Subject: Consistent Underline?
From: "Jeff Collins"
Date: Sat, 26 Oct 2002 20:26:13 -0400

This isn't specific to Mac, but I'm having trouble getting underlines to
be consistent. I'm trying to indicated tagged phrases in a piece of text
by underlining them. The problem is, when the phrase contains a
descender (such a 'y'), the underline is lower than when the phrase does
not include a descender. Is there a way to make this be consistent?

Example of problem: It was \underline{quoted in} the last paper
\underline{in order to be} subjoined...

thanks,
Jeff

\usepackage{soul}

check-out its \ul command.

I used this last week w/out major problems:

\documentclass{elsart}

\usepackage{amsmath,amssymb,natbib}

The only weirdness was that citation numbers in the text used round
brackets instead of square brackets, making it a bit confusing to read
because equation numbers appear in round brackets. Would it help for me
to send you my elsart.cls file?

Subject: off topic, breaking up pdf files.

greetings all,

this isn't exactly a tex question, but this list has so many clever
people on it that it is tempting to ask here!

i have a tex-generated .pdf file that is hundreds of pages and
therefore rather large. i have to share this file with a group of
people, even as i update it frequently. since all the updates only
append pages on. since uploads/downloads through a modem (primitive, i
know) are rather slow i got the brilliant idea i'd save a lot of time
by splitting the file into a few chunks so my collaborators could
simply download the latest chunk instead of the whole file.
to retain formula/heading numberings, i tried to do this in acrobat
simply by opening the .pdf file, select "print", select a page range
and specify a file instead of a printer.

to my surprise (i don't know much about fonts) the resulting file
(containing only a fifth of the entire document) was substantially
larger than the original! there are no graphics involved, but the
original file is in landscape and the output is in portrait layout.

not surprisingly, the exact same thing happened if i repeated the steps
in preview.

is this because the printer driver embeds the fonts in the output file
for th printer to use, whereas latex simply assumes acrobat/preview
knows where to find everything it needs?

is there a better way to split large pdf-files to make them more
portable? (without messing with the tex-code?)

any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi

You could try pdfpages I guess. I am not sure if that would be
better or worse than print to pdf in Acrobat.

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pdfpages}

\begin{document}

\includepdf[ pages=3D{m-n}]{thebigfile.pdf}

\end{document}

Here m < n is the page range you want.

If you save this as smallbit.tex and tex it in texshop
it would create a pdf which is pages m to n of thebigfile.pdf

smallbit.tex will need to be in the same folder/directory
as thebigfile.pdf or you will need a longer pathname.

Hi again

I guess the other way to go (ignoring your request not to mess with the
tex code!) is to do something like

\documentclass{amsbook}

\input{macros}

%
% Comment out the chapters you don't want to include.
%
%\include{title}
%\includeonly{bundlegerbes}
%\includeonly{deligne}
%\includeonly{qft}
%\includeonly{ktheory}
%\includeonly{monopoles}
%\includeonly{world_sheets}
%\includeonly{index}
%\includeonly{twgerbes}
%\includeonly{refs}

\begin{document}

\include{title}

\include{bundlegerbes}
\include{deligne}
\include{qft}
\include{ktheory}
\include{monopoles}
\include{world_sheets}
\include{index}
\include{twogerbes}
\include{refs}

\end{document}

in each of the documents bundlegerbes.tex etc you have the tex code
for that chapter or whatever section it is. If you run it a couple
of times
to set up all the cross-referencing and then uncomment one of the
includeonly lines it will run just that chapter but preserve all
numbering. If you go this route remember to set the project root
in texshop as per the doc's. This makes things easier.

I'd guess that Acrobat is subsetting the fonts so that each page
can become self-contained; whereas pdfTeX loads a font once
and uses it on all pages.

Most of the size of a PDF document resides in the images
and the resources (such as fonts), rather than in the text itself.
Since pdfTeX makes very efficient PDF, at least with respect to font =
usage,
then I think your idea of splitting the file for user convenience
is actually misguided.
You would be better-off making separate TeX jobs for the different
chapters --- is it a proceedings ? --- or just letting each author
see the whole lot.

I've done two proceedings volumes -- one of ~600 pages, the other ~480 =
pages
 --- where to get author corrections we have separate jobs.
Using some specially written package files, and LaTeX's \includeonly
mechanism, as well as things like the minitoc package,
we make -only.pdf files that include the front-matter (incl.
Preface and Table-of-Contents) and have the exact same page-numbering
for the author's chapter as is used in the full book.

