the application wrapper. It gets package
filenames (on the local disk) as arguments and will check each of them
against their remote location and report if they are not equal. E.g.:

% ls -l ~/Documents | grep ii2
drwxr-xr-x 6 gerben staff 204 Nov 4 13:13 autotrace.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 12 gerben staff 408 Oct 29 10:13 ghostscript-6.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 14 gerben staff 476 Nov 1 13:39 ghostscript-7.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 7 gerben staff 238 Oct 29 16:19 latex2rtf.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 5 gerben staff 170 Nov 5 11:45 pfaedit.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 16 gerben staff 544 Nov 3 16:00 texbinaries.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 12 gerben staff 408 Oct 29 16:18 texconfigure.ii2
drwxr-xr-x 14 gerben staff 476 Nov 4 17:12 texmf.ii2

%
/Applications/Utilities/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/
checkii2status ~/Documents/*.ii2
There is a newer version available for ~/Documents/ ghostscript-6.ii2
There is a newer version available for ~/Documents/ latex2rtf.ii2
The remote location for ~/Documents/ pfaedit.ii2 is currently being
updated
There is a newer version available for ~/Documents/ texbinaries.ii2
There is a newer version available for ~/Documents/ texconfigure.ii2

This utility can be used in a crontab setting to check for new versions
of existing packages on disk on a regular basis without having to start
i-installer. I still have to decide how to implement the setting of
this and the tool may change, but since it is very useful, I am already
including it now. I will not implement fattening (though I might when I
release i-Installer v2.1) and almost certainly not installation with
the command line tool.

Fool of me! Yes it does! Because I updated Ghostscript after my

What are the CM Super fonts? They are included as one of Gerben's
ipackages. Have been through the archives, read stuff found through
google and read Gerben's site, but find it all confusing. What is the
difference between the CM and CM Super and why would someone use one
over the other? Can TeX use any type 1 font? Do these need to be
converted or something? "The TeXBook" says TeX can use any system
font. Really? As in "Lucida Grande" and "Marker Felt"? That would be
cool. If so, how?

Simple version: CM Super is an extended set of Type 1 fonts set up to
allow easier use of accents w/ hyphenation.

>Can TeX use any type 1 font?

Pretty much. See the FontInst docs (the pre-release version has the most
and most up-to-date), also Karl Berry's FontName scheme.

>Do these need to be

Depends on your TeX Distribution. Normally for Gerben's tetex package
you need to convert them from resource fork to data fork format.

>"The TeXBook" says TeX can use any system
>font. Really?

Yes, if one sets up one's system so as to manage it. Arguably by DEK's
way of thinking this might include writing your own .dvi filter program...

>As in "Lucida Grande" and "Marker Felt"? That would be
>cool. If so, how?

For these you need to get them from .dfont format to normal .ttf, then
you can either use the .ttf or continue to convert it to a Type 1 font
and install that.

Quickly:

- CM fonts are the standard fonts shipped with the "original" TeX (well=20=

it's not entirely true, there were AM fonts first, but it's long gone=20
now). They are encoded on 7 bits, hence they are inappropriate for=20
languages with accents etc. This is called in LaTeX OT1 encoding. They=20=

were originally bitmapped fonts, PostScript versions have been created=20=

later by Blue Sky Research and Y & Y, these versions were then made=20
public and free, they are included in standard teTeX.

- EC fonts are a new set of fonts, based on CM but encoded on 8 bits,=20
to meet the needs of languages other than English. This is called T1=20
encoding in LaTeX. Again they were bitmapped fonts originally,=20
PostScript versions have recently been made, these are called CM-Super.

- LaTeX support files are available on CTAN archives for many=20
"standard" PostScript fonts (those from the Adobe Type Library, for=20
example). See the LaTeX Graphics Companion, chapter 10, and for an=20
alternative Y & Y's site (I have no affiliation with them ever) about=20
LY1 encoding at .

- As for using standard Mac fonts, I'm not aware of anything yet.=20
Sadly. Textures used to offer such facility, it still does, but only in=20=

Classic mode so far; it's commercial software, from Blue Sky Research,=20=

at . An OS X version is announced for about the=20=

end of this year.

