I have removed these i-Packages because I was running out of disk quota
on the machine that hosts them which is the case because I am testing
with a lot of new-style packages.

Doubleclicking on a .ps file on my system has the effect that TeXShop=3D20

TeXShop, tetex, and ghostscript have been installed well before I=3D20
*upgraded* to OS 10.2 and then to 10.2.1, and I never experienced a =
TeX=3D20=3D

related problem.

The only unusual (manual) routine I stick to is to do each day

sudo sh /etc/daily

though I don't think that this is related to the trouble other people=3D20
have. More likely that upgrading to 10.2 and not doing a "clean=3D20
install" is responsible for the different behaviour.

As a follow up, after upgrading to 10.2 I had a major OS problem =

the installation of Internet Explorer 5.2.2 which I resolved by using=3D20
Disk Utility to repair the Disk Permissions which have been totally=3D20

Repairing the Disk Permission certainly doesn't do any damage.

Also doing

sudo update_prebinding -root /

which I do occasionally might help.

Thanks for all the replies:
No method of opening the file works for me.
Yes, the command line works fine (eg pstopdf) but i liked opening them
in TeXShop.
I also immediately updated to 10.2.1
TeX+Ghostscript works for typesetting with .ps as image files so I
doubt gs is broken.
I get the same behavior on my desktop G4 and on my powerbook G4.
If I try to open Console all I can get is console.log - doesn't look
like a console to me, another jaguar glitch? - and upon trying to open
a .ps the msg is "MANPATH: undefined variable".
Sure, trashing some plist might fix it but I don't know yet.

No big deal, unless you're compulsive :)

Subject: moving from ps to pdf
From: "Eric van der Oord"

Suppose I have some postscript figure, say"dessin.ps"

TeXshop can transform it , giving "dessin.pdf"

Then I can run altpdflatex with the graphicx package, using

	\includegraphics[height=3D50mm]{dessin.ps}

or run pdtlatex, using

	\includegraphics[height=3D50mm]{dessin.pdf}

and the size of the result is not the same !

I suspect some BoundingBBox problem.

Is there some systematic way to fix it ?

Thanks for any help

About Axel Retif's message, supporting what I reported earlier: thanks,
but I think this problem with spaces in filenames is distinct from the
problem with dragging PS or EPS files onto TeXShop (though I wasn't
clear about the separation in my previous messages).

I tried again to drag a file psphprof.eps, at the first level of my
home directory, onto TeXShop, and I tried it several times in sequence,
closing TeXShop in between, it fails all the time with the message in
Console.app:

2002-10-10 13:13:46.797 TeXShop[394] CFLog (0):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not
proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
	/Applications/TeXShop/TeXShop.app/Contents/Resources/French.lproj/
Localizable.strings
The parser will retry as in 10.1, but the problem should be corrected
in the plist.
2002-10-10 13:13:47.681 TeXShop[394] launch path not accessible

And about clean installs, suggested by somebody else: I installed
things as cleanly as possible, using Gerben's i-Installer package for
teTeX and GhostScript 7, and the standard installer for TeXShop; both
are the latest versions.

I didn't go as far as installing OS X 10.2 from scratch, I just
upgraded my 10.1 (actually I did "Archive and install" at the
suggestion of Apple technical support, after experiencing problems) and
then reinstalled teTeX and TeXShop from scratch. I'm also not really
willing to reinstall the OS completely, as I have no additional disk
for backing up the 3.5 Gb in my home directory, everything is on CDs
and Zip cartridges and I don't want to spend the time reconstructing
the directory from the scattered pieces, in case of emergency.

OK, I apologize: I just erased the TeXShop that was on my disk,
downloaded TeXShop.dmg and reinstalled TeXShop from it. Dragging PS and
EPS files work now, just as they did in 10.1.

It seems to be (in my case at least) a problem with read/write/execute
permissions.

So a clean reinstall of TeXShop (the application) is indeed the
solution, apparently. Sorry for having wasted your time.

Well --- I think it's the same. But I tried again, drag-dropping to
TeXShop first and then both ps2pdf and epstopdf in Terminal.app with a
file "V_Concurso_Part_Estados.eps" ---a pdf came out perfectly every
time (but of course ps2pdf named "V_Concurso_Part_Estados.eps.pdf).

For me, then, your solution worked perfectly with TeXShop (because, I
think, it wasn't a TeXShop but a Ghostscript problem).

All .strings files must be encoded in UTF8, According to TeXShop =20
sources many of them are still in mac os roman which can cause problems =20=

like the one discussed here. Before Richard makes the correction, you =20=

can change things by yourself. Try to open the above file and save it =20=

back with UTF-8 string encoding. You should do the same for all the =20
.strings files in your .lproj

Of course this problem will not occur in english because mac os roman =20=

and UTF 8 restricted to ascii are the same.=

Not a waste of time at all! You made clear that we should avoid spaces
in our file names for them to work in Ghostscript. And here comes again
the "read/write/execute permissions" plague..., or so it seems.

Why use 13 instead of 12? Should this also be changed in the TeXShop
settings? If so, is it simply a matter of changing the Distiller
(ghostscript) path to

/usr/local/bin/ps2pdf13

or is there more to it than that? Does something also need to be
changed in the TeX + dvips + distiller section?

That's what I did first, early this afternoon, on a copy of TeXShop.app=20=

that I had moved to the Desktop. And yes, things worked (dragging=20
PS/EPS files onto TeXShop) after I had done that.

But then I tried taking the original TeXShop.app, unmodified, and=20
moving it to the Desktop. Surprise: things worked too, with this=20
unmodified copy.

Then I erased all the TeXShops on my disk and reinstalled it from=20
scratch. Things work, too.

Or is it that having once modified=20
TeXShop.app/Contents/Resources/French.lproj/Localizable.strings=20
(opening it in TextEdit.app and converting the encoding to UTF-8)=20
modifies some .plist file generated by TeXShop, and makes sure that it=20=

works in any case afterwards?

I'm just sure of one thing for now: I'm lost!

It's related to a problem with misplaced accents (first found on this=20
list in the thread "[OS X TeX] Accent bug with times", and in another=20
thread afterwards), if you use the TeX + GhostScript route instead of=20
pdfTeX. The script ps2pdf calls ps2pdf12 by default, and then you have=20=

this reported problem; if you call ps2pdf13 directly, the problem=20
disappears. That's what I observed at least in the reported case.

Aha. Thank you.

Is the solution outlined above the way to make TeXShop call ps2pdf13
when typesetting using TeX + Ghostscript? Did I miss anything?

Thank you,

I think Gerben told that, if this bug is reported and confirmed by=20
several people, and if the fix (calling ps2pdf13) is also confirmed and=20=

doesn't create problems with GhostScript 6, the simpler solution would=20=

probably be to modify the scripts (that he wrote) altpdftex and=20
altpdflatex to call ps2pdf13 instead of ps2pdf12.

I had this version of the problem in MacOS X 10.2.1: .ps and .eps files,
when dragged to TeXShop or opened with a contextual menu, produced no
result. (ps2pdf13 worked fine from the Terminal - I have Ghostscript 6.0.1
installed.) I edited altpdflatex to have distillerprog=3D"ps2pdf13", but =
this
did not help. So, I trashed by TeXShop v. 1.19 and installed v.1.20, and =
now
it works. So, if you have this problem, try upgrading first!