With the help of a Unix Makefile, updating all the files at the same time
is as easy as updating just the book --- and doesn't take that much =
longer.

In practice you may not gain too much, since the same fonts probably
need to be included.

Yes; this is the kind of thing to do.
Rather than repeated comment/uncomment of the \includeonly
commands, take multiple copies of this base file.
Do the comment/uncomment exactly once.
Then construct a Makefile to make it easier to run the resulting
 .tex  files as separate jobs.

You don't need a front-end like TeXshop for this.
If far easier to use the Unix command-line.

Cheers

Hello,

I just finished re-downloading TeX-Fat.dmg.

Now, when I click onto the icon to install, (marked
with Explorer) OS 9.2.2 boots up and Explorer searches
for info on it.

That's the extent of its function thus far.

Would appreciate any help with this.

Thank you,

Tim

Hi Tim

Are you clicking on the TeX-Fat.dmg ? If so the
OS has got confused and thinks its is an Explorer
document (classic Explorer by the look of it.)
It needs to be opened in Disk Copy.
Find Disk Copy in Applications/Utilities. Drag and drop
TeX-Fat.dmg onto Disk Copy. Hopefully it will mount it as a
volume and then you can run the installer inside that volume.

If that doesn't work try Control-Clicking with it and
hope there is a contextual menu saying Open with. Follow
that and try and track down Disk Copy.

If that doesn't do it do Command-I on it (Get Info in the Finder)
and select Disk Copy as the application to open it. Then
you should be able to double click it and have it launch disk copy.

Michael

PS It hasn't by any chance saved as TeX-Fat.dmg.1 has it ? It
needs to be a name ending in .dmg to have any hope of being
opened by Disk Copy when you double click.

If Ted's idea doesn't work the I don't know what is going on.

If in Terminal you  do

which basename

does it say

/usr/bin/basename

Or if you do ls /usr/bin is there a basename in the resulting file
list ?

Have you installed anything else into the unix side of the mac ?
Fink by any chance ?

Quite probably he doesn't have the BSD subsystem installed. basename,
gzip and somewhat over 300 other commands in /usr/bin are only installed
if you check the "Install BSD system" box during the installation of Mac
OSX. Apple seems to think that the typical mouse-clicking analphabetical
Mac user doesn't need these.

Ted,

Thank you!

I thought we hit pay dirt, but no such luck.

The icon appeared on the desktop, the install windows
come up, but then:

For texfoundations, "unarchiving failed . . . "
appears, and is followed by:
teTeX-texmf.pre_install: /usr/bin/basename: No such
file or directory
tar (child): Cannot exec gzip: No such file or
directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
/Users/tlighthiser/.Trash/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/gnutar:
Child returned status 2
/Users/tlighthiser/.Trash/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/gnutar:
Error exit delayed from previous errors
Task terminated with status 2

For TeX programs, "unarchiving failed" appears, and is
followed by:
TeXLive-bin.pre_install: /usr/bin/basename: No such
file or directory
TeXLive-bin.pre_install: /usr/bin/basename: No such
file or directory
tar (child): Cannot exec gzip: No such file or
directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
/Users/tlighthiser/.Trash/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/gnutar:
Child returned status 2
/Users/tlighthiser/.Trash/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/gnutar:
Error exit delayed from previous errors
Task terminated with status 2

For ghostscript, "unarchiving failed . . . " appears,
and is followed by:
gs6.01.pre_install: /usr/bin/basename: No such file or
directory
gs6.01.pre_install: /usr/bin/basename: No such file or
directory
tar (child): Cannot exec gzip: No such file or
directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
/Users/tlighthiser/.Trash/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/gnutar:
Child returned status 2
/Users/tlighthiser/.Trash/i-Installer.app/Contents/Resources/gnutar:
Error exit delayed from previous errors
Task terminated with status 2

Ah good thought Martin. ( I thought this was a default part of the
install that you could turn off if you wanted to but which would
install if you didn't? ) Tim do you recall if you installed the
BSD sub system ?

Subject: Re: [OS X TeX] installing TeX-Fat.dmg
From:
Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 02:58:17 -0500

I'm sure you can get straightened out... all I have left -not knowing
the CLI enough- would be a reinstall of OS X 10.2.1 (you are using a
fully updated Jaguar, right? and I install the latest shipping Dev
Tools).

I'd do the i-installer thin first, from the desktop (use the check for
latest button); then you simply launch and use TeXShop (downloaded
before or after).