Howdy,

I'm having a problem with the latest version of i-Installer not being able
to update its plist when I press the update button. I also note that there
is a problem with the check for updates if the directory you use for =
storing
updates has spaces in the name; I assume you're using the new CLI tool for
doing that.

Also, are all the update files being touched? Every time I have one new =
file
all the files are updated too and there is no notification of that on the
list.

Good Luck,

CM, when included in a PS/PDF document are normally included as bitmaps
at a certain resolution. Type 1 fonts are in a vector format (and
optional bitmap for small sizes I think). The CM-Super set are type 1
vector versions of the CM fonts, created automatically by producing
them at a high resoluton and then tracing the results with the
autotrace program. They are not perfect, but they have the advantage
that they work very well in PDF documents.

In general, the best output with TeX using CM fonts is still to use the
bitmaps in exactly the resolution you are using to print. This looks
best. However, they will look awful in other resolutions, like screen
resolution.

> Can TeX use any type 1 font? Do these need to be converted or

Yes, I think you need the AFM information to be able to convert them
automatically. Other people may know more.

> "The TeXBook" says TeX can use any system font. Really? As in "Lucida
> Grande" and "Marker Felt"? That would be cool. If so, how?

As far as I know, essential information, needed for conversion is
missing on Mac OS X. I think it *is* possible to convert many of the
Mac OS 9 fonts, but I am uncertain if this is the case and if so how. I
woul dlike to include automatic conversion of system fonts for use with
TeX in the configure stage of my TeX distribution, but so far I do not
have a clear recipe.

If someone can tell me how Mac OS 9 fonts should be converted
(automatically) for use with TeX, I can add the procedure to the
configuration stage of the TeX packages.

I have tried to reproduce this, but without success so far. i-Installer
itself is pretty ignorant of spaces in directory names. It might be
that not all packages are and that scripts need mending. I have not
checked all functions of all packages.

No.

Again, no. i-Installer retrieves the new table of contents, then checks
for all files that are already available if the MD5 checksum has
changed. If the checksum has changed, the file has changed and it is
removed from the local package for lazy update when needed. This is
reported in the messages view.

If you have problems, please report them directly to me and include
output from i-Installer (views and Console), maybe even set the log
level to 4 or 5 or so.

You can use the small utility Fondu (written by the pfaedit guy) to
convert from either Mac ttf or dfont to PC ttf.

http://fondu.sourceforge.net/

Then, have a script rename the font files, and run the Bash script
ttf2tex on them.

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/support/ttf2tex/

For fonts that have included small caps (like Hoefler Text), though,
you need to run ttf2tex in expert mode. Details in the pdf manual.

To have this totally automatic may be a little tricky, but you could
always just choose the most obvious fonts ahead of time:

Hoefler Text
Gill Sans
Optima
etc.

Thank you for your quick response. The error message is reproducible
(not a remote package being updated). For example, if I attempt to run
the ghostscript 7 i-installer script, I get a MD5 checksum error
regardless of the settings regarding the cache in the preferences and
the update always fails. This does not happen for new packages (for
example, I installed the rtf->latex converter without error). I turned
the log level up to 4 and the following was recorded:

gpg: Signature made Fri Nov 1 21:26:26 2002 JST using DSA key ID
C87AB5FC
gpg: requesting key C87AB5FC from HKP keyserver wwwkeys.nl.pgp.net

Does this imply that the package in question has been perhaps
unintentionally changed somewhere along the way?

No. The MD5 checksum and the GPG signature are independent. This only
says that there is a *good* signature, but that the public key used is
not signed by people you have said to trust. GPG has rather draconic
possibilities here with respect to trust.

As the originator of iinstaller@rna.nl I can tell you that

C1BA 787F 78B0 18D2 B6E7 9464 9D03 DB70 C87A B5FC

is correct, but officially you should call me on te phone to verify
that. Is is normally fine to turn GPG-checking off and only check teh
TOC signature by hand.

My original answer still stands (cache).

Note that you may try to remove the local copy of the package
alltogether and open it from another server to see if that helps. Also,
OFF LIST, send me more than just the output you have now sent. There is
no need to waste bandwidth until there is a solution to report.

