the "tex" in the example above, you mean?

Question: Will tetex search non-standard directories recursively? (Not
at a machine I can test this on for a few days.) What I have in mind is
to place a symbolic link to another tree of tex inputs someplace in
~/Library/texmf/.

Hello!

I'm new to this mailing-list and I'm looking for an Alpha-like Carbon
text-editor, preferable not Emacs or Vi (nothing against this fine =
software,
but I don't have time to relearn the commands.)

Although the Classic environment runs fine on my G3, Alpha is one of my =
last
Classic apps (next to Palm HotSync manager -- but this is another story) I
use everyday. And running Classic slows down my computer ...

So, has anyone successfully installed AlphaTk on his OS X machine?

And would it be really that hard to port Alpha to OS X, as someone stated =
on
the OzTeX mailing-list?

I just thought about buying BBedit 6.x, but I'm really used to the TeX and
BibTeX menus in Alpha. I'm going to install XFree86 (plus MacGIMP) on my
computer this weekend, maybe there is another interesting solution ...

Thank you very much in advance!

- Lo

yes

[dumbledore:~] gerben% cd ~/Library/texmf/tex

[dumbledore:~/Library/texmf/tex] gerben% ln -s /tmp symlinktotmp

[dumbledore:~/Library/texmf/tex] gerben% ll

lrwxr-xr-x  1 gerben  staff      4 Dec 18 11:25 symlinktotmp -> /tmp

[dumbledore:~/Library/texmf/tex] gerben% touch /tmp/symlinktest.tex

[dumbledore:~/Library/texmf/tex] gerben% kpsewhich symlinktest.tex
/Network/Users/gerben/Library/texmf/tex/symlinktotmp/symlinktest.tex

The answer is yes. Warning: don't like form your Library/texmf tree to a
large directory. TeX will become a lot slower that way because it will
recursively search that directory any time. If you want that kind of a
link anyway, turn hashes on for your personal tree (some unixy work
required).

Have you tried Pepper? I have not used it myself, but I know some people =
who
do and say it is fine for writing TeX files.

No, not at all. We're just a bunch of lazy idiots. Thanks for asking.

If you figure out which Info.plist is causing the problem, I suggest
you submit a bug to http://bugreport.apple.com/

Please don't get me wrong: My posting was not intended as a complaint =
about
the speed of porting. My question was asked in a friendly &
technically-interested manner and Mr. Guyer I'm sorry for not knowing how =
to
develop software and for not knowing all the technical differences between
Carbon, Classic, and so on ...

(It took Wolfram Research -- with a lot of resources, brain power, and =
cash
-- approximately two years to port Mathematica to OS X and no serious user
complained about that.)

Sorry. You caught me in a cranky mood. I was on the verge of not
sending that message and should have gone with that instinct.

Alpha's code is very crufty (we've been working for over three years
to even decipher Pete's code well enough to even release an updated
OS 8/9 version) and Carbonization is not nearly as trivial as Apple
would like people to believe. The result of this ordeal will be
/much/ more solid code in Alpha (both for real Macs and for Carbon),
but it all takes time.

We appreciate that people are interested and will provide you with a
spiffy new Alpha as soon as we are able.
