Yesterday, I was getting similar messages when printing a PDF file
using Apple's Preview application. For example:

Sep 25 18:01:58 PeterHammond3
/Applications/Preview.app/Contents/MacOS/Preview: kCGErrorFailure :
can't find name id 6 for font id 49759

The file was all text (actually, a legal document), and it seems I did
not even have TeXShop running. So probably this is an Apple bug ...

Subject: New TeX distribution releases
From: "Gerben Wierda"
Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 14:21:33 +0200

I have upgraded my releases to teTeX's texmf tree as of Sep 22, 2002.

Further notes:
- As teTeX has removed algorithm.sty because of an unclear license, I
have added algorithm to the macosx part of the texmf tree (my strategy
on licenses differs slightly from Thomas' strategy)
- TeXGSInstaller now (probably more correctly) warns about a missing BSD
subsystem install of your Mac OS X when it cannot find the dirname
program.

As allways: either upgrade your TeX Foundation i-Package, or download a
volume through http://www.rna.nl/tex.html

G

PS. Following this upgrade, I will move my own production system from
Mac OS X 10.1.5 to Mac OS X 10.2.1. This move will take some time.

No, I didn't remove any files (why should I?) and I didn't touch the
teTeX installation
(at least not deliberately). Also, all files like supp-pdf.tex and
supp-mis.tex appeared to be in place.
It is also strange that I detected the same error on two computers (at =
home and
at work). Re-running the thin dedicated i-Installer didn't cure the =
problem.
But thanks to Bruno Voisin's hints I know that the problem is with my
installation only.
So I used the radical method: I removed usr/local/teTeX-folder completely,
downloaded the fat i-Installer, and installed everything from the
very beginning.
Now it works again.

Thank you,
Bernd Thaller

Subject: Problem with ImageMagick?
From: "Jeff Collins"

I'm not expecting great results, but I've been trying to convert some
papers written long ago (in Word) to LaTeX using rtf2latex2e. The
conversion works well enough, except for a warning I encounter as it
converts each picture. The warning reads as follows and results in a
LaTeX file that does not work:

>* Warning: PICT format image encountered.
>Calling ImageMagick to convert figure to EPS...
>dyld: convert can't open library: /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib (No
>such file or directory, errno =3D 2)
>* Figure conversion to EPS failed! Is ImageMagick installed?

I re-installed the ImageMagick distribution from the URL below using the
i-installer program:

I still get the same warnings as a try to convert the rtf file.
Interestingly (and maybe relevant), the i-installer window that opens
when trying to install from the above URL is titled "TIFF Library" rather
than the expected "ImageMagick." Can anyone offer advice about how to
trouble-shoot this problem?

thanks,
Jeff

Is there a file called "libfreetype.6.dylib" in "/usr/local/lib"? If
not, there's your problem. I haven't used the i-installer for
ImageMagick or FreeType, so I'm not sure if installs the dynamic
libraries in /usr/local/lib. I used fink a long time ago, and it
installed it in its directory structure aka /sw/lib/. If you installed
the XWindows package, then it might be in /usr/X11R6/lib/.

There also is a freetype i-Package. You probably need to install that as
well.

Thanks. I just installed it. This didn't seem to work, but it did change
the warning message to the following:

>* Warning: PICT format image encountered.

>* Figure conversion to EPS failed! Is ImageMagick installed?

I guess I may try installing Fink and then install the ImageMagick
package, as Arun seemed to suggest in his post.

cheers,
Jeff

This is whatever is trying to convert your picture.

> convert: invalid colormap index (variation2Fig1.pict).

This is ImageMagick complaining about your pict file. From this, it
seems that ImageMagick is installed correctly.

> * Figure conversion to EPS failed! Is ImageMagick installed?

This is the program that called ImageMagick noticing ImageMagick failed
but erroneously concluding (with a ?) that ImageMagick might not be
installed.

It might be that fink installs ImageMagick differently (e.g. with X11
support or with a different 'color map') and that this will therefore
work under fink. But it might also be that your .pict file is
incompatible with ImageMagick. I would like to know.

Could you send me variation2Fig1.pict?
