Hello,
I have to compile a latex file using bibtex for the bibliography (teTeX
and iTeXMac on MacOSX10.2). BibTeX doesn't find my bib files. I suppose
I must give it the path to the bib files. How to do that?
Thierry

G. Wierda teTeX will look for customized bib files in

~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib

create this folder if it does not exist

personnal biblio styles should be in

~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bst

you also could deal with envir variables but this is rather complicated=20=

and risky=

Dear all

I should be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of
"how to get started" running LaTeX on a Mac (iBook running OSX). I
thought I was not stupid, but I am having a heck of a time trying to
make any of the packages (Oztex, cmactex etc) work. All installation
instructions etc start from an assumed level of knowledge that I
clearly do not have.

I know I can create an ascii file with LateX code. I can edit the
.tex file that my coauthor has sent me (created in Scientific Word on
a PC) using BBedit lite, or Alpha. I am familiar with Jane Hahn's
book on the LateX code. But how do I move on? Where am I supposed to
have installed the format files etc? Is this info available on a FAQ
list somewhere? My colleagues at Emory who use Latex all appear to
use it on PC's and so cannot help me with the Mac aspect.

Hope someone can help

StephenB

TeXShop and iTeXMac are both based on Gerben Wierda's adaptation of
teTeX for Mac OS X. teTeX is more or less the standard TeX install on
Linux, which makes it very easy to collaborate with people working on
PCs. If I'm not mistaken, OzTeX and CMacTeX both have options for using
teTeX instead of the original TeX arborescence shipped with them.

A good starting point: http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/

Hi Stephen

I my opinion the simplest thing is to get TeXShop from

http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html

Scroll down a bit and it tells you where to download
TeXShop and teTeX from (called TeX.dmg on this page).

You have to run the installer for teTeX and drop TeXShop in your
applications folder - thats it.

If you have style files etc that need to be installed put them
in a directory in your home folder. For example all
mine are in

/Users/mmurray/Library/texmf/tex/latex/misc

You can just create this collection of folders in the
usual way inside /Users/mmurray/Library but of course
mmurray will be your name (I guess!). /Users/mmurray is the
directory or folder you get to when you click on Home in a
finder window.

You may find Gerben Weirda's pages at

http://www.rna.nl/tex.html

useful if you have problems. Gerben maintains the teTeX distribution
that you have downloaded to use with TeXShop.

You are right about Alpha, BBEdit they can be used in various
ways. They are more powerful editors than the editor built
into TeXShop but the latter is a simple place to start.

If you find I am assuming things there that you don't
understand just post back and we can sort it out.

Michael

You're right in all your assumptions, and you're lucky, because
free TeX on MacOS X is very nice. Go to
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html. Here you
will find instructions and links for downloading and installing
everything you need. There are two main parts: the TeX engine,
(almost 60 MB), including the fonts, the actual typesetting
program, and even Ghostscript, and TexShop (just 1020 KB), the
beautiful front-end where you can edit and display the output.
You can also keep using BBEdit or whatever you want to. After
these are installed you will have magical powers: you will be
able to double-click on a postscript file and see it displayed,
or make a pdf file from your TeX output.

To the very good advices you have already received, I would just add:
If your .tex file comes from Scientific Word, and after installing
everything you experience typesetting problems, look into the first
lines of the file for unusual \input or \usepackage commands:
Scientific Word sometimes does use its own style files (or fonts),
which might not be found in the standard distributions... then ask
your co-author to send you them.

Well, neither downloading a new copy of TeXShop nor calling ps2pdf13 in
/usr/local/bin/ps2pdf made any difference, and i don't have any spaces
in my filenames. console still gives only "MANPATH undefined variable".
same behavior on 2 machines....tom

Does anyone know why, in Classic, (I have 2 machines) one will save as
PDF and the other it's dimmed out? (Unfortunately, I am not in front
of these machines and did not install the software -thus I ask here- I
am the one asked to try to figure it out!

Thought someone might have a quick answer.

TIA

Ted,

It is very likely that one machine has Adobe Acrobat Distiller
installed, hence the option to "Save as PDF" in the Print dialog.

Subject: disk icon
From: "Donal B. Day"

Sorry for the off topic posting but ...

Can anyone explain why my disk icon has stripes across it? They disappear
when I click on the disk. When I 'get information' on the disk, the icon
is normal. This just occurred the other day and I can not correlate it
with anything directly. I did run the commands that were posted a few
days ago

sudo sh /etc/daily

sudo update_prebinding -root

There do not seem to be any problems however.

I can send a tiff image of the icon to anyone interested.

Thanks,

Donal

Have you tried in Terminal.app the command which?

which ps2pdf

---the result should be
/usr/local/bin/ps2pdf

which gs

---you should get
/usr/local/bin/gs
