Since upgrading to 10.2 TexShop no longer opens .ps files. I double click
on a .ps, TeXShop opens, but nothing happens. I'm using the latest teTeX
and TeXShop versions. TIA for any suggestions....

HI
I though it was just me!! This is actually a persistent problem with
the mac platform as far as I've experienced. I get ps files all the
time in email and from the web and opening them is always a struggle.
It got better with OSX, then as you note, kinda broke with OS10.2 after
some relief with TeXShop. In OS9, the very expensive Tailor was very
useful, but TeXShop really seemed the neatest thing.

Ideas would _really_ be welcome on this general subject.

thanks,
Ray

Yes this has been reported several times, for both .ps and .eps files.=20=

It might depend on the user's specific setup, as some people say either:

- that things work as before; or

- that dragging files onto TeXShop doesn't work, but that contextual=20
menus work (i.e., in the Finder control-click a .ps file and select=20
"Open with..." then TeXShop); or

- that nothing works.

I belong to the third class of users. Fortunately, command-line tools=20
still work: in a terminal window, you can still type:

- "ps2pdf13 filename.ps" for .ps files, and

- "epstopdf filename.eps" for .eps files.

Make sure that you use ps2pdf13 instead of ps2pdf (which calls ps2pdf12=20=

implicitly), in case you installed GhostScript 7 instead of GhostScript=20=

6.

Good luck,

Bruno Voisin

Even cooler as Tailor.app in NeXTstep.

Imagine how cool it'd've been if we'd had Display PostScript and we
could've had all of TeXView.app's functionality out of the box as it were.

GhostScript---there's a Mac (shareware) port of a viewing program, or you
could use X Window

About the script epstopdf, something I just noticed: epstopdf doesn't
accept "." in paths, whereas usual UNIX commands cd etc. do. It might
as well be a feature of GhostScript itself, not epstopdf.

Appended below is an example, pasted from Terminal.app.

Works for me. I installed Jaguar and almost immediately installed the
10.2.1 upgrade, so I cannot say for sure, but maybe 10.2.1 fixed it.

I am using TeXShop 1.20.

Sorry, I sent my latest message too quickly: I did another test, it's
not the dot "." but the space " " in paths, which is confusing epstopdf.

I am running the latest TeXShop and teTeX under OS X 10.2.1, and still =20=

I am having this problem. It might be localization-specific, as here is =20=

what Console.app says when I'm dragging an EPS file onto TeXShop:

2002-10-09 18:32:00.905 TeXShop[753] CFLog (0):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data =
is not =20
proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
	=
/Applications/TeXShop/TeXShop.app/Contents/Resources/French.lproj/=20
Localizable.strings
The parser will retry as in 10.1, but the problem should be =
corrected =20
in the plist.
2002-10-09 18:32:01.595 TeXShop[753] launch path not accessible

But then, the original message on this thread was sent by "tom" =20
, who I suppose is running the American localization, so =20=

I'm quite lost.

Would the problem be cured by erasing some .plist file?

Until TeXShop/Mac OS X is fixed, you can:

1) download MacGhostViewX from http://www.versiontracker.com (Mac OS X
section)

2) install gv via fink, http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jag-bootstrap.php
(You will also need XFree86 and ghostscript)

It may be that what is broken in your system is ghostscript. I believe
ghostscript is essential to any screen interpretation of postscript in Mac
OS X.

I will fix this as soon as I have time. Distribution may have to wait
until i-Installer v2 is ready for 'release canidate'.

PStill is a good alternative as far as I know.
