Actually:

MANPATH_MAP /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current
/usr/local/teTeX/man

Make sure you have *NO* MANPATH environment variable set at all. Then
man will work just fine.

man tex

works on my system.

Actually, I *am* following the standards Except that I intriduce an
extra symlink to make maintenance (a lot) easier.

Because the bins are not there?

Dear Friends
I've installed mac-Emacs on a G4 running OSX 10.2.1 without problems
but I'm not able to launch the program. There are compatibility
problems with Jaguar ?
Thancks for help.

Yes. I've been a version of Emacs that will run.
http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/EmacsInstaller.dmg.gz

It's not mac-Emacs, but it's otherwise a fully functional Emacs ( to
the extent that I tested it).

Yes, if you open a console window while launching mac-Emacs, you will
see some error messages. mac-Emacs expects some things to be in a
dynamically loaded library that are no longer present in Jaguar. It
just needs to be recompiled.

There has been recently a thread "Accent bug with times", on a case of=20=

misplaced accents under Jaguar. The bug turned out to be a GhostScript=20=

bug, not a Jaguar bug: it was a bug in the script ps2pdf launched for=20
the PS -> PDF conversion, or in GhostScript itself.

If that is the same bug, there might be several solutions. I do not=20
guarantee any of them will work:

- Use pdfTeX instead of TeX + dvips + GhostScript. That is, typeset=20
from TeXShop in pdfTeX mode.

- Call the script ps2pdf13 for the PS -> PDF conversion instead of the=20=

default ps2pdf12 (in /usr/local/bin/). That might be done, perhaps,=20
from TeXShop by going to Preferences/Engine and adding the argument

--distiller=3D/usr/local/bin/ps2pdf13

to the call of the scripts altpdftex and altpdflatex.

- Not recommended in any case: modify the scripts

/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin5.5/altpdftex
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin5.5/altpdflatex

by editing the line

distillerprog=3D"ps2pdf"

adding -dCompatibility=3D1.3 maybe.

- If you have it, try Acrobat Distiller for the PS -> PDF conversion.=20
If you use TeXShop, you have to first check "Save PostScript file" in=20
Preferences/Engine so that the intermediary PS file produced by TeXShop=20=

is saved.

Hope some of the above works.

Bruno Voisin

(Gerben, I'm sending you a copy of this so that you can correct if I'm=20=

saying something blatantly wrong about your teTeX setup. I hope that's=20=

not the case.)=

A sinuous way to proceed: from Terminal.app, run the script epstopdf on=20=

your EPS files to convert them to PDF, then open them in Preview.app=20
and export them as TIFF. (I recently found out about the more extended=20=

"Export" abilities of Preview.app in Jaguar, I find them quite=20
impressive.)

There might be more integrated solutions based on ImageMagick or=20
GraphicConverter.

While I'm at it, concerning Preview.app: does anybody know to disable=20
bookmarks, I find that they make the display of PDF files substantially=20=

slower? And how to set up a default window size, and default=20
magnification?

Or just changing it to ps2pdf13. Not recommended for others, but, being
the author, I might of course make ps2pdf13 the default for altpdftex
in the future. Are there disadvantages? E.g. when running gs6 on OSX
10.1? I cannot test this myself (Justmoved to 10.2.1 and my 10.1 disk
is dying, only 1 year old Maxtor *80GB with block/sector problems).

Installing the ImageMagick i-Package will help. Either with the old
i-Installer or contact me directly and I'll tell you where to download
the current beta of the new i-Installer (which does not require for you
to type in URL's of most packages as it has the ability to locate them)

man used to be governed through a MANPATH environment variable.
Nowadays, the default setting is in a configuration file
/etc/manpath.conf. But when MANPATH *is* available, the config file is
ignored. When you have an older setup where somewhere in your system
(generic startup files for your shell, fink, whatever), a MANPATH is
set, it prevents you from using the newer mechanism. I do suspect,
having a MANPATH variable is faster, so what you could do is set

	setenv MANPATH `manpath -q`

in your .login. That will read manpath.conf and output the result which
is then set in your MANPATH variable. Now, man will use this variable.
If manpath.conf changes, you need to restart your shell or re-run
.login. Note, this is untested, I just think this would work.

The situation is somewhat like TeX. There used to be all kinds of
environment variables for TeX (TEXINPUTS, etc), nowadays these are
found in a configuration file. Like with man, if you set TeX's
environment variables, the ones on the config files are ignored (and
you might get problems because of that).

Newbie to using these tools:

Am I to be able to type "gs" or "ImageMagick" at my Terminal.app and

Those produce, "command not found" for me. (The man pages do show up.)

In a Terminal window you can run a command like

gs -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=3Dtiff24nc -r288 -g488x392 =
-sOutputFile=3D"file.tiff" -f "file.eps" -c showpage -c quit

where -r specifies the resolution and -g is the size of the resulting =
tiff.
See the ghostscript manual for other options.

You can also use macps2pdf which has a Menu selection for doing this
conversion and supports doing this through an Apple script.

Well, firstly, your files may have a line-ending problem.
(but I don't think this is the real problem, see below)

This mess (from below):

%!PS-Adobe-2.0=3D20EPSF-1.2=3D0D%%BoundingBox:=3D20125=3D203=3D20473=3D2042=
6=3D0D=3D
%%HiResBoundingBox:=3D20125.938=3D203.1875=3D20472.25=3D20425.938=3D0D%%Cre=
ator:

should look more like:

%!PS-Adobe-2.0=3D20EPSF-1.2=3D0D
%%BoundingBox:=3D20125=3D203=3D20473=3D20426=3D0D=3D
%%HiResBoundingBox:=3D20125.938=3D203.1875=3D20472.25=3D20425.938=3D0D
%%Creator:

The =3D0D represents a \r (carriage-return)
rather than a unix \n (new-line) character.
So first open your Mathematica graphics in BBedit and resave
as Unix, rather than Mac.
Then try the ps2pdf route again.

If that doesn't work, then maybe the Mathematica fonts
are not included. That's what this seems to be saying:
(after cleaning up the encoding for email attachment)

%%DocumentNeededResources: font Math1
%%+ font Times-Italic
%%+ font Courier
%%+ font Times-Roman
%%DocumentSuppliedResources:
%%DocumentNeededFonts: Math1
%%+ Times-Italic
%%+ Courier
%%+ Times-Roman
%%DocumentSuppliedFonts:
%%DocumentFonts: Math1
%%+ Times-Italic
%%+ Courier
%%+ Times-Roman
%%EndComments

The Mathematica font Math1 is needed, but not supplied in the .eps.
Without it, you will not get GS to convert the file properly anyway.
So you must either find the way to make Mathematica include all the fonts
when it makes the .eps file, else send the publishers the .eps files
(without fonts) and tell them to find the necessary resources and do
the conversion.
It won't be the first time that they have encountered such problems.

I assume you mean the thumbnails. In the preferences you can select
"Show Name Only" and uncheck "Load All Thumbnails". You still get the
side panel, but it contains text only. This might speed things up a
bit. I'd also be very interested in a way to change the default window
size & magnification.

BTW, Preview in 10.2 has been improved a lot compared to the one in
10.1. In particular, rendering of Type 3 (bitmapped) fonts is now very
good (much better than Acrobat Reader, in fact).

You are all being so kind!

I got:
dyld: convert can't open library: /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
(No such file or directory, errno =3D 2)
Trace/BPT trap

(looks like a real fubar on my part... but what to do?)
