E Mch 12: Tutoring

The basic Engineering Mechanics and Engineering Science courses are designed to teach particular principles and ideas through problem solving. Thus, each class day, students are assigned problems chosen to elucidate and reinforce the principles under study. It is safe to say that if the student can solve the assigned problems in a reasonable amount of time, he or she will do well in that course and conversely, if one can't do homework type problems, then one is unlikely to succeed. Unfortunately, some students become easily discouraged in attempting problems and quickly fall hopelessly behind. Although they intended to see their instructor, perhaps the instructor's office hours and their free time didn't match, the instructor may have been on the phone, out of town, etc., and they never got to see the instructor until the day before the final exam.

In an effort to help our students achieve their educational goals, the ESM Department is conducting a "tutoring-help" program, beginning immediately.

If you need help with a problem(s), please do the following:
(a) go to the appropriate room and sign in
(b) find a blackboard and put all your work (relating to the problem) on the board or have work on a neatly presented sheet of paper uncluttered by other problems
(c) ask the instructor for assistance and/or
(d) join other students to form a cooperative team to collectively consider the homework problems

It is our experience that students need only a little help to grasp the concept which will enable them to solve the problem. If they avail themselves of aid at an early stage, they are able to utilize their problem solving abilities throughout the course and will do well in their engineering courses. In order to help you, we believe that step (b), above, is necessary since only you can pinpoint your difficulties. Thus, ask the tutor for help after part (b) has been done.
