Regarding presentations in math; I give lectures to 200 students 3 times a
week (a common occurrence alas) and so presentation software is a
must. I use a package written by David Wilson of Utopia. It allows one
to start with latex and turn it into a .pdf with all the usual powerpoint
effects (if one likes these) the most important one being "builds". The
software is not free, but it is cheap. It takes a little thinking to
learn to use, but after you figure it out you can do it in a few minutes.
The graphics are included as .eps files using the usual graphics package.

I don't know if this will help your professor at all, but at least you
should be aware that there is tex friendly presentation software.

I have no connection at all to Utopia Precision Typesetting.

I'll put a vote in for UtiopiaType as well. Its at

http://www.utopiatype.com.au/

My use usage is pretty much the same except it was 4 times a week :-)

The software ubuild is a post-processor so you
do tex to get a ps file and then convert it to pdf
with ubuild.ps loaded in during the ps -> pdf conversion.

Gerben did some great work on teTeX so that it processes the whole thing
in one hit which is very nice. This means it is no different to
texing any file with latex - ghostscript in TeXShop.

One warning: I found the last couple of teTeX installs broke
the ubuild functionality. This is a ubuild problem not
teTeX it doesn't handle the lastest version of dvips (5.90a) which
has changed its code for end of page.
David Wilson is working on this. I am just using a version
of teTeX from the beginning of the year which works
fine anyway.

Just a guess, but maybe replace subscribe with unsubscribe from the
registration process.

To subscribe, send the command "subscribe MacOSX-TeX" (w/o quotes) to
info@email.esm.psu.edu.

This info ought to be in the signature of the emails on this list, or
on the web page. I'll leave this to Gary since I don't know if this is
even correct.

Not the signature, but in the headers.

Whenever I get a message, it contains headers:

If you don't see these, then it is because your mailer is hiding them.

Yes, Apple's Mail does hide them. Use Cmd-Shift-H to display them. Or=20
go to the Presentation menu. There's even a toolbar icon for this, it's=20=

just not part of the default toolbar setup.

In Mozilla 1/Netscape 7 it's View/Message Source (Cmd-U).

Subject: OT: Matlab for OS X Startup File Question...
From: "Dave McCollum"
Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 05:58:08 -0600

Hi,

So far, I have found this list to be about the best place for getting
info about using the new version of Matlab with OS X. With the
generous help of Joseph's post, I am now able to use Matlab 6.5 (R13)
with OS X 10.2.1.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate a source of info about
using a "startup.m" file. On other UNIX systems, one creates a
"matlab" subdirectory in their home directory and puts the startup.m
file there. On launch, Matlab "knows" to check that subdirectory.

So far, it seems that Matlab only runs my startup.m file if it's in
the current directory of the shell from which I launch Matlab (or a
symlink).

Anyone figure out how to get the expected behavior? Adding something
to the /Applications/MATLAB6p5 hierarchy would seem to violate the
multiuser setup of OS X.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Dave

Subject: .tex documents automatically "linked" with Excalibur, not TeXShop
From: "Bruno Voisin"
Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 14:41:25 +0200

Has anybody encountered this problem: now and then all .tex files are
suddenly considered by the Finder as Excalibur files (judging by their
icon, and the information displayed in the Show Info window for them).
This is all the more annoying as I installed Excalibur on my disk just
in case, but I generally do spell checking by hand without using the
computer and I have never opened Excalibur on purpose so far.

It wasn't so much of a nuisance as I just had to open a Show Info
window for any .tex file, go to "Open with...", select TeXShop and then
"Modify all...". But now under OS 10.2.1 it's no longer working: in the
Show Info window, when I select "Open with..." TeXShop just for the
current file it's OK, but as soon as I click on "Modify all..." the
selection goes back to Excalibur.

I have the impression this problem manifests itself only for files with
empty Creator and/or Type fields, for example:

[legimc11:~] applcom% /Developer/Tools/GetFileInfo
/Users/applcom/Library/texmf/tex/cupplain/uplain.tex
file: "/Users/applcom/Library/texmf/tex/cupplain/uplain.tex"

creator: ""

Anybody any idea?

Hi Bruno

Yes I have the same problem and 10.2.1. Modify All seems to only modify
the file I am looking at. I also have this with files which don't have =
empty
Creator and/or Type fields such as

mycomputer% /Developer/Tools/GetFileInfo
/Users/mmurray/Documents/RESEARCH/Notes\ :\ Incomplete/Integrable\
models/integrable_models_1.tex
file: "/Users/mmurray/Documents/RESEARCH/Notes :
Incomplete/Integrable models/integrable_models_1.tex"
type: "TEXT"

modified: 09/13/1991 06:41:37
macmurray2[mmurray]%

Its an old file though from pre-OSX days. Not sure if that is relevant.

Sorry I don't have any ideas for a fix or why OS X decides to chose =
Excalibur
for these files.

Yeah, but if you know this, then you don't email the list asking to be=20=

taken off. Better to put the info on the web site and save some emails=20=

to the whole list. For all intents and purposes, this information is=20

I had a similar problem, but once I restarted the machine all of the

The newest version of GNU Emacs for OS X is Emacs 21.1.30.3=20

True; but when you use a piece of equipment, or software,
then you should have some idea of the things that it is capable of doing,
even if you don't use those features much yourself.

So is the location of the lever to open the door to the petrol cap
on a car. When you rent an unfamiliar hire-car, you may not know
where that lever is, but you'd feel a real dork having to ask
at the rental desk to tell you where it is.

The Mac interface was meant to provide us with easy access to both

Maybe it is already, or maybe there is no web-site.
Besides, where is the address of the web-site to be found...

So I don't see that this makes the slightest bit of difference.

Besides, posting extra info on a website only helps for one mailing-list.
Learning to use your software better helps for *every* mailing list,
so is a far better solution.

Only at their own choice.

Sorry to be blunt.
(I think I'm voicing the same frustrations that Gary showed
with his 1-line response.)