Subject: [ANN] Carbon mac-emacs LaTeX-enhanced 2.0 for Jaguar
From: "Enrico Franconi"
Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 19:43:04 +0000

I've just uploaded the new release 2.0 of the LeTeX enhanced carbon
emacs, for MacOS X 10.2 (Jaguar).

This emacs is based on the standard emacs-21.3.50 CVS distribution (as
of 5 November 2002), enhanced with fully customisable LaTeX editing
environment based on AucTeX, RefTeX and other packages. There is no
need to have X11 installed; MacOS X 10.2 (Jaguar) is required. From
emacs, you can launch directly any latex process or any mac
application (like MacDvi, MacGhostView, Acrobat Reader, TexShop,
OzTeX, etc) on files or regions you are working on. LaTeX menus are
fully customisable. You can see it as a complete front-end to tetex.

MAIN CHANGES since 1.4
- Latest versions of emacs and latex packages
- 3 buttons mice with scroll wheel do work
- Added conversion to html with tex4ht
- Emacs application now completely independent
- Hopefully more robust to find tetex and gs binaries
- Works in Jaguar

If you downloaded any previous version you are invited to download
this new version.

Get it from http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~franconi/mac-emacs/

NOTES:
- This version of emacs requires MacOS X 10.2 (Jaguar).
- No X11 is required.
- This LaTeX enhanced emacs requires a working installation of teTeX
and ghostview; t4ht is required to convert latex files to hmtl. In
order to install teTeX and ghostview check the web page at
http://www.rna.nl/tex.html; t4ht can be installed via fink
  (http://fink.sourceforge.net).
- The Emacs application can not be moved from the /Applications
  folder.
- The Emacs application accepts files drag-and-dropped onto its icon
or within a window buffer; three buttons mice with the scroll wheel
  do work.
- As usual, emacs loads automatically the file ~/.emacs if it exists.
An example .emacs file (mirroring the default values for the LaTeX
enhancements) can be found in the doc/ folder as dot-emacs.el. You
can fully customise the Command menu and the launched applications.
- If the provided dot-emacs.el is copied in your personal ~/.emacs
file, automagically the emacs bundled with MacOS X (in /usr/bin) and
the fink installed emacs (in /sw/bin) will become LaTeX enhanced as
  well.
- By latexing with the srcltx option checked from the Prefs menu, and
previewing with MacDviX (or other srcltx aware previewers), the
previewer can automatically invoke back emacs at the clicked
  position (click-and-go).
- To launch carbon emacs from a shell, just copy the executable file
  /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/share/emacs/site-lisp/emacs
to any directory where binaries are recognised by the shell.
- To have full multi-lingual latex-aware spelling checking
capabilities, just install "ispell" from fink. By now, fink provides
automatic installation of American, British, French, Italian and
German dictionaries; other languages should be installed by hand.

- ADVANCED USERS: the directory
  /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/share/emacs/site-lisp/
  contains all the files necessary to recreate a LaTeX enhanced emacs;
it has been successfully tested with any emacs 21 on both Darwin
(with X11 or Carbon) and Linux (with X11) boxes. In the file
INSTALL you can find also instruction to create a dumped image with
  most of the packages preloaded.

COMMENTS and SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!

\usepackage[]{fontenc}

 may be OT1, T1, 8r, LY1 etc.

note that

1 - OT1 is the original knuth encoding and is defaultly loaded

2 - more than one encoding may be loaded, the last is used at begin

\fontencoding[]\selectfont

Of course sp=E9cific encodings are needed to typeset foreign languages
(russian, polish...). The T1 encodings contains all glyphs needed for
western european languages. OT1 encoding is there by default and for
historical reasons. OT1 doesn't conntain any diacritic char like =E9=E8=E0=FC, etc.
You can obtain =E9 (for instance) with OT1, but a word containing =E9 cannot be
hyphenated...

How did you install them ? If you made installation with fontinst, it is
posible to have ui (upright-italic), which is not very usefull (best to use
T1 for having a pound symbol), but also expert glyphs and ligatures, as
suggested by Adrian and even, small caps, semi bold, old-style digits...