Sorry, to go backwards, but there it is. Don't be discouraged, I do
this all the time on new (and older) machines and it always 'just'
works and everybody loves it.

I do have one more suggestion or two: run the Apple 'fix permissions'
thing from Disk Utility a few times.
And maybe start your machine using 'cmnd+s' and run 'fsck -y' a few
times, too.

Good luck!
--Ted

p.s. If you want Xfree86 install following these instructions exactly:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jag-bootstrap.php
but you needn't have that for TeXShop or this list.

But that's OT, because for TeX/TeXShop you certainly don't need Xfree
(or Fink).

Hi Tim

OK so you don't have /usr/bin/basename . I am not sure why. Have a look at
/Library/Receipts and see if you have a BSD.pkg The presence
or not of that receipt should indicate if the BSD subsystem was
installed or not. (So presumably would that list of stuff in /usr/bin
if I knew
more about the MacOS!)

Have you got access to the 10.2 installation disks ?

Do *not* use thin. The old style i-Packages needed to fatten the thin
package will disappear in the forseeable future. Use fat.

You need to install the BSD subsystem on your computer.

Dear List:

Thanks for your patience and help.

With the BSD subsystem installed everything seems to
be running fine.

This is *very* exciting!

Kind regards,

Does anybody know when in the installation process such a choice=20
can/must be done? I can't remember having ever instructed anything=20
about a BSD subsystem to my G4. But as my installation was OS 9 ->=20
Public Beta -> 10.0 update -> 10.1 update -> 10.2 update, I may have=20
missed something present in a direct install.

By the way, does anybody know a URL documenting Apple's notion of a BSD=20=

subsystem, and why its installation may be considered optional?=20
(Nothing too technical, as I'm not a programmer, just an interested=20
user.)

I do not know, but I'm fairly unhappy about Apple lowering the
standards wrt the availability of unix stuff here. As I do understand
and support their insistence on GUI-stuff, there is nothing wrong with
GUI-stuff using Unix stuff in the back, IMO.

This change (where Apple's Mac OS X in fact is a rather 'broken' unix
by default as much of what is standard part of unix is missing) has
delayed i-installer v2 because I want to work around this so that
i-installer v2 will work on systems without the BSD subsystem
installed. The solution is that i am going to copy those parts of the
BSD subsystem that I need into my own app. This is suboptimal, but the
only way out.

So, the good news is that i-Installer v2 will be BSD-independent, the
bad news is that it will be delayed by a day or so (I was supposed to
release it today) and that of course it is not clear if this BSD-less
solution is at all entirely possible.

I remember Public Beta providing several nice utilities (in=20
/Applications/Utilities/) which, though buggy, were convenient. These=20
utilities, too, were removed in 10.0 without any warning. I miss in=20
particular the HTML editor, which got me started on implementing the=20
web pages of my research group.

If these BSD parts are related to decompression, is there a possibility=20=

of using StuffIt Expander instead? I don't know whether it's still=20
shipped by Apple as part of the OS, but originally it was (as I own=20
StuffIt Deluxe, Apple's installer's behaviour in my case is probably=20
not standard). But in any case StuffIt is a proprietary product, so=20
relying on it in another software is probably not a good idea anyway.

     I just upgraded to 10.2 two days ago. When the installer was ready
to get to work ("Click Next for an Easy Install" or some such message) I
noticed the "Options" button and tried it. That is where you get to
decide whether to install the "BSD subsystem." I included that, but
decided to save a few hundred MB by not installing fonts and
localizations for languages I do not use. (Famous last words...)

     I do not remember where, if anywhere, the "BSD subsystem" is
documented.

From: "Bruno Voisin"

cmex7-9 are extra AMS fonts, now part of standard LaTeX, but absent
from the free PS version of the fonts. teTeX was normally set to scale
the neighbouring size cmex10, available in PS format. This has changed
recently, a new free PS version of cmex7-9 is used instead, and it
should still work. It doesn't. I'm not sure why.

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/bluesky/bsr-interpolated.map, dated
1 August 2002, says:

	% The bsr fonts don't cover the whole AMS set. This map file tells
	% pdftex/dvips to fill the gaps by using the closest available size.
	%
	% cmex fonts are no longer scaled by this file; instead, ttcmex.map is
	% used in teTeX (using Type1 fonts from TeXTrace2001).

and indeed /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/dvips/tetex/ttcmex.map, dated 1
August 2002, says:

	% Support for cmex fonts from TeXTrace project. Type1 files are taken

Hi Bruno

I found this link but it doesn't detail what is in and what is out of the
BSD subsystem.
