Sorry if I'm not replying to the thread correctly; I'm mostly just a
listener on this list. Gerben asked if there were any other requests,
and I have one: is it possible to have the CJK package installed with OS
X teTeX?

Thanks for all your work,

Dan

Thanks so much for your efforts! It's so nice to have a
complete, free version of TeX available!

I currently have gs6.01 (from your teTeX distribution) and a
self-compiled gs6.50 (which includes XWindow support). The last
time I updated teTeX, it overwrote my gs binary, and I lost X
support. Reinstalling my version required a minor effort, but
it seems a waste to need two distict versions of gs. Is it
possible for you to include a gs binary compiled with XWindow
support? Do I even need to install your version of gs if I have
another working version?

					Thanks again,

Is it complicated to add in options for obvious teX variants, such as
RevTeX for all those of us writing papers for Phys. Rev. ? I only ask
because I had a slightly annoying time getting RevTeX4 in the right
places so that TeXShop would see it properly. They are also recommending
bibtex in RevTeX 4, so including that would certainly be a good thing.

Jeff and I have been working on a revision of fink's teTeX which matches
Gerben's, and takes advantage of a number of improvements Gerben has
introduced. Our eventual goal is to construct a system in which users can
install teTeX using either fink or Gerben's installer, and be able to use
that copy with both TeXShop and with other fink programs.

The issue with ghostscript is this: Mac OS X's built-in pdf-display =
commands,
used by both TeXShop and Preview, do not correctly display the pdf files
produced by gs 7.02. (You must use Acrobat Reader to view such files.)
However, they do correctly display pdf files produced by gs 6.01. For
this reason, the upcoming new fink version of teTeX will be accompanied by
a downgraded version of ghostscript until such time as Apple fixes this
problem.

All I know is that you cannot record an AS in TS. Don't know if that is

This is in the teTeX.dmg readme. But in short:
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf is teTeX's base package, though a bit has
been updated by me for support for the latest pdfTeX
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.macosx is the tree where I put the stuff I
add/change
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local is the tree where you can put stuff
that will be available for all users on your machine
~/Library/texmf is the tree where each user can have his or her own stuff

These are searched in the reverse order I have put them here.

Note: these trees are not searched entirely for all programs. For
packages, sty etc, it is best to put them under a subdirectory called
'tex', so in you case I would use
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/ as the directory to put stuff in.

Note: if you put stuff in the first three, you have to run the texhash
command after you have added the files.

Note: currently, ~/Library/texmf also gets texhashed, this will change
in the future and then you can add stuff to you own ~/Library/texmf tree
and have it available without running texhash.

Note: An up-to-date hyperref is already part of my teTeX distribution.

For each type, you can find out where teTeX looks for files with the
'kpsewhich' command. For .eps files, I get:

[dumbledore:~] gerben% kpsewhich -show-path=3D.eps
..:/Users/gerben/Library/texmf/tex/generic//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf=
..
local/tex/generic//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.os/tex/generic//:!!/usr/=

local/teTeX/share/texmf/tex/generic//:/Users/gerben/Library/texmf/tex///:!!=
/usr/
local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex///:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.os/tex/=

//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/tex///

As you can see, ~/Library/texmf/tex/generic is a good place for your
personal .eps files

[dumbledore:~] gerben% kpsewhich -show-path=3D.bib
..:/Users/gerben/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.=

local/bibtex/bib//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.os/bibtex/bib//:!!/usr/lo=
cal/
teTeX/share/texmf/bibtex/bib//:/Users/gerben/Library/texmf/bibtex///:!!/usr=
/
local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/bibtex///:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.os/
bibtex///:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/bibtex///

And ~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib is a good place for personal .bib files.

I *strongly* advise (and will not support due to the complexities)
against changing teTeX paths. You can do that, but you will be on your
own. teTeX has a very complex and rich path mechanism which works pretty
good 'as is'.

I think incomplete Apple PDF support is to blame for this one. I noticed
that links (url.sty) do work in Acrobat, but not in Apple Cocoa apps.

Fink will probably adopt my distribution.

With gs 7 you get PDF that does not display well in certain cases on Mac
OS X 10.1 (and 10.0.4 for that matter). Hence the fact that I use gs 6.
Latest is not by definition best.

I am talking with the fink people for a solution. I disagree with
certain aspects of the fink setup, but we are working on a solution in a
positive way.

Chinese-Japanese-Korean

I'll let you envisage for yourself what this can mean,
in terms of font-support !

Do a search on CJK at CTAN: http://www.ctan.org/search/

For placing stuff so that teTeX can find it, see one of my previous

I won't support X (or MS for that matter) windows. I am keeping my
systems X-free and therefore will not be able to compile in X-support.

First of all, thanks a lot for the teTeX work! Great to have a binary
distribution at hand.

As for requests for the next version, I'd love to see the installation of
gs to be optional, as I (like many others) have my own gs (7.01) with X11
support.

(By the way, does a standard teTeX source tree compile on OS X? Is it much
of a hassle to get it to work? This might be interesting for many of us
unixish people who prefer tetex,emacs,xdvi)

Cheers,

As mentioned before: it is optional already and yes you can use your own
gs 7, but note that it produces pdf that is sometimes incompatible with
Apple's PDF implementation (when you have a combination of pk and pfb
fonts).

ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/tex-gs/ contains all my stuff
including sources I use and complete instructions on how to build your
own.

The main problem is that the standard teTeX tree is old, and that the
pdfTeX it contains might be considered antique. This leads to having a
setup with two different web2c implementations.

I would advise at this moment against compiling your own using those
patches. As soon as 10.1 developer arrives here I'll be tuning that
stuff there and probably simplifying it (less diffs, more auto*).
