In my opinion it depends heavily on the quality of the display unit you=20=

I now prefer anti-alias but with a previous display unit I used to=20
prefer non anti-alias.

As the quality of display unit grows I think the debate will close down=20=

If you get Tinkertool (versiontracker.com) you can turn font
anti-aliasing off completely.

Hello,

This is a bit of toppic because it's not a MacOS specific TeX question,
still if someone knonws the answer I'd be very grateful.

I'm having a doc in the Book class. In it I have large figure which I
want to extend over the margin. Indeed that running mostly Ok, except
that the margin used is always the left one, which is Ok for odd pages
(that then correspond to external margin) but I want it to be the
opposite for even pages (going on the right margin which is then the
external margin).

I see that it is how they get their large figure in the LaTeX companion
book, but I don't know how they do it (don't have teh source, and
reluctant to look in such big sources anyway), and I'm afraid they do it
in the class defintion, which I would definitely not be able to do.

Thanks for any help.

Serge (PhD student in a rush for printing the final version of his PhD).

Reasons for switching to GS7: security (postscript is a programming =
language,
and can do harm) better (more conformant) quality of the resulting pdf =
(smaller)

Of course Gerben has a ii-package at url:
http://www.ntg.nl/macosx-tex/i-packages/gs7.ii

all packages can be found at: http://www.rna.nl/ii.html

WARNING: remove GS6 before installing GS7

In addition, GS7 fixes a nasty bug in GS6 regarding the rendering of
gradients. Most of our Illustrator images have gradients and they
rendered painfully slow with GS6. They now render and display nicely in
GS7 and Jaguar.

I did not do this when I originally went from 6 to 7 (many months ago)
-- I simply installed 7 over 6. I haven't had any problems. Why does
this need to be done?

Go to Gerben's site and download the latest TeX-thin i-Installer. Once
you've put the installer on your drive, go to the File menu and select
"Open Remote i-Package" and paste
"http://www.ntg.nl/macosx-tex/i-packages/gs7.ii" in the field for the
url. That will bring up the usual installation window.

Compatibility with ps files on other systems might be an issue...there
is no doubt that someone else knows the answer to the second half of
your question better than I. I've read that some flaws with GS 6 were
fixed in GS 7 (although I don't know what they were) but under 10.1.x,
GS 6 worked better with OS X because of the Quartz display issues with
GS 7. I apologize for probably repeating what you already know and
read in the same place I did (but months ago, so I can't give credit).

Best wishes,
Ed

But be aware that a candidate bug has recently showed up in GS 7. It=20
affects TeXShop in TeX + GhostScript mode, and is different from the=20
previous incompatibility between GS 7 and OS X 10.0-1. See the recent=20

Have TeX determine whether or not the page is even or odd and then
include the graphic file:

\newlength{\negevenjump}
\newcommand{\bigfig}{%
\ifthenelse{\isodd{\thepage}}%
% then set \negevenjump to zero;
{\setlength{\negevenjump}{0mm}}%
% otherwise set \negevenjump to a value which makes the graphic
% aligned with the left margin of even numbered pages.
{\setlength{\negevenjump}{-\marginparsep - \marginparwidth}}%
% Now simply include the graphic.
\hspace{\negevenjump}\includegraphics{yourfigname}
}

I haven't tried this, but it gives you the general idea (I have simply
modified some code we have to do this from a book we are writing). Note
it does not use the figure environment, which gives a float, so you
will have to determine the placement of your figure and create the
caption.

You might also search for this in comp.text.tex on Google.

Good luck,

Hello list!

I have finally to download my very first custom package and
successfully create a .cls and .sty file from it using TeXShop becuase
every other way failed.
Now where would I put these files in order to be able to work with
them? Should they be placed in the /usr/local/teTex folder or is it
enough to place them in the TeXShop directory?
I am still very new to this and my LaTeX companion book hasn't arrived
yet...

Thanks for your help!

These messages are generated when I print a pdflatex output file from

TeXShop seems to run OK, but I would rather not have these messages. I =

Somewhere in your /usr/local tree you should have a directory named
something like teTeX.local. If you are running the latest Gerben's
packages then that should be /usr/local/teTex.texmf.local/, where you
should find other directories named tex/latex/. Create a new directory
with the name of the package you are trying to install and place the
relevant files in there.

To make your teTeX installation aware of the new packages you
should run the command "sudo texhash" and all the information about the
available classes and packages in your system should be updated.

	Hope that helps. Regards,...

This test for even/odd pagenumber is far from foolproof: when this test is
made, it is not yet known whether or not the fragment will go on this page
or move to the next one.

It is safer to create a label \label{xxx} and test whether \pageref{xxx}
is even or odd.

Another way to go about is to create a texmf tree with the relevant
structure in the Library in your home directory. In your case:
~/Library/texmf/tex/latex
The advantage is that when you install a new version of teTeX the files
are not overwritten. All files placed in this texmf tree are
immediately available.

Files in the teTeX.texmf.local tree shouldn't be overwritten by an
update either, that's why they bear the label "local", but the
~/Library/texmf/ tree should be just as fine. They way I like to think
of it is that the non standard files desired to be available to all
system users in a multi user workstation should go in teTeX.texmf.local/
and the non standard files that a particular user wants to use without
sharing with other users should go in the private ~/Library/texmf tree.
I think that's the most organized way to do it, but that's just my
taste...

On the other hand, are you sure Martin that they files in the
~/Library/texmf tree don't need "texhash" run on them to become
available?

	Regards,...

No texhash needed. I have the following structure in my local texmf
tree:

~/Library/texmf
	/bibtex
		/bib
			mybibliography.bib
		/bst
			bibtexstyles.bst
	/tex
		/figures
			variouspics.jpg
			variouspics.eps
			variouspics.pdf
		/includes
			preamble.tex
		/prosper
			prosper style files etc.
		/styles
			mystyles.sty
		/texslides
			texslides style files etc.

This works great for me and I get no complaints from LaTeX.

Fredrik
